House for an Art Lover, Art Park and Bellahouston Park, Glasgow

Bellahouston Park, 5km southwest of the centre of Glasgow , houses multiple attractions, including the House for an Art Lover LinkExternal link the result of a 1901 competition set by a German design magazine. The Art Nouveau entry by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald, although disqualified because it was a late entry, was awarded a prize. A decision was subsequently taken to execute the plans, which turned out to be a complex operation, as the plans were a ‘concept’ and needed quite a bit of interpretation! Building began in 1989 and it opened to the public in 1996. The House for an Art Lover is owned by a charitable company with the primary purpose of stimulating public interest in Art, Design & Architecture. There is a café and shop, and the house can be used as a venue for conferences and other types of event.

There are other varied attractions in the approx. 60ha of the park Bellahouston Park LinkExternal link The house is surrounded by Art Park, Glasgow, which includes a Culture and Heritage Centre, with workshops and exhibition area [in the former stables and dovecot of Ibroxhill House], and open parkland, woodland, sculpture park, a Victorian walled garden, sports facilities, with pitches for various sports, a cycle track, gymnastics club, ski and snowboard centre, bowling greens, playground areas.
