It's a nice little town from which to explore the northern part of the Lakes. There's not a heap of stuff to do, and the Ullswater steamers are rapidly pricing themselves out of the market (£24 return per adult now!!!). But the hostel is lovely, the shop staff are really nice, and Aira Force is very close for a nice afternoon.
The town itself doesn't have a huge number of places to eat, and some of them close early (5-ish), so you may need to look further afield for food, such as the Royal Oak or the Pooley Bridge Inn.
To get to the other towns in the lakes, you either need to go back to the M6, or up and over towards Keswick (which is the wrong way for most of the lakes) or over the Kirkstone Pass which can be a little hairy for some timid drivers. The road up through Matterdale to the A66 and across to Keswick gives a few nice places to stop and take a walk, and then once in Keswick you can follow the A591south to Grasmere. It's a little longer, but a much less spicy drive.
Nearby is Pooley Bridge, which you may need to pass through on the way to Glenridding. It's another lovely town with a brilliant book shop, a renknowned Gin shop and a lovely souvenir shop that sells excellent fudge. and places to eat if Glenridding doesn't have what you need.

What's not to like, except that it may be busy in summer.
What's not to like, except that it may be busy in summer. Beautiful scenery. Attractive village with a stream through the centre. Stunning mountains are great for exploring; beautiful Ullswater is great for water-sports and boating. Nice gift shop sells decent English Lakes ice cream and an outdoor gear shop is well stocked. Many come here to climb Helvellyn and you can get a certificate from the Information Centre.

Glenridding the gateway to Ullswater.
Glenridding the gateway to Ullswater. I chose the Ullswater Inn for it's location as it's right in the heart of everything. Access to Lake Ullswater is a stones throw from the Inn. Plenty of walks and beautiful scenery, whatever the weather.
The food at the Ullswater is prepared fresh to your order and is of a high standard, no need to go looking to eat elsewhere. I can fully recommend the porridge at breakfast.
Chris and the team really make you feel welcome and do everything they can to make your stay a thing to remember.

Wasn't expected the cleanliness of the toilets, they were like in hotels, sparkling clean which i didn't see in other YHA toilets normally though they were for both, no separate for male/female. Had wonderful dinner with very helpful staff. Location is amazing.
