The 21st century Islamic identity has gone through much scrutiny by the West. In the fight against terror, the leaders of Non-Muslim countries have identified terror as a religious conflict dividing the global sphere into Islamic extremists and Its opposition. This brief analyses such Xenophobic policies through the lens of Social Identity Theory developed by Tajfel and Turner in 1979.
In the early modern period the educated elite, be it clergymen, jurists or physicians, wrote anti-witchcraft treatises, known as demonologies, which included concepts such as the demonic pact, the night flight, and the Sabbat. The introduction of these demonological ideas and their application in the witchcraft trials had devastating consequences across Europe. Demonologists relied heavily on the Bible to prove the reality of witches and witchcraft. In this talk Dr Alinda Damsma will discuss biblicism in the elite discourse of witchcraft. She will explain why some biblical verses and passages became loci classici, whereas others that also dealt with magic, divination and witchcraft were overlooked by the demonologists.
