Visual Anthropology

Guiding and transforming our creative practices, this paper argues for a critical investigation of the techno‐material affordances at play in doing visual research with digital media. It interrogates how software and skill might interact to mediate creative engagements with digital materialities. Drawing on two ethnographic case studies of and with the Korsakow System – an authoring system for creating generative multiple links between media assets – I show how software combined with other imaging technologies can (re‐)focus attention and action towards the intangible workings of digital code. Three exercises will demonstrate how a skilled mediation with relational media systems challenges and complements ethnographic filmmaking through the adoption of iterative software and design methodologies. Rather than gaining control over code, the aim is to gain control over the loss of it in the field and in front of the screen. In the context of an advancing digital visual ethnography, such a skilled mediation affords an experiential and responsive mode of knowledge production sensitising us to the complexly layered affordances and constraints of digital materialities and the dynamic density of relations in which they are entangled.

¿Cuánto puede contribuir el estudio de las imágenes y representaciones, ya sea como arte, ritos o simulacros, a comprender relaciones de poder y de agencia? Ésta es la pregunta que replantea el conjunto de estudios etnográficos en Calabria y Lombardía seguidos durante décadas por Francesco Faeta. Su prolija descripción etnográfica se potencia, una y otra vez, con revisiones de la antropología religiosa de Ernesto de Martino y sus herederos, y en diálogo con Arjun Appadurai, Georges Didi-Huberman y Alfred Gell, entre otros. Genera, así, una mirada de densidad histórica y novedosa reinterpretación contemporánea de lo sagrado y lo local, en intercambio con lo nacional y global, que va más allá de la iluminación rigurosa de las culturas del sur de Europa. Una obra que sitúa en el siglo XXI el significativo aporte crítico del pensamiento postgramsciano en el trabajo científico latinoamericano.

"Why Are Our Pictures Puzzles?" is an attempt to understand why scholars have begun writing at such tremendous length on individual pictures. Before the 20th c., one of the longest texts on a single painting was Vasari's description of Leonardo's "Last Supper." In the last forty years it has become common for historians to write entire books on individual artworks.

Why have we started experiencing images as so complex? Why do they seem to us like puzzles, waiting to be solved? Why doesn't it concern us that previous generations did not think of writing at such length?

This book also has a couple of chapters on what I consider to be psychotic behavior about images: compulsive sighting of supposedly hidden images, and a crazy art historical book about a painting written by Dalí. So I have tagged the book with psychoanalytic terms.

The book itself is still in print and in copyright, but I found a full pdf of this on the internet (for example on scribd), so I decided to post it on here on academia.edu, where at least it can have the correct context and links.

Qu'est-ce qu'une image ? La multiplication proliférante des images semble bien – et c'est là son paradoxe – inversement proportionnelle à notre faculté de dire ce qu'est réellement une image. Si notre interaction quotidienne avec les écrans a fait disparaître certaines peurs archaïques quant au pouvoir perturbateur des images, cette normalisation des rapports fait elle-même écran à une confrontation réelle avec l'efficace des images.
Prenant acte du fait que l'image n'est pas structurée comme un langage, cet ouvrage se fait le témoin des débats actuels autour des logiques imaginales, notamment les Bildwissenschaften allemandes ainsi que les visual studies aux Etats-Unis. Que ce soit à partir d'une perspective contemporaine ou encore depuis une position délibérément anachronique, les différents essais forment ensemble un arsenal conceptuel permettant d'affronter de façon nouvelle la question de l'image et de son efficace.

Der Begriff des Interface kategorisiert die Ausprägungsstufen einer kommunikationsstabilisierenden Schnittstelle als Interaktionsmechanismus, wobei die Interaktion von maschinellen Komponenten (Hardware, Software) sowie die vielfältigen Interaktionen zwischen UserIn und Maschine zur Geltung gebracht werden.

RESUMEN
La relación interna entre filosofía, literatura y arte permite examinar con propiedad qué significan la pluralidad y complejidad en los usos de la razón. Posibilita la aproximación a esos usos y figuras desde un ángulo privilegiado. El interés por lo literario y artístico no tendría por qué significar un apresurado abandono del modelo discursivo y analítico -que es característico de la filosofía-, sino más bien el acceso a un punto de vista más completo, un nuevo método reflexivo, otro límite crítico. Esta perspectiva facilita la puesta al día de las tesis modernas sobre la filosofía como emancipación, esto es, como su salida de la minoría de edad.
Espacios ficcionales, campos de proyección de la experiencia, métodos y perspectivas trasdisciplinarias constituyen los distintos niveles a través de los cuales se trata de definir un nexo complejo entre discursos. La ficción como conocimiento, subjetividad y texto, así como la relación entre mundo y lenguaje pretenden acotar algunas dimensiones de esa relación.
A través de la literatura llegamos a estar familiarizados con situaciones, sentimientos, formas de vida, obteniendo así una mirada desde dentro -epistemológicamente empática-. Cada nueva visión del mundo constituye un nuevo tipo de conocimiento, un conocimiento que puede incluir aspectos cognitivos y emotivos y que demandará, probablemente, algún tipo de lógica paraconsistente. De modo que a la par que por nuestras narrativas creamos o descubrimos mundos (dependiendo del estatuto ontológico otorgado a la ficción) también establecemos o desentrañamos la legislación lógica, según la cual tal curso de sucesos o tal tipo de entidades son o no admisibles al interior de este particular mundo posible.
Precisamente, es en la constante re-creación de sus objetos, práctica que surge en una comunidad de problemas -un espacio de representación colectiva- el espacio en que se da la ciencia. Es, precisamente, en una particular forma de hablar y de referirse a objetos, creándolos con el habla, el que funda a la medicina -por ejemplo- como cuerpo autónomo de conocimientos, vale decir como ciencia de primer orden. Las disciplinas, pues, en tanto discursos, están, literalmente, constituidas por él. Por ello es necesario estudiar el discurso científico en tanto que discurso, hay que reflexionar sobre sus orígenes y modo de constitución, hay que aceptar que no es sólo un producto sino una fuerza productiva. La realidad es una narrativa exitosa. Es aquello que se hace hablando. Las comunidades científicas son comunidades de problemas y, sobre todo, de retóricas, reconstrucciones de objetos que sólo existen en tanto se habla de ellos de una determinada manera,
Hasta los mundos narrativos más imposibles tienen como fondo lo que es posible en el mundo que concebimos como real. Las entidades y situaciones que no son explícitamente nombradas y descritas como diferentes del mundo real son entendidas a partir de las leyes que aplicamos a la comprensión del mundo real.
Así, pues, la narración de ficción construye un modelo análogo del universo real, una proyección...lo que permite conocer la estructura y los procesos internos de la realidad y manipularla cognitivamente. Se otorga así un valor cognoscitivo a la ficción, de modo tal que todas las posibles connotaciones, no expresadas directamente por el texto, sino -más bien- mostradas implícitamente o implicadas contextualmente en lo allí dicho, iluminan aspectos de la realidad que sin estas extrapolaciones ficcionales permanecerían en penumbras.
La perspectiva crítica -propia de la filosofía- puede hallarse así implícita en escritos de ficción, de la misma manera como las teorías filosóficas pueden aceptar como suyos a los argumentos procedentes del discurso literario. La reflexión filosófica se articula, pues, desde distintos ámbitos y modalidades discursivas.

The burial photograph taken at a German Cemetery on the 4 April 1944 is of Flight Sergeant Jones DFM’s funeral. His daughter Gill Sarsby was born one month after this event so they never met. Gill has always mourned not knowing her father, and only having a small amount of material culture linking them, the objects have an elevated importance. The artefact investigated in this study is the burial photograph of Flight Sergeant Jones. This precious object is deciphered using the interdisciplinary approach of Modern Conflict Archaeology, by which the photograph becomes a conduit for discovery. But also the main informant Gill is a focus of investigation to better understand the relationships between loss, material culture, memorialisation and memory. Through material culture research, engagement with landscape, memory and imagination, it will be shown an individual who had never known her father was able to feel an emotional connection with him and a gap between generations created by twentieth century conflict was bridged.

In the early twentieth century, the Dutch colonial government, working with several private entities operating in the Netherlands East Indies, significantly increased propagandistic efforts promoting solidarity toward their colony. As part of these initiatives, a new organization, called the Colonial Institute, hired soldier-turned-filmmaker J. C. Lamster to make several short films between 1912–13. His films documented various government infrastructural programs, as well as its efforts to promote art and culture. Despite having bequeathed a prolific collection—Lamster made about fifty-five films by himself—he remains relatively unknown. It was only as recently as 2010 that a comprehensive Dutch-language biography was published. Given that Lamster's films merit further scrutiny, this article has two objectives: to expound the historical and social circumstances in which these films were created, and to impress upon the reader that, despite falling under that broad, often dull, classification of “propaganda,” some of Lamster's short movies deserve a legitimate place in the canon of early ethnographic film in Indonesia.

Aunque la Guerra del Pacifico terminó en 1883, Bolivianos, Peruanos, y Chilenos siguen disputando las fronteras trazadas en su final. Mientras retos se disputan en el Corte Internacional de Justicia en La Haya, los comentarios del publico y los discursos sobre estas fronteras y su significado suceden en diversas esferas públicas. Estas esferas públicas y media han cambiado radicalmente en los 132 años desde cuando se establecieron las fronteras, y hoy en día las redes sociales es un sitio clave donde Bolivianos y Chilenos de la región norte expresan las memorias (colectivamente imaginado) de formaciones políticas del pasado y sus sentimientos personales sobre el disputo en el contexto de la política actual. Esta presentación analiza texto y los memes que combinan imagines con texto posteados en Facebook por Chilenos del norte y Bolivianos, junto con los comentarios de sus amigos y conocidos. Mientras Bolivianos apelan a un sentimiento de soberanía histórica, y los Chilenos se burlan de la falta de mar de Bolivia como indicador de subdesarrollo, ambos grupos usan el humor para abordar el tema, a menudo en formas despolitizado. Considerando las redes sociales como un sitio clave donde se expresa la memoria, a pesar del reciente desarrollo de este medio, también la presentación abre conversaciones sobre como perdura la memoria mientras los portajes en donde está expresada siempre cambian, y el uso de humor en memorias de conflictos como una manera para despolitizar los temas profundamente divisivas.

En août 1992, le rituel d'intronisation du nouvel hogon d'Arou avait lieu1. Etalé sur plusieurs semaines le rituel consiste, à consacrer un descendant de la tribu des Arou comme représentant du dieu Amma et comme responsable de la prospérité et du maintien de l'ordre sur terre.
Quelles que soient les traductions proposées par les ethnologues2, pour définir le statut du hogon: prêtre, haut dignitaire, prince, chef sacré, nombre d’études s'accordent sur l'étendue de ses pouvoirs. Il s’agit, en effet, d’une charge qui confère au hogon d’Arou de lourdes responsabilités concernant entre autre la prospérité du territoire, tant du point de vue des récoltes- maîtrise de la pluie, protection contre les invasions de prédateurs- que du point de vue de sa population- protection contre les épidémies et expansion des naissances. Mais, le prestige de cette charge, la reconnaissance publique générale qui y est attachée n’entraîne pas une accumulation de richesses ou la possession de biens à valeur marchande.

Langer suggests an explanatory model for the ritual object in the context of compulsion neuroses and totem theory.

В статье на основании текстовых и визуальных архивных документов исследуются особенности и информативные качества феномена советс-кого этнографического кино, практически не изученного ни в этнографии, ни в киноведении. Анализируя показательный опыт первопроходцев направления этнокино в СССР режиссера А. А. Литвинова и исследова-теля В. К. Арсеньева, автор прослеживает эффективную методологию их научно-кинематографического творчества: от стадии написания сце-нарных эскизов на основе научных текстов, через длительные полевые киноэкспедиции до редактирования итоговых киноработ при участии научного консультанта. Выбор хронологических рамок исследования обосновывается тем, что рубеж 1920-х-1930-х гг.-время развития направления этнографического кино в Советском Союзе, характеризовав-шееся не только количественным, но и качественным развитием. За этот период была создана панорама фильмов этнографического содержания о различных народностях многонациональной страны Советов. И наиболее значительные из данных киноработ создавались при участии професси-ональных ученых. В частности, результатом сотворчества А. А. Литви-нова и В. К. Арсеньева стала серия этнографических киноработ об этни-ческих сообществах Приморья (удэгейцы) и Камчатки (коряки, ламуты), заслуживших признание и широкого зрителя, и научной аудитории. Эти кинодокументы являются одними из первых визуальных свидетельств по этнографии народов Дальнего Востока. С учетом этно-киноведческого ракурса в статье сделаны выводы: этнографическое кино при соо-ветствующем комплексном подходе представляет собой особую форму исследовательского познания; итоговый фильм, как «документ» своего времени, при должной аналитической критике является информативным историческим/этнографическим источником. Изучение малоисследованного пласта архивных этнографических фильмов является актуальным направлением для широкого спектра гуманитарных изысканий, и его результаты заслуживают введения в активный научный оборот. А опыт их создателей представляет ценный практический пример для деятельности современных этнокинематографистов.

The article draws on text and visual archival documents to study nature and informative value of Soviet ethnographic films. Ethnographic cinema is a phenomenon almost unstudied by both ethnography and cinematology. Analyzing an illustrative experience of film director A. A. Litvinov and researcher V. K. Arsenyev, who were at tip of the spear in Soviet ethnocinema, the author investigates effective methodology of their scientific and cinematographic work: from script based on scientific texts to lengthy ethnographic filming expeditions to editing of the films assisted by scientific advisors. The choice of the chronological framework rests on the fact that late 1920s-early 1930s was a time of growth for ethnographic filming in the Soviet Union, characterized by both quantity and quality of ethnographic films. It was a time when a panorama of ethnographic films about different peoples of the multinational Soviet country was created, in production of the most significant of these professional scientists were involved. A series of ethnographic films about ethnic groups of Primorye (the Udege), Kamchatka (the Koryaks, the Lamuts), and Chukotka (the Chukchi), a collaboration of A. A. Litvinov and V.K. Arsenyev, received recognition from the public, and also from the scientific community. These film documents are among first photovisual records on the ethnography of the peoples of the Far East. From the point of view of ethnographic cinematology, the article concludes that ethnographic films, if approached scientifically, become a form of research, film as a 'document' of the period providing historical and ethnographic data. Little-studied archival ethnographic films are a promising area of research, well deserving being included into the scholarship. Their cre-ators' experience is of practical interest for modern ethno-cinematographers. Numa rua deserta e caiada da Aldeia da Luz, um galo canta. Ouve-se a voz de Benjamim Pereira, por detrás da câmara :-Sr. Francisco, vamos esperar mais um bocadinho, é que ... querem filmar! Este olha a câmara e, para cima, na direcção do microfone. Ouve-se então o operador de som, Olivier Blanc:-Pronto! E, de novo, o Sr. Francisco:-Vocemecês é que sabem o que é que querem... Estamos instalados naquilo que antecede o momento da entrevista, da inquirição, o momento em que o antropólogo dá início a mais uma conversa cujas informações vai depois sistematizar, guardar, ligar com outras, eventualmente arquivar. O que no início é um comentário em off, uma indicação de Benjamim Pereira, começa aos poucos a ser uma presença que ganha corpo ao longo deste pequeno filme e em que, à medida que avançamos, vamos estando mais ao lado do etnólogo. Estas imagens não foram, no entanto, feitas com o intuito de mostrar, reflexivamente, o etnólogo em trabalho de campo. Nas primeiras cenas desta montagem, é apenas o acaso que faz com que Benjamim esteja presente. Ele é a personagem que não entra no filme, nem na pesquisa. Ao longo do tempo, fomos de vez em quando apontando a câmara e o microfone àquele que parecia ser o catalisador de tudo aquilo que acontecia no trabalho de campo da Aldeia da Luz. Com este conjunto de imagens e sons, pretendíamos, antes de mais, prestar uma homenagem ligada à partilha do trabalho, da pesquisa, das sociabilidades e das amizades durante o longo trabalho de campo na Aldeia da Luz. Para além da recolha visual para aquele que viria ser o arquivo das memórias da velha aldeia, resolvemos, algumas vezes, registar o processo de prospecção de objectos etnográficos que viriam a fazer parte do acervo do Museu da Luz. Neste pequeno filme, Benjamim, falando com a D. Faustina a partir de algumas peças que parecem estar guardadas para uma função a ser designada pelos seus netos, vai dizendo:-Isto é uma peça fantasticamente interessante... E ainda:-Isto era para o museu, o seu neto não tem lugar para isto, é no museu que tem que estar, este banco é lindíssimo, olha esta peça...sabe, é uma lição de design, a mão encaixa aqui, segura, é prodigioso, a gente está a ver o movimento.... Este libro recoge las conclusiones más significativas de una investigación que comenzó en 1993 examinado la pertinencia de incluir medios y técnicas audiovisuales en proyectos de investigación social, y que desde 1996 hasta el 2000 se articuló sobre una investigación sistemática acerca de cómo conceptualizamos ciertos modelos y supuestos culturales sobre el dominio pro- creativo y de qué forma los incorporamos a nuestro repertorio cultural de conocimiento y actitudes consuetudinarias, asu- miendo el valor de los productos audiovisuales (los textos audiovisuales) en tanto documentos etnográficos para la investi- gación y la docencia en Antropología Social y Cultural.

Le présent article étudie les dispositifs de certains romans graphiques à la lumière des concepts anthropologiques afin d’illustrer leur potentiel en tant qu’outil au service de la rencontre et de la contextualisation du regard de l’Étranger. Nous proposerons d’abord une brève mise en contexte théorique des mémoires graphiques, en plus de les confronter
à l’ethnographie classique et aux supports filmiques de l’anthropologie visuelle. Nous aborderons par la suite la production de savoir ethnographique ainsi que les mécanismes de représentation de la figure de l’Étranger à l’intérieur de deux documents articulés autour du témoignage, de l’observation participante et de la réflexivité : Maus: A Survivor’s Tale (1986 et 1991) d’Art Spiegelman et Palestine (2001) de Joe Sacco.

El presente artículo analiza algunas de las posibilidades teóricas y metodológicas que tiene un/a antropólogo/a audiovisual al trabajar en un archivo, en mi caso el Archivo Blomberg (Quito, Ecuador). Las siguientes reflexiones apuntan a relevar los sentidos que construyen los archivos en dos niveles: el contexto de producción y el contexto actual de las imágenes. Las dos variables para investigar ambos contextos son la materialidad de las imágenes (historia, disposición y circulación) y la representación de las mismas (intenciones, forma/contenido y miradas). La tarea del/la antropólogo/a audiovisual consiste en distinguir los usos y las representaciones de las imágenes en los diferentes contextos que atraviesan. Así es que en mi caso de estudio pude analizar cómo las ideas que había construido el explorador sueco Rolf Blomberg en los años '30 sobre Ecuador, todavía el Archivo Blomberg las sigue manteniendo.
