NY7853 : Ninebanks Tower

taken 10 years ago, near to Ninebanks, Northumberland, England

Ninebanks Tower
Ninebanks Tower
This ornamental tower has a complex history. It was once part of a grand 16th century manor house; but recent researches demonstrate that it also incorporates the remains of earlier structures.

The tower looks impressive, but its heights, windows and the thinness of most of its walls (only 0.6 m) indicate that it could never have been defensive in character and was not a pele tower as had been previously supposed.

The ruins were surveyed and consolidated by the North Pennines AONB Partnership in 2008-2010.
