There are a number of ruined crofts in Graveland, which were probably abandoned during the clearances of 1867 under factor John Walker.

This is the most northerly of a line of ruined crofts along the western side of Whale Firth.

Haa of Graveland

This tremendous sheep enclosure probably dates back to the mid 1860s and the forcible conversion of the land use from arable tenant farming to sheep pasture. The sides are approximately 75 m x 75 m, and the wall 1.5 m high.

View over Whale Firth
Taken from the deserted croft at Daalaskeo over to the bleak eastern side of Whale Firth. The western side of the firth is not so steep and formerly supported a crofting community. It still has a well fenced field system for sheep grazing.... (more)
