damn, white girlie making black people the oppressors??? in the year of our lord 2022??? read the fucking room? honestly that’s just appalling. unfortunate bc the “snapshots” were cute (sapphic, zuko-esque), but reverse racism w white people as the oppressed? what a joke.

see, i was going to put some effort into this until i checked your profile and saw that its 4-day existence is dedicated to defending this one book MANY black people have denounced so, kindly, fuck off.

Aly Okay, well, my account is not 4 days old and I think people should actually read books before commenting on them, much more reviewing and rating them.

For starters, I am well within my rights to rate and review a book regardless of whether I read it or not. My review was based on what many black readers were saying/thinking/feeling, and it is not my place to ignore their words. Secondly, you may have felt nothing was wrong with what takes place in this novel, but you are also not the only bipoc. If others felt something was wrong, and big name authors removed their own good reviews (whether this be pressure or because they realized something felt off), then why would I try to justify whatever happens here?

I've chosen to not read this book, and Rebecca's "apology" is not mine to accept either. You stating that people should actually read books before commenting sort of makes reviews a moot point. Reviews are what told me that I wouldn't be comfortable or happy with what takes place in the novel, and I made a point of expressing myself so others would know too.

Here's the thing - neither black people (nor any other race) are a monolith. While you and other black readers may have found nothing wrong with it (absolutely up to you!), what I am stating is that your opinion is NOT the only opinion out there. It was a black woman who read this book who brought issues to light. It was also other black women that expanded on why they were disgruntled with certain aspects. I chose to listen to them and therefore, have chosen to not read this book, just knowing others were unhappy with it. Unfortunately, you won't convince me either, not when there are others that would disagree with you.

There are so many other books coming out in 2022 - why would I bother wasting my time on this one, and why do you bother defending it to someone who's adamantly against reading it?

Kenzie McCoy It literally didn't though, they aren't even the villains
