Cherry Eye Incline
Cherry Eye Incline
This cutting through the bank above the Caldon Canal was dug for the inclined plane that brought the tramway from Cherry Eye Ironstone Mine down to a wooden wharf on the canal. The mine closed in 1923 and the wharf is long gone but the line of the incline, which, above this section, runs mostly on a low embankment, is traceable through the recently-thinned woodland on what is now open-access land. It is, however, very steep.
