2022, IAR-ARDE 2022 PROCEEDINGS BOOK
In Anatolia, especially in the mosques built after the 20th century, the search for different forms from the old periods and modern designs that change in terms of architecture come to the fore. Terzi Baba Mosque, which has become one of the symbols of Erzincan province in Eastern Anatolia, is a structure that can be considered in this sense. The project construction of Terzibaba Mosque, designed by the architect Danyal Tevfik Çiper (1932-2008), started in 1990. The building, whose foundation was laid in 1991 during the time of Prime Minister of the time, Yıldırım Akbulut, was opened to worship in 2002. Financial difficulties and the great Erzincan earthquake that occurred in 1992 during the construction process caused the mosque to be completed at the end of 12 years. The building, which has a congregation capacity of approximately 7000 people in terms of usage area, has taken its place in the literature as the largest mosque in Eastern Anatolia. Within the scope of this study, after mentioning the importance of Terzi Baba, who gave the mosque its name, for Erzincan, it has been revealed what kind of architectural changes the Terzi Baba Mosque has undergone from its design to the present day in the first construction and application stages. In which phases of the architectural project designed and expected to be implemented by the architect, the application differences were made and the reasons were emphasized. The aim of the study is to reveal the architectural features of the symbolic mosque of Erzincan, which was designed by Tevfik Çiper, who designed many different and modern building designs at the time it was made, and which was not adopted by the public at first, but which is appreciated by both the local people and those who visit from other cities. As a research method, data analysis obtained as a result of on-site observation, spatial analysis and periodic comparisons was used. Although it has been the subject of several studies and theses, these researches remained superficial, application details and spatial transformations were not discussed. In this sense, it is thought that the study will contribute to the literature on the architectural construction features of the mosque and the differences in practice.

Artuklu Dönemi Mimarisinin Anadolu Cami Tipolojisindeki Etkilerinin İncelenmesi2021 •

İnciciyan’a göre; 18.

On reading the meanings carried by the zigzag design employed in Islamic art-İslam Sanatında Zikzak Deseni ve Anlamları Üzerine Bir Okuma (Abstract)2017 •
Although the zigzag design has been noted repeatedly by art historians from the 19th century onwards as found on many works of Islamic art, on minarets, as on flags and banners and on other textiles, carved in relief on domes, on palace and city walls and on tombs, painted on exterior and interior walls, incised or cast in relief on metal candlesticks, painted on a wide range of ceramics and displayed on other material surfaces, from the 1st c. h./8th c. A.D. down to the present day, that is, over the course of more than one-thousand two hundred years, to date this noteworthy marker pattern termed zigzag, employed within an Islamic religious-cultural context, has not itself been read. Employed within a religious-cultural context where it was understood that signs-designs-patterns carried meaning: 1)Sura Fussilat, 41:53, “We will show them Our signs in all the regions of the earth and in their own souls, until they clearly see this is the truth”. 2)Sura Al-Dhariyat, 51:22, “On earth and in yourselves there are signs for firm believers. Can you not see them?” And being aware that “Nothing is greater than the remembrance of God” Sura Al-‘Ankabut, 29:46, it seems reasonable to enquire into the reasons why was this particular design was employed by designers-nakkaş in those places where it was deployed? What did it signify? For art historians to recognise and record the presence of a particular type of design, amongst the numerous designs and combination of designs, patterns, shapes and forms employed in Islamic art, the particular design identified through the use of a particular term, is of course worthwhile, a typology can be established, but a typology of form alone is somewhat devoid of content and meaning. For example it has been suggested by art historians and others that this design signified: “running water”, it was a development from, or a type of, the “meander” pattern that has been employed for millennia – and therefore carried a general meaning amongst peoples, rather than a religious and culturally specific meaning within an Islamic context; or that it was employed as a marker of Rum Seljuk state buildings; while the term/word “zigzag” employed to describe this pattern is said to have been derived from the German word for teeth, or is of an unknown etymology. This presentation suggests that this design carried a series of religious meanings when employed within an Islamic context. That the “zigzag” design was “read” in the literal sense, in the combination of the written Arabic numbers 7 and 8 joined together. These, when added together total 15, with these two numbers summed, thereby a repeat design read as representing the repetition of the number 6. The number 6 representing the letter wav meaning “and”, as in “and Allah”; and, as also representing the sum of the total number of Sura in the Holy Quran, 1+1+4=6. The repeat of the number 6 being read as both representing and repeating the numerical equivalent of the Name Allah, 66, visually read as zikr, wav=6 +Allah (66), as also reminding of the traditional total number of letters forming the Holy Quran, 6,666. Hence the use of this design on the Kaba Kiswah, on minarets as on flags and tombs as on tomb coverings etc. Further, there is the association of this design with light, as it has been employed to represent the reflection of sunlight from the surface of water, as also employed to represent the reflection of light from a polished mirror, as also a design on candlesticks, thereby reminding of the relationship between sun and sunlight and The Light of the Almighty, a design employed by the designers-nakkaş as a sign, to remind in this temporal world of the nur ilahi, of the Light of the Almighty.
