Mahogany fourposter bed, Croome Court
This mahogany fourposter bed was commissioned by the 6th Earl of Coventry in 1764: it was made for the Earl’s marriage to his second wife Barbara St John. The bed was designed by Robert Adam and was made by John Bradham and William France of London. Originally there was an elaborate dome as a canopy above the top of the bed, this was destroyed in a fire, and the bed has been reduced in width at some point. The Earl spent the equivalent of £25,000 on the bed, luxurious bedding and other furniture in the room.
