Maps don't do justice to the steep hills of this town!
Maps don't do justice to the steep hills of this town! It's spectacularly scenic and you'll work off your food and beverages climbing the cobblestones. The bazaar is very touristy but the sidewalk cafes are lively and it's easy to find good food.
If you're taking a taxi from the bus terminal, walk a few blocks away and avoid the drivers who swarm you when you get off the bus. There are city buses but the schedules are not so regular. Once you are in the old town, it is very walkable - if you leave the stilettos behind. We did a day trip to Butrint via Saranda on public buses, which was long but worthwhile.

Gjirokastra is a beautiful city with so much history and charm. There is something for everyone. While there are many shops, busy bars and upscale restaurants, we enjoyed quieter areas and family run bars, cafes and restaurants. We loved exploring the old town and quaint neighbourhoods around the castle and the house museums and just wandering around the charming streets and laneways. We met many friendly locals.

Certainly worth a visit for the history.
Certainly worth a visit for the history. For a Northern European visitor a unique town, architecture and landscape. Pressure of tourism a bit distracting which we are ourselves responsible for and should be mindful of.

Beautiful historic city.
Beautiful historic city. The castle and cold war bunker are a great way to learn more about the cities history, from ancient times to Communist rule. Beautiful shops, great local restaurants and spectacular valley/mountain views. It felt safe and friendly everywhere. Numerous street dogs, but all friendly and relaxed.

Although Gjirokaster is in all tourist guidelines of visiting Albania, it is not as touristy as Sarande or Ksamil. It felt very authentic and you can easily find authentic restaurants that are not a tourist trap. The city is quiet, but you can find places to have a drink in the evening. The castle is an absolute must-see even if you've seen historic places a lot in your life. I would also suggest visiting Ali Pasha bridge, since it's a small hike and feels very rural, although quite close to the city.
Keep in mind that the city is located in mountains, so a lot of climbing up and down when moving around. But the city offers so many small restaurants and bars, that you can take a break with a cold drink almost on every corner. We really enjoyed Gjirokaster and will definitely come back.

The location of the hotel is very convenient in amongst the old town and just below the castle. The old town is easy to walk around (though the old town of Gjirokaster is on a hill for those that are infirm). You can drive your car to the hotel where there is free parking. The hotel itself is lovely with a large and characterful room and a very welcome swimming pool. The owners and staff are were very welcoming and helpful - they were great. Breakfast was large, filling, and very tasty. I would recommend a stay here.
Very welcoming host and relaxed atmosphere. We felt like home immediately and jumped into the swimming pool after our travel. We booked two double rooms for our family of four. Beds, airconditioning and the balcony are nice. Bathroom is also sufficient but the opened door is blocking moving there. We also recommend the breakfast which contains fresh fruit and home made dishes.
The hotel is 5 min drive from the old center of Gjirokaster and it’s very easy to find.
We loved Hotel Praga. Only stayed the one night but felt very welcome. Isabella was really helpful in sorting our bus to Berat the day we checked out and we were able to leave our luggage in the dining room while we explored Gjirokaster.
Breakfast was good, and the pool is a big bonus - especially during a heatwave. Possibly most importantly, the hotel has a pet tortoise who chills around the pool.
DAM Stone Boutique Hotel is a true gem in Gjirokaster. Very recently refurbished with so, so much care and attention to detail. Beds are incredibly comfortable, views are stunning, and the rooms are gorgeous. Can't praise this place enough!
Super nice and modern and clean with very nice staff who gave us good recommendations! I would recommend this hotel to anyone that wants to visit Gjirokaster!
