The UAE's Rising Military Role in Africa: Defending Interests, Advancing Influence2024 •
The UAE’s military role in Africa follows three patterns. 1.The first is the countering of jihadi terrorism (al-Qaeda; IS), insurgent groups related to the Muslim Brotherhood (an organization the UAE lists as terrorist), and piracy: the goal is supporting African states to develop/improve defense capacity through military training and education. 2.The second pattern regards military provision and cooperation in the defense industry sector: the goal is tightening stability-oriented partnerships with governments in countries where the UAE invests. 3.The third pattern relates to the Emirati reported activity in conflict landscapes, usually denied by the Emirati authorities, to enhance its influence through the military support to non-state armed actors. In each cooperation case, one pattern tends to prevail on the others; however, two patterns can be co-present in the same theatre. This three-pronged strategy of military presence in Africa also entails a flexible scheme of military outposts -comprising Yemen- which are established, expanded or temporarily used by the Emiratis to support their goals.

Povjesničarka umjetnosti Ana Deanović i njezin doprinos povijesti fortifikacijske arhitekture i fortifikacijskoga nazivlja / Art Historian Ana Deanović and Her Contribution to the History of Fortification Architecture and Fortification Terminology2024 •
Art historian and conservator Ana Deanović (1919–1989) conducted significant research on fortification architecture in the historical-artistic context of the second half of the twentieth century. Although skilled in various aspects of her profession, as an experienced researcher, she focused on researching fortification architecture and publishing works on this subject, mainly from the 1970s. She was particularly interested in the developmental stages of monument construction and the renowned architects and military engineers involved in the territory of present-day Croatia, including Michelozzo Michelozzi, Juraj Dalmatinac, Michele and Giangirolamo Sanmicheli. She presented at international conferences, advocating and warning about the fortifications of the territory of Croatia that belonged to the innovative Early Modern European types of fortifications. Deanović attempted to systematise Croatian historical fortification terms in “Glosar naziva”. This work was a novelty in Croatian art history, where she compiled a corpus of more than three hundred terms from several languages. The focus was systematically presenting the terms used in literature and historical documents. The glossary reveals that many terms were repeated due to their different meanings and were primarily listed in foreign languages. While previous scholars had noted terminological issues in Croatian art history, particularly in fortification architecture, Deanović was the first to conduct foundational research on the subject. Her research on the history of fortification architecture is significant and innovative on three levels. First, it provides insight into fortification architecture in the territory of Croatia, including both coastal and continental areas from antiquity to modern times. Second, it explores the relationship between early modern fortification architecture in Croatia and its European context. Finally, it represents pioneering research on Croatian fortification terminology.

At just after six in the evening on 16 June 1851, a balloon carrying two passengers narrowly avoided crashing into the transept of the Crystal Palace. This near-disastrous balloon ascent was the result of just one of the popular entertainments that sprang up to capitalize on the crowds of visitors to the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in London in 1851. Despite the fact that on this occasion popular entertainment and didactic recreation almost literally collided, histories of the Exhibition have kept the two separate. It is notable that today the Great Exhibition is most often studied through sources such as Dickinson's Comprehensive Pictures of the Great Exhibition of 1851 (1852), the Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue (1851), or the Illustrated London News, all aimed at middle-class audiences. However, cheap broadside ballads also commented on the Exhibition and offer alternative perspectives on the event. This paper focuses on these neglected sources and reads them within a broader network of literary and visual sources.

Rethinking the music curriculum theories: Towards an updated comprehensive student-centred approach2024 •
This article reports a theoretical investigation on music curriculum and explores the factors that shape the practice of music education in terms of the official and other music curricula. We drew on relevant literature and explored four key aspects of the design and implementation of music curriculum: policy-making contexts, teaching practices, students' practices and attitudes, and school contexts. Currently, music education research focuses on student-centredness as an important element in music practice. Embracing students' various ways of musical engagement as well as their music identities promotes further development of their musical-social skills and enhances their interests. We suggest the development of an updated and comprehensive music curriculum which is studentcentred and based on new musical literacies that respond to students' daily musical needs and address the challenges of today's social context. Our suggestion is encompassed in five core principles: 1) Getting to know our students, 2) Discussing the teaching-learning goals with our students, 3) Adapting to local conditions, 4) Bottom-up and topdown perspectives: Finding the balance through authentic classroom activities, and 5) Contextualising assessment. The article advocates for the effective use of all types of music curricula so that students become active, responsible and critical thinkers in their personal, social and musical lives.
