While we can’t be dogmatic in this case, I think we should consider the possibility the repentant thief could have been an already eternally saved man. Here could be an example of an individual who trusted God to forgive his sins and save him when he was a young boy. We can’t rule out the possibility that his mother was a godly woman who taught him about God and the promised Messiah, yet who, when he became a young man drifted away from his religious training and got mixed up with the wrong crowd. It’s possible that, while dying on his cross, he remembered things his mother taught him about God and His promises, and he became a repentant child of God. In this man’s case we could have an example of a mother’s prayers for her saved, yet wayward son, being answered at his death.

Like any authority, A. E. Housman's edition of the Roman satirist Juvenal remains a source for research, including notes in The Housman Society Journal on Rutupiae in the fourth satire or 'Thule' in the fifteenth. The former is Richborough, Kent; the latter seems to be Iceland, for 'Thule' is apparently a corruption of Greek Thymele 'altar-slab'. It implies that the explorer Pytheas discovered Iceland in about 306 BCE, the island's volcanoes and blocklike appearance reminding him of fire on an altar. If so, it shows how perception of landscape supports emendation.
