In the states, people tend to scoff at the idea of mixing anything with wine (though we at Delish clearly do not, check out our Red Wine Mules and Champagne Margaritas). However in the Basque region of Spain, they aren't only drinking sangria, in fact mixing wine with soft drinks is somewhat of an obsession all over Spain. One of the most popular iterations is called Kalimotxo.
All it takes to make a Kalimotxo is two ingredients: Coke and red wine. We know it might seem crazy but this combo truly is something special. Though it is a simple drink to make we do have a couple tips to make the best of it. Firstly the red wine you buy should first and foremost be cheap, we're mixing it with Coke so need to spend more than $10 or so dollars. No need to buy Spanish but if you want to fully commit to the Basque classic you might get a Temparnillo or a Rioja.
Lastly, if you can find it, spring for Mexican coke or coke that is made with sugar cane as opposed to corn syrup. It often comes in a glass bottle, and this will mimic the Coke found outside of the states. But once you've got your two ingredients, we promise you'll follow this endlessly drinkable, fruity and sweet bev!
If you do make it let us know how it came out in the comments below!
