Woolrich continues to destroy all other suspense writers of the time era with this nerve shattering tale about a killer jaguar on the loose in a South American city-- or is it something else? A wildly paced story with entire chapters dedicated to the slow destruction of a victim (the chapter with the girl trapped in a locked cemetery with the beast for example, builds and builds so brilliantly, and psycologically, you can hardly stand it.) There's a reason this was made into a fantastic film in the 40's by Jacques Tourneur, because the original source material is fantastic too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
