Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon shares how Scorpion's iconic 'GET OVER HERE' line was created
Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon has started sharing more behind-the-scenes looks and history about the franchise in celebration of its 30 year anniversary. The legendary developer started out with footage of Scorpion's classic spear move being thought up and recorded, showing the process of the developers coming up with the idea and the actor performing what was being instructed.
Piggybacking off of this, Boon has gone into more detail about the line that is equally as iconic as the move itself: "GET OVER HERE!" In a series of tweets from Ed, we learn more about his voice acting contributions to the Mortal Kombat series, a world record set by the quick line of dialogue, and even see Boon perform the line on the Conan O'Brien show.
"The first Mortal Kombat had a very small budget," Boon begins his tweet thread. "This meant no money to hire professional voice talent for our fighters. Who didn't say much anyway ;)"
He goes on to note that at the time when Mortal Kombat 1 was being developed, Boon had previously done voice work for roughly 10 - 15 pinball machines. Because of his experience there, several of the voices for the first game used his voice as a default, which included Scorpion's "COME HERE!" and "GET OVER HERE!" lines.
What you might not have known is that Boon would actually go on to voice Liu Kang, Kano, Johnny Cage and the announcer (who happens to be Shang Tsung) in the original game. He also provided his talents for Jax's "GOTCHA!" line in Mortal Kombat 2.
The powerful and memorable "GET OVER HERE!" would ultimately be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2010 as the "longest serving video game voice actor." Boon's voice was used for the line for decades of Mortal Kombat games that followed, landing it a spot in the book.
