2010, Oral Surgery
Alveolar crest expansion is a surgical approach used to remedy width defects and represents a predictable alternative procedure to guided tissue regeneration and autologous onlay grafts. Clinical and experimental results underscore the benefits of non‐mechanical implant bed preparation in bones with very low density. We report two clinical cases in which crest expansion was conducted in two stages: corticotomies in alveolar crest and then, after a 28‐day interval, crest expansion and implant placement, permitting revascularisation of the buccal cortical bone.

The BIP, with scientific coordinator Dr Xenia Charalambidou, will be held in Cyprus (Nicosia, Kornos village and Agios Demetrios village) from July 8 to July 16, 2024. The objective of this BIP is twofold. First, it seeks to provide a fully immersive experience of dynamic pottery cultures from apprenticeship through to vessel use and also in material science analyses. Secondly, it aims to give students the requisite skills, in consultation with potting elders, to apply this knowledge to explore how multistage hand-built pots were made and used in the past. In this BIP, the archives of ethnoarchaeologist Dr Gloria London, who has documented the Cypriot female potters since 1986, serve as a nucleus from which one can thoroughly document the dynamic context of their practices. The BIP is coordinated by the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), and the following Universities from Greece and Poland are the members of the consortium: University of Crete, University of Thessaly, University of the Aegean, University of the Peloponnese, University of Patras, University of Warsaw. In addition to Dr Xenia Charalambidou (OUC), Dr Gloria London and Beatrice McLoughlin (the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens), academics and researchers from the University of Cyprus, and the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC) of The Cyprus Institute are collaborating as guest instructors. Female potters in Cyprus will be contributing to the instruction of the BIP with workshops that will be provided to all participating students. Blended Intensive Programmes are funded in the context of the Erasmus+ Programme, and are short, intensive programmes that use innovative ways of learning and teaching, including the use of online cooperation. By enabling new and more flexible mobility formats that combine physical mobility with a virtual part, BIPs aim at reaching all types of students from all backgrounds, study fields and cycles. Το Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (ΑΠΚΥ) διοργανώνει το καινοτόμο Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) με τίτλο: «Cyprus Experimental Field School (CEF): From Cultural Heritage to Materials Science – The Female Potters of Cyprus», στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος κινητικότητας Erasmus+. Μαζί με τις Δρα Ξένια Χαραλαμπίδου (ΑΠΚΥ), Dr Gloria London και Beatrice McLoughlin (Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens), που διεξάγουν και συντονίζουν τα εργαστήρια και τις διαλέξεις, εγνωσμένου κύρους καθηγητές, καθηγήτριες και ερευνητές από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου και το Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC) του The Cyprus Institute θα συμμετάσχουν στο BIP με διαλέξεις και ξεναγήσεις..

2021. Conversaciones sobre Asiriología y enseñanza. Europa y América Latina: Internacionalizar, cooperar, descentralizarIn 2019 F. Luciani and L. Rovira (Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Santa Fe, Argentina), S. Chávez (Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile), and C. Gonçalves (Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil) have been involved in a number of teaching projects based on the academic stay of A. Bramanti (at that time researcher of the Université de Genève) at several Latin American universities. The authors of these pages present here some of the reflections and thoughts originated from these experiences. Assyriology is the field devoted to the reconstruction of the three millennia of history of the Ancient Near East through the study of the cuneiform sources. It was first conceived as an independent field of study in the middle of the 19th century in Europe and from there it spread to the United States. Many other countries in the world eventually developed their own traditions of study. Nevertheless, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, and United States still play a significant role in the field and keep attracting students, researchers, research projects, and funding. Meanwhile, Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, and Chile are slowly progressing in the development of their own traditions in Assyriology, using the exchange with international teachers and researchers as a tool. Until last year, such exchange has involved traditional face-to-face teaching. Starting from 2020 distance learning have been integrated in the exchange programs.

Fishing is an important and renewable natural resource base for many developing countries, providing jobs, hard currency, and government revenue. Aquaculture is an alternative method of achieving food security and poverty reduction in Ethiopia, but its status is less developed. Fish is an important food for Ethiopia's national nutrition strategy, as it is high in vitamin B12, calcium, iron, zinc, fatty acids, and animal protein. Fish meat is comparable to that of cattle, pig, lamb sheep, and poultry, and provides an excellent source of protein for human diet. The fisheries sector in Ethiopia is a good way to create job opportunities for rural, pre-urban, and urban unemployed and under-employed people. Recreational fishing has been popular in Ethiopia since the 1970s, with the introduction of two species of fish, Brown trout and Rainbow trout, from Kenya to the rivers of the Bale National Park. Traditional fishing methods and equipment are to blame for the low level of fish output and productivity. Governments are tightening controls on fishing vessels, activities, fish transit, and fish trade to combat illicit fishing and better manage their fishery resources. Overfishing is a major issue in Ethiopia, threatening the sustainability of the fisheries resource. Fish diseases are also a problem, reducing fish production and leading to mass mortalities. Fishery management is an integrated process of information gathering, analysis, planning, decision-making, resource allocation, and formulation and enforcement of fishery regulations. Postgraduate programs in fisheries and aquaculture are available at universities and technical institutions. To preserve and improve the advantages of the catch fishery, organizations should encourage awareness of fish welfare and productivity, identify and control threats, encourage indigenous investors to invest in scientifically supported and technologically advanced aquaculture, and conduct further studies on fish production and lake fishery management.
