Don't Stay Up Late

Rate this book
The second new book in the re-launch of R.L. Stine's Fear Street series, which sold 80 million copies around the world, making it one of the bestselling young adult series of all time.

R.L. Stine's hugely successful young adult horror series Fear Street is back after almost 2 decades. Fear Street is a worldwide phenomenon and helped to kick off the young adult craze which is still going strong today. In the second new book in this series, Don't Stay Up Late, Stine explores the unbridled terror of a damaged young lady sent on a doomed babysitting job.

Ever since a car accident killed her father and put Lisa and her mother into the hospital, Lisa can't think straight. She's plagued by nightmares and hallucinations that force her to relive the accident over and over again in vivid detail. When Lisa finds out that a neighbor is looking for a babysitter for her young son, she takes the job immediately, eager to keep busy and shake these disturbing images from her head.
But what promised to be an easy gig turns terrifying when Lisa begins to question exactly who — or what — she is babysitting.

R.L. Stine makes his triumphant return to Shadyside in the new Fear Street book Don't Stay Up Late.

I think I'm not alone when I say R.L. Stine was a huge part of my childhood. Back when I was still in grade school, I found it hard to be committed to reading... the books I read just didn't stick with me and it was difficult to keep being engaged after 10 pages, but R.L. Stine's Goosebumps books changed that. I loved his books. I loved how it helped nourish the reader in me and how it nurtured my love for reading. I was so fascinated with the notion that mere words could scare the daylights out of me.

That's why I wanted to read Don't Stay Up Late, his newest work. I wanted to feel that nostalgia again, and see what the author has to offer many, many years since the last time I read him. I wanted to see how he has grown as an author through the years.

Unfortunately, upon finishing this book, I was left feeling... quite empty. I feel like I probably would have appreciated this better if I were still a wee one, because his recent work still has the same clunky writing of years past, and that really bummed me out. As an adult and as someone whose tastes and preferences have matured over the years, this kind of writing just doesn't work with me anymore Now, don't get me wrong, like I said objectively, this may work on younger people especially those who are dyslexic, but subjectively, it was disappointing.

For one, it was more telling than showing, a rinse repeat of "subject-verb" a la "I asked, I said, I went, he ran" page after page after page, with scores of dialogue in between, leaving absolutely no room for us to know the MC and her friends and family at all, and also making the story absolutely fast-paced. Like for example, the MC loses an important person to her (due to her immaturity, no less), and we don't even feel her remorse or sadness at all even if she insists that she's feeling traumatized by it. The lack of depth and intimacy here made it a jarring and disconnecting experience. And did I mention the clunky, stilted, jarring writing style? Yeah... :/ The premise definitely has potential to be scary, but the writing is quite off the mark and only made it silly. Doesn't help either that the MC was exhausting to read with her immaturity... to which she does not grow from. At all.

I know it's quite unfair for me to expect so much, but I don't know, I loved the author when I was a kid, and I guess I had thought that through the years, his style would evolve somehow, but it hasn't. This isn't a bad thing by any means, mind you... it only means to say that this was directed to a different audience, and it's definitely not the YA crowd. I'd classify this as lower MG.

All in all, I was not the target audience, and I should have expected this. But hey, you can't blame me for having hoped otherwise, right?

I received a copy of this book for an honest review from NetGalley.

I used to read the Fear Street novels years ago and thought they were great!

Lisa takes a job babysitting Harry on Fear Street. Some of her friends tell her about Fear Street being haunted etc. But, after a horrible accident with her father she decided along with her counselor she needs to get out and do something.

She falls in love with Harry because he is just so precious. His mother, Brenda, needs her to watch him 3 nights a week while she works. During the day he gets home schooled right down the road at his aunt Alice's house.

Lisa keeps having nightmares and keeps seeing this half human, half monster in her dreams and for real in Harry's house. Or is it true? Her family, friends and therapist say these are just hallucinations due to trauma from the accident. Sometimes she believes them and other times she don't. A couple of people have been killed by a beast already so why not her beast?

The story is a cute little horror story, well, maybe not so cute if you are in it!

Lisa finds out the truth about the weird creature, the weird noises that come from the aunt Alice's basement, family ties, her therapist and wraps it all up on FaceTime so the cops and her mom will finally believe her! I thought that was awesome!

But then.... there is always an epilogue :)

The narrator is so annoying -- I think I've complained about her for another book. She tries to sex up the narration (e.g. one part where she's like "his... hairy... THICK... eyebrows raised up at me" -- like it's just unnecessary to emphasize and speak that way when nothing in the text suggests sexuality or sexual tension, lol) and so to combat that I listened to the book mostly on 2x speed. Anyway, to the story itself -- It was good, and actually my theory as to what was really going on was wrong! So that delighted me because I didn't want the story to be too predictable. I did end up predicting other things, but it's ok. It's Fear Street, so I'll let any predictable plot points pass, lol.

Dnf. My first book of R.L. Stine and sorry this one more like a scary book for child. Seriously like for little child! It's not scare me at all! If I'm a little kid, it might scare me more.

It took me longer to read this than I had expected but this is a dynamite story! It starts out normal enough with a deadly car accident and poor Lisa suffering from trauma (including horrible nightmares and feelings of guilt) but then the story takes a twist to the horror realm or should I say Fear Street?

One thing I really liked about this one is how it kept me guessing! There are so many suspects and my mind was busy trying to analyze things to figure out exactly what was going on. Because poor Lisa is seeing monsters! But are the monsters real or are they just a figment of her imagination? And the real twist is that this IS Fear Street so either could be true! Or maybe even both? But the bodies are piling up fast and they are other teens that Lisa knew. And it may be gruesome but it seems as if something had eaten them!

I really enjoyed this scary trip to Fear Street. Stine can definitely still write and bring on the chills, the uncertainty and keep you guessing. Plus the story is fast paced too.

I must admit that there is one bit in here I did find a bit illogical. And it was Harry's mother. Harry is the young boy that Lisa is babysitting. And for unknown reasons his mother insists that Harry needs to be asleep by 8 pm. But just because Lisa puts him to bed at 8 pm that is no guarantee he will actually be asleep! So yeah, his mother is very strange in my opinion! But it's perfect for this story!

I also had serious doubts about Lisa's friends in here too.. Plus other characters. Because this story makes you suspect virtually everyone! And that sure raises the suspense level.

By the way, my guesses in here were right too! And that makes me feel very satisfied.

And now I can return this to the library and I relaxed reading by the lake too...out in the sun. It's good to be out in the bright sun when visiting Fear Street.

When I was around the age of eight, I lived on R.L. Stine novels. Together with Darren Shan and a handful of Dutch horror writers, he was my favourite author. My library had two shelves full with his books - probably about twenty Goosebumps novels and another thirty Fear Street ones. I loved the thrills, I loved the scary parts, and I loved all of the monsters.

In Don't Stay Up Late Stine returns to Fear Street, giving us a new story of terror. Between 1997 and 2014 Stine hasn't written any new Fear Street books, and Party Games and Don't Stay Up Late are part of a relaunch of a new batch of books set in this classic scary town.

This book was so incredibly nostalgic to me. Even though the story is new, it has all of the Stine staples that I remember from my childhood. The jump scares, the dark conspiracies, the freaky hallucinations... Even though Don't Stay Up Late is written for a modern audience, it still reads like a book from the 90s. The language is archaic, even though it now has a sprinkling of modern devices to incorporate. The writing felt rather clunky to me as an adult, and I can't decide whether it has always been that way or whether it's just a problem that is unique to Don't Stay Up Late.

To be honest, Don't Stay Up Late isn't very scary any more when you're no longer a kid. On the other hand, I know that I would have devoured this book when I was ten. The language is very easy, and it's a great book for teens that are reluctant readers (or for ferocious middle grade horror lovers like I used to be). It doesn't hold much substance for an older audience, though it's still quite fun for old time's sake.

***This review has also been posted on The Social Potato

This was my first foray into R.L. Stine’s works and unfortunately, it wasn’t a very successful one. I feel like ‘it’s so bad it’s good’ would be applicable here but at the same time, my biggest problem with the book was not the story itself but the writing style.

The writing style just didn’t work for me. It wasn’t even that it was childish, it was just that it never seemed to flow. I never felt like I was reading a story, it was more like something that was just a summary of what actually happened. I never felt like I was ‘in’ the moment. I always felt like I was an observer, merely seeing what happened instead of feeling it or experiencing it.

The story line was also a little awkward but given that I continue to read it instead of DNFing it, I didn’t mind it as much. It was also addictive because even though I didn't really like the writing style, my eyes were still glued the pages. It kind of reminded me of a cheesy old horror movie (but since I haven’t really watched any, don’t take my word for that). It was entertaining and actually kind of amusing (not sure if it was meant to be amusing).

I will not say that I hated the book, because I didn’t, it just seemed incomplete to me and I wish there was more substance to it, and the writing so I didn’t feel like I was just reading a summary of what was happening.

If you are a fan of the author, I would definitely say to give the book a shot but if you, like me, are a newbie, I'd say it's probably better if you start somewhere else.

I'd forgotten how these books are ALL GASLIGHTING, ALL THE TIME.

Same name repetitions here: Brendan Fear, and Brenda Hart. Surname Martin, surname Martino, and town Martinsville. Would've thought an editor would've suggested name changes.

Soooo....guess I'm eating my hat. Unlike Party Games which promised horror and gave readers red herrings, this Fear Street novel was like "Death! All the death! Death for you, death for your family...everybody gets death!"

---

(I like how we've now adjusted the series for this to "Fear Street Relaunch", this is actually a good idea since those who read the old Fear Streets may kind of be like "wait...CONTINUITY". Or that's just me. Moving on)

---

Pop Quiz Time Fear Street Fiends:

Your therapist offers you a job working with a "perfect angel" of a child. Its extraordinarily, some might even say improbably, good money for minimal effort. The caveat being the last baby sitter just up and disappeared. Having lived near Fear Street long enough to hear the rumors would you:

A) assume the baby sitter was at fault, because awww the kid is so cute!
B) have a bit of self-preservation instinct and ask questions like "I'm in therapy for severe nightmares brought on by my father's traumatic death, why give me the care of a child?"
C) Ignore your suspicions because you think your boyfriend may be cheating on you with your best friend so that's more important.
D) those rumors about Fear Street are unfounded and unjustified

You've miraculously survived babysitting the angel of a kid, however you are seeing some rather strange sights and your pesky PTSD from your father's traumatic death seems to be getting worse. Do you:

A) allow everyone to reassure you that the strange sights you saw are meaningless because awww the cute kid loves you!
B) Be rather concerned that no one else is concerned that you are having these traumatic moments and seek new outside help.
C) Ignore your suspicions because you think your boyfriend may be cheating on you with your best friend so that's more important.
D) It can't possibly be related to the rumors about Fear Street, so why does it matter?

You made your concerns about your PTSD known and things seem to have calmed down. Until that girl who used to date your boyfriend winds up dead after warning you about said boyfriend. Do you:

A) Assume she's just batshit cray-cray with jealousy and her death has nothing to do with your boyfriend because awwww the cute kid loves him!
B) Be VERY concerned because wtf she died not even a block away after warning you about your increasingly suspicious boyfriend.
C) Ignore your suspicions because you think your boyfriend may be cheating on you with your best friend so that's more important.
D) Pfft just because she happened to die in a gruesome manner on Fear Street doesn't mean it has anything to do with those unfounded and unbelievable rumors about Fear Street.

Now you've gone and done it. You've found out your boyfriend is related to the angelic child (and your best friend?), you've learned that the former babysitter is now in a looney bin, and your best friend has told the police that you're seeing things. Do you:

A) Assume you're going crazy and it has nothing to do with the kid because awww cute kid!
B) Take a step back and realize "Wait. No. This really feels like a conspiracy guys!" and go to a higher authority with hard proof of said conspiracy.
C) Ignore your suspicions because you think your boyfriend may be cheating on you with your best friend (HIS COUSIN?!) so that's more important.
D) Just because your very suspicious boyfriend's best friend who made a move on you wound up dying in a horrible horrible manner just steps away from the kid's house on Fear Street doesn't mean that those rumors are true!

Well somehow, by some plot deus ex machina, you survived. The real murderers are behind bars, the angelic kid is gone from your life, you've moved away and you're finally feeling mentally healthy again. Do you:

A) Stop to reflect on the fact everyone you trusted was completely okay with making you out to be certifiably insane to protect that awww cute kid!
B) Realize you should have had your suspicions much quicker so from now on you'll listen to your better instincts.
C) miss the boyfriend who was ready to let you believe he was cheating on you with your best friend (his cousin?!) and let you be carted away as crazy (at least until that plot deus ex machina occurred).
D) Seriously none of this has anything to do with the rumors about Fear Street. Its all a bunch of coincidences.

Dear Fear Street Fiends let me assure you if you chose any answer but "B" in any of the questions you obviously should move to Fear Street because you're the type of rube they're looking for.

Real Estate is cheap! Get in while you still can!

I was so over the top excited to check out this relaunch of the Fear Street series. I can remember reading these books when I was younger. Actually I read all of Mr. Stine's series and watched the television series as well. The best part about these books were the "campy" feel of the stories. Some were scary.

What I felt like I was missing with this book was the "campy" feel. Also there was nothing really scary about this book. While the monster in this story was not something I would want to meet late at night by myself. There was no real connection to what the monster was to the story as a whole at first, so thus the monster was not scary. Also, I had no close connection with Lisa or any of the other characters in this book. The ending was alright. However because I grew up reading books by Mr. Stine. I will probably check out another book in this series to see if the books do get better to what I remember.

Every time I read a R. L. Stine book it always feels a bit nostalgic as I grew up reading his books. I enjoyed this quick, easy read. The story was a bit easy to figure out, still enjoyed it though.

Κι αφού έπιασα τη σειρά «Οδός Τρόμου» συνεχίζω με το δεύτερο βιβλίο, με τίτλο «Μην ξενυχτήσεις». Αυτή τη φορά, ο συγγραφέας στο τσουκάλι του έχει βάλει τέρατα, εφήβους και παιδιά, καθώς και μια διάσειση που προκαλεί πονοκεφάλους, εφιάλτες και παραισθήσεις. Ακούγεται καλό ε!;

Επιστρέφοντας πίσω στη μικρή πόλη Σέιντισαϊντ, γνωρίζουμε τη Λίζα Μπρουκς, η οποία είναι από τους πρόσφατους κατοίκους της πόλης. Μένει με τους γονείς της και το σκύλο της και όλα πηγαίνουν καλά, μέχρι τη στιγμή που τους συμβαίνει ένα τρομερό αυτοκινητιστικό δυστύχημα. Αυτή θα είναι η αιτία που η Λίζα χάνει τον πατέρα της ενώ η ίδια και η μητέρα της τη γλυτώνουν με κάποια ταύματα. Από την τρομάρα του προφανώς, έχουν χάσει και τον πιστό σκύλο της οικογένειας, αλλά ποιος να κατηγορήσει το ζωντανό, μετά από ό,τι συνέβη;

Μήπως οφείλονται στο τρομακτικό δυστύχημα που την καθήλωσε για βδομάδες στο νοσοκομείο;

Άραγε οι εφιάλτες της γίνονται πραγματικότητα;

Eh not as good as the original Fear Street books, but still kept me wanting more till the end. Even though the end was predictable and kinda dumb.

Still going to read the other two books in the relaunch series. Why? Because it's fucking R.L. Stine. I have faith that his new books can't be all bad....

Believe it or not, R.L. Stine was someone I never read while growing up, although I enjoyed the TV series very much. When I saw that the books were being released once again, I couldn't resist taking a look and seeing what they were all about.

While this was a somewhat creepy story (I would imagine) for someone younger, it just wasn't for someone my age. The writing was a bit stilted for me and very immature even for a YA read.

I can definitely see a preteen audience absolutely loving these though, just not for the older generation that grew up reading or watching the show now as adults.

Considering this is for a younger audience I really enjoyed this book! I had a few guesses as to what was going on and one of them was correct, but it wasn’t my top choice!

3.5 stars. I don't know why I thought this book was going to be predictable. I've read enough R L. Stine to know he can always manage an unexpected twist. I enjoyed this one more than the first book in the relaunch, but didn't rate it higher because I could see one of the twists coming from a mile away. The last few chapters totally blew me away though. I love these books!

I'm an RL Stine fan and grew up reading Goosebumps (which my sister collected) and Fear Street (which was my collection).

Don't Stay Up Late still has all the makings of a classic RL Stine novel-- the twists and turns of the story, as well as the cliffhanger at the end of each chapter.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the story is a bit more Goosebumps than Fear Street. Fear Street is supposed to be darker and scarier with all the murders and disturbing events in its plot lines but Don't Stay Up Late doesn't seem to meet that standard.

I do hope RL Stine will continue writing books for his new Fear Street series. As an avid fan, I'm really looking forward to that.

This relaunch series follows the same page-turning formula of the original Fear Street books of the 90s. I do think the longer length feels a bit forced and makes the big reveal less appealing, but still great entertainment as always from Stine

Η δράση της ιστορίας μας επικεντρώνεται στο Σέιντισαϊντ, όπου η νεαρή Λίζα Μπρουκς βασανίζεται από φρικτούς εφιάλτες και τρομακτικές παραισθήσεις, που τις έχουν στερήσει τον ύπνο και την ηρεμία της. Όλα δείχνουν πως υποφέρει από μετατραυματικό στρες, το οποίο και προκάλεσε ένα φρικτό δυστύχημα στο οποίο ενεπλάκη, κάποιες εβδομάδες νωρίτερα, και που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα μια αρκετά μακροχρόνια νοσηλεία της. Σε μια απέλπιδα προσπάθειά της να ξαναβρεί τους ρυθμούς και τις ισορροπίες της, μα και να κρατήσει το μυαλό της απασχολημένο και μακριά απ' όλα όσα την τρομάζουν, η Λίζα πιάνει δουλειά ως μπέιμπι σίτερ στο σπίτι μιας γειτόνισσάς της. Όμως, τότε είναι που οι εφιάλτες της αρχίζουν να βγαίνουν αληθινοί, με τους φίλους της να πεθαίνουν, κάτα από μυστηριώδεις συνθήκες, ο έναν μετά τον άλλον. Άραγε, συμβαίνει κάτι που δεν το χωράει ο ανθρώπινος νους, ή το μυαλό της τής παίζει παιχνίδια;

R.L. Stine was a household name when I was a kid and I still like to dip into a Goosebumps now and then for that burst of nostalgia. When I saw he'd released some YA books, I was intrigued. I picked up Don't Stay Up Late expecting chills... but instead, questioned whether it was time the revered author put down the pen.

I was so disappointed with the writing, which impacted my whole reading experience. Considering we're dealing with a multi-million bestselling author, this was written like a school kid's first draft of a formulaic horror story for elementary English. Grammar and tenses were all over the place, not to mention those cookie-cutter inclusions, like describing every character (hair colour, size, age, clothing) and 'telling' rather than showing (i.e. basic he said, she said)- it felt like the teacher had given him a checklist of everything you need to tick off when writing your first story. The editors at the very least should have picked up on all the glaring errors. The characters were so two-dimensional that I couldn't tell you a thing about them (other than their physical descriptions of course). Lisa goes through a seriously traumatic event at the start, and yet this is barely even touched on... I know we're targeting a middle-grade/YA audience but come on - give them something!

Writing aside, the plot was okay but not as creepy as I'd expect for a book aimed at an older audience (how this book is marketed as YA I'll never know). It was way too childish and don't even get me started on some of the outrageous choices the characters made / how unbelievably stupid they were. Ironically, the youngest Goosebumps readers probably have more common sense than the 16-year-olds collectively had in this book.

You need to draw the line somewhere right? For me, this is it. I'll be leaving R.L. Stine firmly in my past where I can continue to remember his books with fond memories.

Delightfully gruesome!
Lisa's life is turned upside down by a terrible car crash that claims her father's life. There is so much healing to be done. But which scars are the worst... the physical, or the mental?
Lisa soon goes back to school under the watchful eye of her psychiatrist and worrisome mother. Lisa even retains a job as a babysitter. However she soon realizes the money isn't worth babysitting this 8 year old boy.
Something terrible is happening on Fear Street and it's claiming the lives of Lisa's friends one by one. Will she discover the secrets and expose the truth; not to mention make it out...alive?
I can't say enough times how much I love RL Stine's writing. Just enough detail but not too much. The stories flow effortlessly from one conundrum to another. The characters are simple and believable. He is just an awesome writer.
Although I thought the ending was a little goofy (as per Stine's style), the book was awesome! I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading the next Fear Street installment. I highly recommend this book to teen readers and above.

20th read for reading curcol: #txtdariremaja hosted by Midnight Reading Club.

seperti biasa, buku2nya R.L. Stine bagi gw tuh page turner banget! horror tapi ringan gitu. nah, kalo buku ini nyeritain lisa yg baru aja abis kecelakaan mobil sekeluarga. sayangnya ayahnya meninggal. nah, dari situ dia akhirnya trauma krn masih suka kebayang2 adegan pas ayahnya meninggal. lisa jg punya pacar namanya nate.

terus nih, lisa kan konsul ke dokter ya. trs kata dokternya biar mulihin mental km dan bisa bersosialisasi pelan2 km kerja aja jd babysitter. krn butuh uang jg kan lisa n her mom, jdny lisa kerja deh ngasuh harry. nah, dr situ kejadian2 aneh mulai muncul menghantui lisa.

sbrny bagi gw yg agak ga masuk akal kenaPE SI IBUNYA LISA NGEBIARIN LISA KERJAAA PDHL LG MENTALLY UNSTABLEERE OHMYYYY😭. yaiyasi butuh duit tapi knp tetep dibolehin😭. trs jg krn gw udh tau pattern tulisannya om stine jd ga kaget sih sm twist-nya di akhir😆. tapi tetep seru kok sumpaaah!

When I found out R.L. Stine relaunched the Fear Street series, I immediately had all the nostalgia: Fourth grade, Goosebumps and Fear Street paperbacks littering my floor, the Nickelodeon channel on in the background.
And this book was a fun return- a quick read with some unbelievably creepy characters/monsters and some brief mentions of the Fear family.
Obviously it lacks a lot for adult readers but adults are going to read these purely for the nostalgia and this was pure entertainment for a trip down memory lane.
