The room was fine
The restaurant was not open
Breakfast was awful. A buffet that looked like it had been laid out the week before. Nothing was replaced when gone, and no explanation of how to use the appliances to make toast or a hot drink. Worst breakfast of a 10 day trip.
This charming coastal hotel is located just 150 meters from Salve Beach in Laredo and is set within beautiful gardens. The colonial-style El Ancla serves breakfast at any time of day.

The building is a very unusual 12-sided tower looking down on the beautiful town of Laredo. The apartment was comfortable & spacious with reasonable facilities for a short stay.

Laredo has a lovely old part to the town with a huge number of places to eat and drink. There is also a beautiful Gothic style church with a Guide who speaks English. 1,euro entry. The Comino trail runs along the coast and through the town so is easily accessible.
Near to the harbour/marina is a tunnel which runs through the cliff about 200 metres. Free. There are murals on the walls of fish.
A trip to Santona by boat is well worth it as it goes out across the bay to see the lighthouse and along the coast to see the old Forts. There is also an excellent natural history museum which looks at the history of the area and the wildlife. Free entry. There is also a footpath where you can walk out to the Forts and lighthouse.
The Alsa coach service runs coaches all over Spain and are very reasonable, best to book online. Santander to Laredo direct took 40minutes and cost 22euros for seniors. The coaches have reclining seats, WiFi, toilets.
The area is very Spanish with few people speaking English but they are extremely helpful.

I disagree with some of the negative comments about Laredo on this website. If you are looking for somewhere which is very touristy and commercialised it is not for you. If, however, you are looking to get a genuine Spanish experience and mingle with the locals (a smattering of Spanish is sometimes handy) then it is a great place. The locals are very friendly and there are some lovely cafes and restaurants. A walk round the old town is very interesting, and you get a real feel for its history.

Hard to find somewhere to have dinner, pinchos on offer were limited. It feels a little jaded, took the short ferry across to Santona and it was a much more lively place, I would recommend going there.

Lots of onsite parking at the hotel. We ate in the bar/restaurant in the evening where we had amazing food and great hospitality. We had a suite which was far more comfortable that we had expected. The shower was good. The breakfast is something else. Lots to choose from, you won't leave on an empty stomach in the morning.
Great nautically themed hotel near the centre of town. A place of real character where nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast is served in the garden but there is no other meal option. We really enjoyed our stay here.
The location was amazing both for hitting the nearby Laredo beach (less than 5 mins walk) plus getting to other beaches like Somo (where we went for a surf)
