This was the first book I've ever read by Mari Silva and I know that I will never be reading another one. Her writing is stilted and about as informative as the essays my students write. Supported by lots of internet research listicles and with a lot of the exact same information written in various combinations that make it clear that there was not enough THOROUGH research done, I feel as though I could write a more in-depth guide to folk magic in about half as many pages. A good revisionist would have gone through this book with a red pen that left so much repetitive information and phrasing cut out that it would look as though the book were bleeding.

A solid broad-stroke overview, though not quite what I was expecting with a title touting, "The Ultimate Guide."

This book was a great overview of different types of folk magic. It goes through not only the differences of types of regional practices, for example my favorite section dealing with Brujeria and Curanderismo in Chapter 3, but goes in depth in the history and comparisons of ancient practices and Modern practices of each type. The book later chapters gets into the symbolisms and even the type of herbs and spices used in the different folk magic. If you are interested in the subject as a anthropological study or want to get familiar with each type of folk magics or even if you want to start practicing in a particular form of folk magic this book will be useful.
