This article explores the rise and fall of the Hindi literary film, circa 1969-1995. I discuss three hybrid genres that emerged from collaborations between modern Hindi writers and Indian New Wave filmmakers: lighthearted, middlebrow comedies about urban life; an avant-garde cinema characterized by a mofussil modernism; and an activist cinema concurrent with the Indian human rights movement. The article concludes by identifying the factors that pushed Hindi literature and cinema apart in the 1990s, with changes in state policies, the growth of private television channels, and the provincialization of Hindi literary culture.
This article examines the influence of filmi or Bollywood dance on dance practices in the UK. It locates film dance within the Bollywood genre, noting its recent acceptance as a new form of popular culture and its attractions for the younger generation of British Asians. The place of dance in the Hindi film is analysed and discussed briefly to contextualize the British position. Using evidence from fieldwork gathered in Leicester and London amongst dance teachers and students of South Asian dance, the paper questions notions of identity, authenticity, tradition and the changing nature of dance transmission as the Bollywood forms grow in popularity.

Shakespeare and the Construction of the Neopopular in Hrid Majharey2019 •
While Bengali theatre was quick to adapt Shakespeare on stage ever since its inception, Bengali films had shown little or no interest in this regard apart from two adaptations in the nineteen sixties and one at the turn of the twenty-first century. This paper tries to argue how contemporary Bengali cinema, especially, Ranjan Ghosh's "Hrid Majharey" in particular has tried to construct a new kind of popular by adapting Shakespeare which addresses both the exigencies of the mass as well as the class. By using the iconicity of Shakespeare on the one hand and the fandom of contemporary popular star actors on the other "Hrid Majharey" tries to straddle the conflicted priorities between the text and the star and thereby defining a new principle of commercial movie making and niche marketing.
