The last two stories are I am not a short story girl, I have tried but it is not usually my thing. For Ronald Malfi I will definitely jump in though. The last two stories are the winners here, and one features bugs which I am not down for ever. After the Fade is the 2nd last story and starts pretentious as all get out, asking "what happens to the music after the song is over" [image] But then giant bugs attack and it gets good, disgusting but good. The ending to After the Fade is fantastic, perfect short story ending in my opinion. The last story had a ton of moving parts but I was very much zoned in....more

That is terrifying in itself. This is how I started Spooky season and what a start! The Gatherings is short story about the apocalypse, it happens quickly via Gatherings held worldwide by celebrities and popular politicians. The Gatherings are similar to a live aid situation but it goes in a different way when people start attacking each and somehow gel together into a nightmare that is described as a "Meat Centipede" [image] The imagery in this is terrifying but also the environment of the apocalypse is full of despair, our main character talks about how hopeless she feels without birds in the sky, my god it hit me hard. Once again Ray has done a short story that has much depth and terror in such a small package. Horror fans this horror story is so well done and is on kindle unlimited!!...more
I am not a die hard Stephen King fan, I read some of his books in high school but I have not read anything since then ...so it's been a while. This coI am not a die hard Stephen King fan, I read some of his books in high school but I have not read anything since then ...so it's been a while. This cover drew me in it, looks fun and vintage, the book it self is also short something that I would never relate to King's writing. Later is the story of a young boy named Jamie being raised by his single mother in New York. Jamie is a sweet kid who tries to behave and loves his mom, he can also see dead people. [image] There are interesting rules that King has sprinkled in with this affliction, my favourite and most important is that when asked a question ghosts cannot lie, and another interesting facet is that the ghosts don't look like ghosts so right away it is not obvious that they are dead. Which can be a shocker or off putting. [image] They are not see through, most are not angry and most don't hang around that long. I really liked this! It was a great story that never drags, you are engaged the whole time. The mother's job as a literary agent endears her to you almost immediately, she makes grammar jokes and I think she's swell. But to be clear this is not your usual Stephen King read, it is very different but so well done!...more

This was creepy, stressful and very confusing. Go into this with the outlook that this read will mimic a fever dream and I think that will help and most fever dreams are creepy, stressful and very confusing, so the author has captured that brilliantly. Samanta Schweblin gives you all the pieces but she will not be putting the puzzle together that job is left to the reader. [image] I went on reddit to find out what actually happened, sigh....more
