James Turrell is a US-American artist with a background in aviation, mathematics and perceptual psychology. As an artist he has taken to heart the advice of his Quaker grandmother to 'Look within yourself and welcome the light'.
The Skyspace at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park was commissioned in 2007 by the Art Fund and constructed inside an 18th century deer shelter in the country park at West Bretton. Inside it, Turrell has constructed a space for contemplation, a square chamber with seating and an aperture in the roof that offers a window onto the ever-changing sky, a view heightened in its intensity by its dark, plain surroundings.
