Universitat Jaume I, Castellón., 2006

In 1733 the council of the Sevillian hospital of foundlings of St Joseph, better known as ‘Casa Cuna’, settled to demolish the old chapel and to build a new one by the architect Diego Antonio Díaz. This paper focus on this unknown and disappeared example of the Sevillian Baroque art throughout new documents that clear its construction and the artists and craftsmen involved. The most relevant of them was the sculptor Pedro Duque Cornejo, who carved a new image of St Joseph commissioned by the merchant José Alonso de Ortigosa. This sculpture, now preserved in the stores of the Diputación Provincial of Seville, is analysed and related to other works by Cornejo. Furthermore, a biographical sketch of the donor is provided.
