NY8713 : Embedded boulders beside bridleway

taken 10 years ago, 3 km from South Stainmore, Cumbria, England

Embedded boulders beside bridleway
Embedded boulders beside bridleway
The bridleway follows the smoother grass to the left of the boulders. This route has no doubt been well used for centuries as it's close to the Stainmore Gap, a crossing point through the North Pennines from east to west- the A66 uses it now and lies a short way from this location. According to OS mapping Maiden Castle, a Roman fortlet, lies somewhere ahead in the image.
