Abstract Poverty in Nigeria has been so pervasive despite several anti-poverty campaigns. Meanwhile, the dual crises of poverty and insecurity have contributed to the deepening conditions of the people in the midst of plenty. This paper which is descriptive and qualitative in nature relied on the Frustration-Aggression hypothesis for its theoretical orientation to explain the nexus between poverty and insecurity in Nigeria. Corruption, bad governance, lack of political will and policy inconsistencies in the country have affected the situations adversely. This paper concludes that related government and private agencies should actively engage the youths in productive jobs. More so, the nation’s economy should be diversified to include other sectors such as the agricultural sector which once accounted for about 61% of the country’s export in the 1960s. The paper recommends that justice and equity should be a cognate principle in all facets of national life. More so, the issues that have given rise to the security threats should be addressed holistically and government should go beyond lip-service in its poverty reduction campaign to implement existing policies that would enhance and proffer permanent solutions to insecurity and poverty problems in Nigeria.

PurposeIn Nigeria, knowledge about prostate cancer (PCa) is poor, so are the availability, accessibility, and utilization of PCa screening services. Poor knowledge increases the burden of disease, this is more so in rural settings. PCa, being gender-specific, has underlying cultural connotations. There is a dearth of evidence on the rural-cultural understanding of PCa onset. The study examined community stakeholders’ knowledge, risk perception, as well as the perceived barriers to seeking PCa screening. Rosenstock’s Health Belief Model provided the theoretical framing for the study.MethodsThe study design was descriptive and a cross-sectional approach to the social constructionist ideas of the qualitative tradition was adopted. There were twenty-one interviews with purposively selected community stakeholders; Fourteen key informant (traditional healers and medical doctors) interviews and seven In-depth Interviews (traditional leaders) held in the Ijebu culture cluster of Ogun State, Nigeria. Narratives were analyzed based on the following theoretical themes: knowledge, risk perception, and perceived barriers to PCa screening. These themes derived their structures from content-analyzed findings.ResultsResults show that traditional healers and leaders have limited scientific knowledge of PCa etiology. Folk beliefs form the basis of PCa knowledge among most stakeholders. However, all stakeholders consider PCa a threat to men. The cultural sense of ‘maleness’ and access to appropriate information about PCa are essential approaches to establishing perceived threat/susceptibility. Cancer health education and distance of screening facilities are primary barriers to seeking screening.ConclusionStakeholders’ knowledge of PCa and PCa screening should be improved by educating them and developing integrative community engagement strategies.

Background: An important aspect of sexual health is the ability to take a sexual history. Previous studies have shown that most medical students believed that sexual history taking is an important skill for future practice. Still, a majority reported inadequate, inconsistent or no training in this area. Objectives: To assess the attitudes of final year medical students on sexual history taking and perceptions of the training they received in medical schoolDesign: A cross-sectional study using an online surveyParticipants: Consented and conveniently sampled 100 final year medical students. Results: The overall response rate was 74.6%, and the mean age of the respondents was 24.1±2.9 years. The majority (97%) of the students believed it is important for doctors to know how to take a sexual history. Still, only 31% admitted to finding it easy, with 57% of the students admitted to being comfortable taking a sexual history from adult patients. While 70% had exposure on simulated patients, ...

Background: Unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortion is a global health issue and can be prevented through the use of contraceptive were sexual abstinence is impracticable. Unsafe sexual practices have drastic consequences on sexual and reproductive health and contributes immensely to maternal mortality. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine how level of knowledge and behavioural skill predicts contraceptive-use among female undergraduates in a selected university in Ogun state, Nigeria. Methodology: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among 241 female undergraduates using a validated interviewer administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Logistic regression analysis was used to determine which construct best predicts contraceptive-use using SPSS version 24.0. Results: Study revealed level of knowledge of respondents was 6.56 ± 1.85 with a prevalence score of 54.6%, mean score for behavioural skill was 6.50 ± 4.44 with a prevalence score of 27.1% and mean score for contraceptive-use was 2.68 ± 1.92 with a prevalence score of 38.28%. Behavioural skill was significantly associated with contraceptive-use (R= 0.400; R 2 =0.16; p=0.00) hence a better predictor of contraceptive-use. Conclusion: Findings from this study shows there is need for sensitization and empowerment of women with the aim of increasing their behavioural skill as knowledge alone is not sufficient in increasing the use of contraceptives where sexual abstinence is impracticable.
