The cardan ring has been replaced by an unusual suspension: the entire boiler with weight rests on the compass pin, which balances with a ball on top of a rod in the bottom of the compass housing, a spring is provided in the rod, which absorbs vertical shocks. This steam engine has two pistons (left), connected to a crank shaft supplying the power to each paddle wheel. An old engraving of a tubular (tubulous or sectional pipe) boiler made by David Napier in Scotland in the early 1880s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This type of boiler was the ‘haystack’ type, first adapted to marine requirements by Napier in 1842. Napier’s boilers were fitted in a number of early Clyde steamers and were extensively used in small steamships. David Napier (1790–1869) was a Scottish marine engineer. Napier took over the family foundry and established a reputation as one of the best builders of marine engines in Scotland.
