Worldwide, public authorities are trying to improve uptake, efficiency and interoperability of ICT support for (telemedical) healthcare services through adoption and enforcement of standards and guidelines, such as IHE XDS and HL7. Furthermore, security concerns are often enforced by requiring services to run inside healthcare VPNs. Finally access control is tailored for authorized healthcare professionals, not citizens. However, closed network solutions along with big and hard to comprehend standards slow down uptake of solutions and access control regimes hold back interaction between initiatives in public and private sectors. With these major challenges in mind, we take inspiration from existing business and software ecosystem approaches and theories and formulate the question: how can we form a dynamic ecosystem of healthcare technology and services in order to allow easier and more flexible development, integration and application of new services, as well as accelerate the adop...

DiHECO – Digital healthcare ecosystem research and networkingThe DiHECO project aims at studying the role and potential of digital healthcare platforms in the European, mostly publicly arranged, healthcare service ecosystem. The project, divided into a few subprojects, tries to identify areas of research that can grow into impactful larger European projects with industry co-operation. DiHECO aims also at further developing the capacity of participants, particularly the Kaunas University of Technology, to perform relevant research in this area. In its first year, the project has made progress according to plan through joint research activities and networking events. These include the digital health tracks of the researcher and industry forum of the ICTE 2021 conference and two grant writing workshops and a scientific writing workshop.
Due to the strong economic efforts required for de veloping innovative solutions in new promising markets, such those rela ted to eHealth, the sustainability of investment becomes a key element for large and small companies.. Even if it can't guarantee market succe ss, following standards can help guaranteeing long-lasting solutions. Among all innovative sectors, eHealth represents one of the most challenging sectors from the standardization viewpoint as it combines different domains typical of medicin e with other issues such as security, safety, ethics or social guidelines. Most likely, this fragmentation of competences is a component of the difficult diffusi on of standards which undoubtedly characterizes eHealth and is a justific ation of the efforts carried out at an international level, in order to involve all its stakeholders. The aim of the present paper is describing how information on appl ied security and identity management standardization can be provided to users, a...
Purpose – Connected Health is an emerging and rapidly developing field never before witnessed across the healthcare sector. It has the potential to transform healthcare service systems by increasing its safety, quality and overall efficiency. However, as healthcare technologies or medical devices continuously rely more on software development, one of the core challenges is examining how Connected Health is regulated – often impacting Connected Health innovation. The purpose of this paper is to present an understanding of how Connected Health is regulated. Many of these regulatory developments fall under " medical devices " , giving rise to Software-as-a-Medical Device (SaaMD). Design/methodology/approach – Through an extensive literature review, this paper demystifies Connected Health regulation. It presents the outcome of expert discussions which explore the key regulatory developments in the context of Connected Health to provide a practical guide to understanding how regulation can potentially shape healthcare innovation. Findings – Several key issues are identified, and the authors present a comprehensive overview of regulatory developments relating to Connected Health with a view to support the continued growth of IT-enabled healthcare service models. The authors also identify the key challenges in Connected Health and identify areas for future research. Originality/value – A key outcome of this research is a clearer understanding of the opportunities and challenges that regulation and standards present to Connected Health. Furthermore, this research is of critical importance in a first attempt towards recognising the impact of regulation and standards compliance in Connected Health.
