Arrow Video Announces October Releases

Posted July 26, 2019 04:33 PM by

Arrow VideoArrow Video
Arrow Video has announced its October batch of titles. Amongst them are An American Werewolf in London, The Dead Center, and Nightbreed.

The Dead Center

Synopsis: When a very dead suicide victim (Jeremy Childs, Preacher, Nashville) disappears from the morgue, it sets in motion a chain of events that has the power to immolate everything, and everyone, it touches.

Troubled psychiatrist Daniel Forrester (Shane Carruth, Primer, Upstream Color) is drawn to help a mysterious patient who is brought to the emergency psych ward in a catatonic state with no memory of how he reached the hospital. As if to exorcise his own demons, the doctor feverishly tries to break through to his mysterious patient. But as a spate of mysterious deaths shake the ward to its core, Forrester comes to suspect that there is more to his new ward than meets the eye. As he comes to realise what he's unleashed, a desperate race against the forces of evil threatens to swallow him whole.

The Dead Center is a smart supernatural thriller that explores the demons that live inside all of us from writer-director Billy Senese, recently hailed as a "masterful new voice in terror".

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • 5.1 DTS-HD master audio and lossless stereo audio
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
  • Commentary with writer-director Billy Senese, producer-actor Shane Carruth and co-star Jeremy Childs

Toys Are Not for Children

Synopsis: Psychological trauma and aberrant sexuality abound in this twisted 1972 tale of a young woman whose severe daddy issues send her on an unforgettably bleak downward spiral.

Yearning for the love of her absentee father, Jamie inhabits an infantilised world surrounded by toys, including those which her wayward pops bizarrely continues to send her. Unable to consummate her new marriage with dashing colleague Charlie, Jamie's chance encounter with aging sex worker Pearl leads her into the murky world of prostitution where her most disturbing erotic fantasies begin to play out.

Grim, quirky and strangely affecting in equal measure, Stanley H. Brasloff's Toys Are Not for Children is a truly one-of-a-kind effort from the heyday of the American exploitation independents, which builds to a haunting and devastating climax that lingers long after the credits roll.

Nightbreed

Synopsis: From the mind of writer/director Clive Barker – the macabre visionary responsible for Hellraiser and Candyman – comes Nightbreed, a nightmare-induced fantasy set in a world like nothing you've ever experienced before… one which will leave you questioning who the real monsters are.

By night, Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer, Teen Wolf) dreams of Midian, a hidden subterranean world where monsters have created a haven from humanity. Under pressure from his girlfriend Lori (Anne Bobby, Born on the Fourth of July), he attends psychotherapy sessions, unaware that his shrink, Dr Decker (Videodrome director David Cronenberg), is setting him up to take the fall for a series of violent murders. Convinced he no longer belongs in the human world, Boone goes in search of Midian – not realising that the real killer has plans for both him and the colourful cast of outsiders who call it home…

The victim of studio interference and an unrepresentative marketing campaign, Nightbreed was poorly received by critics on its initial release and failed to ignite the box office, but has since undergone a radical reappraisal. Arrow Video is proud to present two versions of this depraved cult classic: the studio-approved theatrical cut and the reconstructed, reinvigorated director's cut, for the ultimate nightmarish viewing experience.

Aniara

Synopsis: Fleeing an ecological disaster past the point of no return, what's left of humanity must escape the hell on Earth they've created and fly to the stars. Giant interstellar cruise liners, outfitted with every luxury money can buy, take the human race on a three-week journey to their new home: Mars.

On one such space liner, a woman known only as Mimaroben (Emelie Jonsson) assists the passengers as they use MIMA, an advanced AI, to lose themselves in memories of a time when the earth still thrived. Days into their voyage, disaster strikes the ship; debris throws them off course, depletes their fuel and cuts their comms. As the ship floats aimlessly through space with no sign of rescue, MR holds on to hope as society crumbles around her. She looks past certain doom to find a way to help her fellow survivors live, love and do whatever is necessary to hold on to their humanity.

Based on the iconic poem by Swedish Nobel laureate Harry Martinson, Aniara explores the challenges faced by humankind with a deeply compassionate eye. Featuring a career-making star performance from Jonsson, Aniara is a "Masterful Example Of Smart, Relevant Sci-Fi Cinema" (Forbes).

Special Features and Technical Specs:

Killer Nun

Synopsis: Aging blonde-bombshell Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita, Pick-up Alley) gives a full-bodied performance as a sex-crazed sister with some seriously bad habits in the lurid cult classic Killer Nun.

One of the most notorious 'nunsploitation' films, Killer Nun tells the sordid story of Sister Gertrude, a disturbed woman of the cloth who degenerates into a perverse mire of drug taking, sexual perversion, sadistic torture and murder. Joe Dallesandro (The Climber, Flesh for Frankenstein), Alida Valli (The Possessed, Suspiria) and the ample Paola Morra (Behind Convent Walls) offer spirited performances and able support to Ekberg, in this shocking tale based on real events.

Boasting an incongruously classy score by legendary composer Alessandro Alessandroni (Women's Camp 119) and stylishly rendered scenes of sex and murder, Killer Nun takes the viewer on hair-raising journey from the heights of religious ecstasy to the depths of devilish degeneracy. Now Giulio Berruti's sleazy classic is presented in a stunning new 2K restoration, with a liturgy of new extras, ready to be preyed upon.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • New 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative
  • Uncompressed mono 1.0 LPCM audio
  • Original English and Italian soundtracks, titles and credits
  • Newly translated English subtitles for the Italian soundtrack
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for the English soundtrack
  • New audio commentary by Italian genre film connoisseurs Adrian J. Smith and David Flint

  • Our Mother of Hell, a new interview with actress Ileana Fraia
  • Original Italian and international theatrical trailers
  • Image gallery
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Daryl Joyce
U.S. STREET DATE: OCTOBER 22.

Ringu Collection

Synopsis: In 1998, director Hideo Nakata (Dark Water) unleashed a chilling tale of technological terror on unsuspecting audiences, which redefined the horror genre, launched the J-horror boom in the West and introduced a generation of moviegoers to a creepy, dark-haired girl called Sadako. The film's success spawned a slew of remakes, reimaginations and imitators, but none could quite boast the power of Nakata's original masterpiece, which melded traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary anxieties about the spread of technology.

A group of teenage friends are found dead, their bodies grotesquely contorted, their faces twisted in terror. Reiko (Nanako Matsushima, When Marnie Was There), a journalist and the aunt of one of the victims, sets out to investigate the shocking phenomenon, and in the process uncovers a creepy urban legend about a supposedly cursed videotape, the contents of which causes anyone who views it to die within a week – unless they can persuade someone else to watch it, and, in so doing, pass on the curse…

Arrow Video is proud to present the genre-defining trilogy – Ringu, the film that started it all, plus Hideo Nakata's chilling sequel, Ringu 2, and the haunting origin story, Ringu 0 – as well as the 'lost' original sequel, George Iida's Spiral, gathered together in glorious high definition and supplemented by a wealth of archival and newly created bonus materials.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • Brand New 4K restoration of Ringu from the original camera negative, approved by director of photography Junichiro Hayashi
  • Lossless Japanese DTS-HD master audio 5.1 and PCM 2.0 soundtracks
  • Optional English subtitles
  • Bonus feature: Spiral, George Iida's 1998 sequel to Ringu
  • New Audio commentary on Ringu by film historian David Kalat
  • New Audio commentary on Ringu 0 by author and critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
  • The Ringu Legacy, a series of new interviews from critics and filmmakers on their memories of the Ringu series and its enduring legacy
  • A Vicious Circle, a new video interview with author and critic Kat Ellinger on the career of Hideo Nakata
  • Circumnavigating Ringu, a new video essay by author and critic Kat Ellinger on the evolution of the Ringu series
  • Spooks, Sighs and Videotape, a new video essay by critic Jasper Sharp on the J-horror phenomenon
  • The Psychology of Fear, a newly edited archival interview with author Koji Suzuki
  • Archival behind-the-scenes featurette on Ringu 0
  • Ringu 0 deleted scenes
  • Sadako's Video
  • Multiple theatrical trailers for the Ringu series
  • First pressing only: Limited edition 60-page booklet featuring new writing from Violet Lucca, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Jasper Sharp, Kieran Fisher and Kat Ellinger
  • Limited edition packaging featuring original and newly commissioned artwork

Underwhelmed with this announcement. Arrow is bottom barreling with some of the genre film releases recently. Nightbreed has a great release from Shout Factory already. It is nice that they are porting over the UK Ringu collection for the US market and the American boxset is a nice deluxe package, but I don't see anything else of consequence here.

The Dead Center and Aniara look interesting, and the Werewolf set admittedly looks very cool, but the real star here is that Ringu set, which I'm freaking ecstatic is being released here in the U.S. That's a Day 1 buy if I've ever seen one.

@thehornedone Not everyone can afford to import titles, and Shout’s release of Nightbreed is region locked, besides. There’s still a ton of work that goes into these titles, so it’s inaccurate and unfair to call Arrow “bottom barrelling.”

Wondering how serious they are about a US edition of their Elvira BD before getting the upcoming, questionable quality RLJ edition. If that's actually possible when another label is already doing it in the US, why did they have to lock their UK release? I mean, considering how widespread the hate for region coding is, it seems a pretty stupid thing to do voluntarily. I'd MUCH rather hold out for Arrow, assuming the rumor wasn't based on some empty promise.

Aw man, I'm pissed that I bought the Region B Ringu box set. I always prefer to have things in Region A even though I have a region-free player I use only for imports. I won't double dip that one but I'll be picking up most of these. Gonna stick with my Scream Factory Nightbreed, though. I'm happy with it.

@thundertruck: I agree, except for when the initial release is OOP, especially if they're not going to give it a rather dramatic facelift or bring enough new to the table to warrant double dipping.

I'm really quite happy to see Arrow tackling more of these high profile, studio owned titles. Having had the pleasure of working with James White, who's in charge of overseeing many of Arrow's restorations, I can attest to his quality standards and commitment to ensuring that the final presentations reflect the original theatrical viewing experience (i.e. color grades, framing, etc) as closely as possible. This is not to say that there aren't sometimes instances where contractual obligations mandate the inclusion of less than ideal presentations, but Arrow, more than any other label selling high profile studio titles in the US, does their best to offer the films as they were supposed to be seen.

I've never purchased an Arrow release, but I'm getting that some have them as highly regarded releases. Is this true? I've only ever collected Criterion releases of my favorite films, but I'm excited for the America Werewolf in London release, so now I'm wondering if I should grab this and would it be worth it picture quality wise. I see they don't do 4k UHD Blurays yet just 4k remastered releases on Blu.

@MikeK84

I'm glad somebody agrees with me. I'm beginning to think video companies should recall their discs, like auto manufacturers do with cars. They recall the discs, put everything on them that's missing (new remaster, bonus features, etc.), and then send them back to us. Voila.

@Johnny Neat. I'll use a Shout analogy since the two labels are so often compared, partially because they release a lot of the same titles in different markets: Think Shout Factory collectors edition, but with FAR more effort and a more competent, quality job that's more worthy of the pricetag. I think Arrow seems to be on the level of Criterion, only with more mainstream titles than Criterion usually puts out. They seem to put the effort in from the quality of their presentations down to the effort of their finished product. Where Shout is more like Olive Garden (frozen food at fresh prices). Shout does better work than fast food labels like Mill Creek But, they charge considerably more than what the finished product warrants and do too much corner cutting and cheap makeovers (compared to proper restorations/remasters). Either they're grossly mismanaged (ineffective marketing and/or paying too much for mostly gimmicky fluff rather than substantial content and product improvement), or they're marking up their product, unjustifiably. I've feel like I get more of a bargain paying $30 for a special edition from Arrow than paying $20 ($15 in rare cases) for ANY special edition Shout has produced in the past few years.
