This thread is for the general discussion of Forgotten Realms DM's Guide. Click on Overview for more information.

"Part of our re-imagining of these core books was also wanting to return to D&D's most popular setting--the Forgotten Realms."

The Forgotten Realms Guide is the first player's guide other than the setting in 5th edition. This will be two books, one for Dungeon Masters, one for players.

The Dungeon Master's book digs into different parts of the Realms--Baldur's Gate for urban fantasy, Iceland Dale for survival horror, isolated towns, a giant elvish mega dungeon, fairy stories and conflict which can be resolved without violence in the Moonshae Isles, and the land of Kalimshan. Each delivers a different play style.

The Forgotten Realms Adventure Guide will be a trove of information and resources for Dungeon Masters to create their own epic fantasy adventures. It will also contain five in-depth setting guides for iconic locations in the Forgotten Realms that support a variety of adventure genres:

  • Baldur’s Gate
  • Calimshan
  • The Dalelands
  • Moonshae Isles
  • Icewind Dale

I'm curious to see how they do this thing of talking about how to run different kinds of campaigns......It is an interesting way to use the Realms.
They have been making Setting expansions about genre for a while, since Ravnica.
And it’s nice to see them visiting some new-to-5e areas like the Moonshaes and Calimshan.

Too bad they couldn’t also include a “how to do a classic medieval kingdom” section using Cormyr.
No reason to think they won't: in the context of the video, it was a series of "for examples" not an exhajstice list of where will be detailed.

Me too. On the one hand I'm kind of like, wait, no, that's...weird. But OTOH it's actually great for wrapping your head around the themes of what a place offers. How many cities across fantasy are just versions of Lankhmar, or Fantasy New York, or Fantasy London? Same goes for the lands, in many respects, but they did start with fairly obvious ones. I'd like to see them do what they did in Van Richten and at least have a little blurb on other lands to give some sense of the vibe there.

I'm soooooooo glad to see the Dalelands in there - most of my 2e and 3e campaigns were set in the Dalelands and the lack of any support in 5e really, really irked me. Hopefully we'll see some coverage of Cormyr and the Moonsea, even if it's just incidental.

(I'm going to guess we'll see general coverage of the regions of the setting in the players guide, while this will be more focused on certain regions, with sample adventures. And hopefully a decent setting bestiary!)
