This chapter outlines some key trends in twentieth- and twenty-first-century classical scholarship on Thucydides and argues that knowledge of this scholarship is important for all who appeal to Thucydides in other disciplines and public life. It looks at the ways in which Thucydides’ status as “trustworthy” and “scientific” has been challenged and reconfigured. Approaches which originated in other disciplines have shaped classicists’ and ancient historians’ work on Thucydides considerably. When classics and ancient history are in dialogue with other disciplines, fresh perspectives on the History usually emerge for all parties. Cross-disciplinary dialogue even allows Thucydides a continuing, productive role in theoretical controversies concerning the nature, limits, and uses of historical narrative and inquiry.

Thucydides on Early Greek History2017 •
This chapter studies Thucydides’ account of early Greek history in the “Archaeology” (1.1.2–1.21.2). It shows that Thucydides’ criteria of development and his reconstruction of history are heavily influenced by power relations in Greece during the early stages of the Peloponnesian War. Comparison with other sources for both the legendary and the historical past reveals the extent to which Thucydides, by means of omission, selective emphasis, and skewed interpretation, manipulates traditions that were well known to Athenian audiences, in order to create his distinctive vision of history as reaching a peak of military and economic development and “modernity” in the Greece of his own day. The chapter concludes by exploring the ways in which Thucydides’ influential model of Greek history fails to do justice to the historical realities of archaic Greece.

Although Thucydides does not shed light on the reasons and the historical facts relating to his departure from Athens, he is certainly far clearer on the effects that this event had on his work. He explicitly recognizes that the condition of exile offered him the rather unique possibility to observe the conflict from the Peloponnesian side as well and to follow the course of events without being distracted by troubles or other activities (καθ' ἡσυχίαν). In this study I emit the hypothesis that in 5.26 Thucydides makes an indirect allusion to the fact that a life of quietude, which liberates the eminent thinker from engagement in political life, is the path leading to intellectual production. This reading can help us recognize the intellectual affinities between Thucydides and the Athenian thinkers of the end of the fifth century BC and more particularly with Socrates's circle.
