Booked the apartment which can sleep 6. It comes with private bath and kitchen facilities plus 3 rooms. Very spacious. There are also shared toilets and bathrooms in the common area. While this is not downtown, it’s right by the lighthouse and coast. Makoto-san is a great host and helped us book an amazing local robata restaurant for a birthday celebration.

Kushiro is a compact city. When I was there in February 2024 the city was fairly quiet. Kushiro is a good place to stay if you are interested in seeing the Red crowned-cranes (Tancho). The Akan International Crane Center is just over an hour away by public bus. It's also possible to travel to the wetlands and the many lakes in the area.
The Kushiro City Museum is very good with displays of the natural history, geology and Tancho.
There are also wonderful sunsets that can be seen in various parts of the city.

I love the city.
I love the city. You must spent at least 2 days to try their foods here. You must visit "Washow Ichiba" and buy dried seefood such as dried hotate, hotate himo, etc. Try "Senbousi" oyster which was biggest oyster in my life. Kushiro is also great for sight seeing. Kushiro is a good base camp to travel the east part of Hokkaido. Renting a car and drive to nearby cities, such as Akkesi, Nemuro, Akan, Mashu and many others. I am really sad that the population here is decreasing and they economy is going down. I will revisit here optern to cheer up people here and their life style.

Kushiro is nice and cool in the summer.
Kushiro is nice and cool in the summer. The city is not in good financial condition though based on the number of rundown buildings that have been abandoned, many of them on the main street Kitadori. Even the entertainment district - adjacent to the hotel has both many izakaya restaurants as well as shuttered businesses including department stores. I think it is the result of the bursting of the bubble economy way back when. The city overbuilt but there are many cities in Japan that did the same including Otaru which is also on the decline. I hope both cities recover.
The Kushiro Library (5 years old) though is fabulous, one of the best libraries I've been in. And the annual festival in August was very good to see including the fireworks.

I went to Kushiro because I love When Marnie Was There, a Ghibli’s animation, and the Mashland from Where the Crawdads Sing. I visited Lake Toro and Hosooka Viewpoint. Those two places are now dear to my heart. While I was on the trail to Toro Sarurun Observatory, I saw dears, falcons(?) and a Japanese crane! I’d recommend to visit on weekdays if you could. It was so quiet and peaceful :)
The Kushiro town itself had its own charm too! Just in the city, there were 2 big art galleries and the Kushiro City Museum that was worth visiting. Clearly, there are more of Kushiro to explore. I went there and I’m in love the place. It’d be nice if the same happens to you too!

We enjoyed the train trip from Sapporo to Kushiro and from Kushiro to Nemuro. The latter trip was in a single carriage train and you could open the window and enjoy the view. We also went to the International Crane Centre. The display was good but there were only four cranes in fenced enclosures as the wild cranes had already dispersed. We did see a few wild cranes in fields from the train. The board-walk at the International Crane Centre was a disgrace. It was rotten and a section collapsed as we were walking on it.

We went to Kushiro mainly for the red crown cranes but I found the town charming and its people very friendly. The fish market had great products at much better prices than Sapporo as well. We found two great eateries too, despite not being able to speak Japanese.

This is an old-school Japanese hotel - in a good way! All of the staff - especially Kaori-san were very polite and helpful. The room I booked was a very good size. The bathroom had a very nice shower.
Breakfast was superb, a choice of main course with a good buffet. There's a nice lounge area with complementary wine and a venison curry-rice in the evening.
This hotel was so comfortable and just across the road from the Train Station.
The room was a great size for Japanese standards.
The breakfast was great.
The only thing was we only got to stay there one night.
The staff were so friendly.
We will make sure we stay longer if we come back.
Thanks for having us.
Room containing all necessary amenities, with cooking possibility and washing machine.
Bright room, that was big for Japanese standards and was more like a studio.
Close to a well-stocked supermarket.
