The Swan and Talbot, Wetherby

Originally founded in 1611 (according to the hotel's web site) or 1678 (according to the blue plaque outside) as the Dog and Swan, the name comes from the arms of the Swann family of nearby Askham Manor. A Talbot is a breed of hunting dog.

The current building is mostly 18th century, dating from the rebuild after the great town fire of 1723, and is grade II listed (see LinkExternal link )

The location next to the ancient grounds of the Horse fair, and near the 700 year old bridge, made it one of the principal coaching inns on the Great North Road, which still ran past the building in the early years of my working life. Most of the outbuildings are gone, and the northern half of the original building is now used as flats, but the hotel still persists when so much has changed around it.
