Southwold is a small, pretty town.
Southwold is a small, pretty town. Re-built after fire destroyed it in the seventeenth century, it has many small or larger green spaces originally designed as firebreaks but now adding to the town's charm.
The beach is relatively wide and mainly sandy, with small pebbles and stones mixed into the sand in places. There is a friendly café in at the south end of the beach - do not be put off by the ever-present smell of cooking bacon.
In mid-September there appeared to be a shortage of restaurant spaces - it was essential to book for an evening meal, and possibly for lunch. Restaurant prices seemed slightly high compared to Surrey... We particularly enjoyed The Sail Loft and the bar in the Ship Inn, which did not require booking, seemed more spacious and had the same menu as the dining area.

Great beaches and pier (check out the Tim Hunkin crazy machines), hard to get dinner in any of the pubs or hotels, I strongly recommend booking before you travel in the summer. Found a great little burger joint on the High Street called Jack's, had one the the best burgers ever!!
The lifeboat museum is well worth a visit, as are the fish and chip booths down by the marina (10 minute walk along the coast), and from there you can be ferried across the river in a rowing boat to visit Walberswick (also very lovely).

Just stayed overnight for this visit- been before. Really good choice of eating and drinking venues for most budgets with some great walk in fine dining. Excellent dinner at the Crown hotel. Really friendly staff everywhere; obviously happy to be in Southwold. Shout out for the brilliantly friendly ferry lady who rowed us over to Walberswick !

It’s a very pleasant seaside town does get busy at weekends, some nice little shops on the high street.Parking can be an issue due to having to pay by app especially with the Wi-Fi being poor especially around the pier.

Excellent breakfasts and main courses at dinner. Light clean and well appointed room . Sense of history in the property going back a century. I felt very looked after and putcat ease by the staff.I enjoyed being somewhat away from Southwold, which was within walking distance . Liked the quiet location.Rather nice objects around the hotel. The music in the bar was well chosen.
Everything went very smoothly. The hotel staff were all very friendly and efficient. The room was comfy with everything in it that I would have wanted fo find. Breakfast was lovely. Location of the hotel couldn't be better, being right in the centre of Southwold.
