Former buildings on the site were demolished in 1994 and since the London Underground authority was proposing to build a new interchange tube station (Westminster) in association with the building of the Jubilee Line Extension the two were designed and built as a single unit. This building, i.e. Portcullis House, began to rise above the ground in 1998 and opened in 2001. The building's profile with its rows of tall chimneys is intended to recall the Victorian Gothic design of the Palace of Westminster and to fit in with the chimneys of the Norman Shaw Building next door. These chimneys however, are not used to expel fumes but are part of an unpowered air conditioning system.
