Spatial Design

An interdisciplinary design practice spanning the fields of spatial design, performance design and Indigenous studies, the work questions how Indigenous narratives sit in colonised spaces of theatre. As a theatrical design relating to the Aboriginal experiences of Country and contemporary Indigenous identities, it addresses themes such as Indigenous women’s worldviews, ongoing effects of colonisation, and intergenerational women’s business. Other influential practitioners in this field include Jacob Nash, head designer for Bangarra Dance Theatre.

The work includes set and costume design and construction for Winyanboga Yurringa, a play set in Yorta Yorta Country. Written and directed by Andrea James, it features six Aboriginal women camping on Country, reconnecting with the land and each other, and finding resilience and strength in doing so.

As a female Indigenous designer working with a primarily Indigenous cast and crew, the project challenges whether the enduring relationships Indigenous people have with Country can be designed into a colonised theatrical setting in both a culturally and aesthetically respectful way. Incorporating installation art and spatial design with Indigenous methodological approaches, the design features stylised shell shapes in abstracted sculptural forms, such as those that might be found in middens indicating thousands of years of Indigenous inhabitation to create the forest that surrounds the campground.

Staged at Carriageworks, 3-6 August 2016, travelling to Geelong Performing Arts Centre, 17-20 August 2016, the project was featured on ABC Radio and reviewed in Real Time Arts magazine. The essay shows the evolution of the design research of Gio Ponti,
artist, designer, architect, publisher, stage designer, founder, director
and publicist of the «Domus» magazines (1929) and «Lo Stile
nella casa e nell ’arredamento» (1941–1947). His creative work has
gas played a tremendous role in the Italian culture, it concernes the
most varied disciplines, interpreting the spirit of modernity with attention
to the social needs and education of a new taste and is linked
to Mediterranean culture.

Covered By Concrete is a spatial mapping project located on Wareamah (Cockatoo Island) in Sydney Harbour. The work addresses the relationship between the Aboriginal experience of Country, place and urbanisation.

The project considers the latent history of Aboriginal occupation hidden under the strata of urban Australia. It questions whether the spirit of a place can still be perceived regardless of the colonising or ‘smoothing over’ of the natural landscape. The installation investigates whether a space can be reclaimed, and Aboriginal culture reflected on contemporary identities. Additionally, it explores whether engagement with signage of a site, in this instance, Cockatoo Island, might bring understanding of obscured stories in order that non-Indigenous people might come to a new comprehension of a place. The creation of a spatial map of the island gives the opportunity for viewers to reconsider pre-colonial usage, narratives and knowledges. The use of concrete impressed with local native flora and then burnt out referencing traditional Indigenous fire practices offers a paradox; and a relationship to the name of the work.

On completion of the Underbelly Arts Festival, where the work was originally exhibited, the Trustees of Cockatoo Island expressed interest in amending the signage to incorporate Indigenous content, with ongoing discussions regarding permanent installation of the work on the island.

This chapter will further investigate the themes which were explored through the work, including mapping, urban Country and the reclamation of identity – not only of people but also of place.

This paper considers the discrepancies in the visual literacy of students prior to entering spatial design education at a public higher-educational institution. Because the school subjects Visual Arts and Engineering Graphics and Design provide feeder skills to visual literacy, students with exposure to these subjects tend to have higher visual literacy than
students who are unlikely to have received exposure to these subjects. This is problematic because Visual Arts and Engineering Graphics and Design are not on offer in all public South African schools.
As educators from a public higher-educational institution endeavouring to provide equitable learning opportunities, how do we, through spatial design education, relate to first-year students with an awareness of differences in student ’readiness’ impacted by schooling opportunities? What role can spatial design exercises play in alleviating these discrepancies while engaging all students in the first-year studio?
This paper focuses on first-year spatial design students and the design exercises In your Hands and Self-Portrait. These introductory design briefs focus on the development of students’ three-dimensional spatial design skills with awareness of the impact of students’ school subjects on studio outputs. In your Hands requires the creation of a support with wire for stone using stone, wire and pliers. Thereafter follows a group discussion, reflection and iteration. Self-Portrait requires the creation of a three-dimensional self-portrait of the inner and outer being using wire and thereafter, a projected shadow drawing of the portrait using light while drawing with graphite on paper. A selection of projects conducted by first-year spatial design students of architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture in 2017 at the Department of Architecture, University of Pretoria has been documented. With the focus of spatial design education in the first-year studio being on the development of three-dimensional design skills, differences in students’ schooling backgrounds played a reduced role in impacting project outcomes. The introduction of alternative media, stone and wire, to which most students had limited exposure, provides an even playing field. Communalism as a means of learning together was explored through group discussion and iteration of the exercise, providing students an opportunity for self-review and improvement in their approach. Self-Portrait allows a reflection of self-understanding in a threedimensional format. The shadow projection reinforce the role of two-dimensional drawings as representational of three-dimensional spatial products as a key skill to spatial design practice which redefines the two-dimensional drawing from being an artistic output to becoming a representational image. The two exercises provide a relevant discussion as introductory exercises focusing on skills development in the spatial design fields through the three-dimensional. This approach allows a fairer learning opportunity for students regardless of their school subjects, which could have enhanced their skills in visual literacy. This is a worthwhile case study for spatial design educators in the context of the call for decolonised education.

It is known that landscape has a detrimental effect on the human psychology but to what extent it has not been figured out. The paper focuses on the study of the impact of green space and its effects on human psychology. It emphasizes on the aspects that are effected by incorporating green architecture inside the interior space and to what extent. The paper also deals with the various types of interior landscaping and how it can be integrated within a structure to enhance the spatial experience and create a positive impact on human behavior. The paper concludes with a set of design guidelines that will be useful in designing spaces where interior landscaping is an integral part of spatial design.

Digital-physical realities are part of our daily spatial experiences, interacting seamlessly to allow multiple streams of information to converge upon us. The Actual acts as a place of affected engagement within our surrounding environment, which can interact with the virtuality of our everyday life. Digital-physical experiences happen within these environments and are affected by our identity, corporeal body and virtual body allowing us to question the possibilities and outcomes of the world we inhabit.

How we interact with these digital-physical spatial encounters is where my research lies; using technological interventions including gaming, second life, screens and interfaces I look to expand on the affective qualities these environments hold. While also exploring the language we use to describe the space we inhabit when presented with our identities within the shared digital-physical space or convergence.

The educational project involving the design of a school yard using Google SketchUp, presented in this paper, was originally designed and implemented by undergraduate students at the Department of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) in the context of their studies in the “Teaching Geography with ICT” course. The aim of the project was to create awareness of spaces and their functions, and to redesign those spaces using Google Sketch up according to criteria relating both to the environment and the needs of pupils and their education. The assessment of this initiative, carried out by the undergraduate students during the pilot study showed that there is a distinct need for connecting real spaces with technology and for familiarity with the tools that help pupils visualise the space and that Google SketchUp could be an effective tool that is easily applied to this project and can enrich geography lessons for pupils in upper primary and low...

The aim of the research is to analyse the contribution of spatial design elements in movies and how they enrich a movie. It is aimed to examine how silent narrators, such as music, furniture, space, color, and light enrich the subtext of the movie.  During the study, firstly, the concepts of "movie space" and "architectural space" are examined. The role, contribution and potential of the film space and cinema techniques in creating architectural spaces have been studied through sample films. The concept of space is an indispensable element in cinema, but its contribution to the story is not the same in all films. Place; It takes place in the cinema by creating a background, as a complementary element  or as the main element of the film.

In Turkey, the Housing Development Administration (HDA/Toplu Konut İdaresi-TOKİ) became a major public actor in the housing market in the 2000s by undertaking nearly ten per cent of the annual national housing production. Going forward, HDA plans to further increase its rate of housing in the coming years with an even wider scale of urban transformation across the country in line with central policies. To date, the implementation strategy for public mass-housing has had an overall prescription, mainly based on the quickest and cheapest means of mass production. However, shortcuts taken to reduce the costs have so far bypassed critical architectural and planning priorities, resulting in friction among different actors and further socioeconomic problems. This study reviews the background of public mass housing and urban transformation attempts in Turkey, concentrating on research and implementation experience of HDA in the 1990s and 2000s with a historical perspective. Taking a closer look at the basic spatial decision-making (SDM) mechanism behind its social housing provision and briefly discussing the controversies of urban transformations it participated in, the study addresses the common shortfalls of the current public housing practice in the light of the existing research and experience in the country. The study calls for the re-establishment of a comprehensive research basis independent from bureaucratic actors to ground the practice on and help sustain the built environment.

New economic and industrial developments in the post-Industrial era have caused the construction and mechanical infrastructure of the Industrial Revolution to lose functionality, a trend especially apparent in industrial facilities in major European industrial centers after the 1950s. Industrial remains, which include conventional structures and spaces that characterize cities, towns and regions as well as buildings, landscapes, industrial zones and precincts, occupy an important section of our built environment and landscape – as apparent from their wide scope. All these industrial legacies which have lost their original purpose and remain inert in cities carry great potential for adaptive reuse. The purpose of this study is to draw attention to adaptive reuse as part of architectural design and to evaluate modern repurposing applications of industrial constructs in regards to heritage value, the reasons and benefits of transformation and alteration methods in light of the information gathered via literature research with the aim of obtaining data for use in repurposing applications of industrial constructs – an area that is relatively dormant in our country.  Key Words: Adaptive Reuse; Industrial Structures; Industrial Buildings; Architectural Design; Spatial Design

Most people spend most of their times within the built environment. These man-made spaces are a major part of our lives. The design elements provided by these built environments impact human well-being. One of the key senses that effects human well-being is ‘visual comfort’ and one of the major aspects of visual comfort is ‘colour’.
Colour is a crucial design element that directly impacts human physical behavior and mood especially within a built environment. If this critical design element is not selected in a professional manner, then it can have negative effects on the user in terms of physical well-being. Colour defines the atmosphere of the interior space and it can change the nature of environments. Environments that need special colour consideration are healthcare facilities. Healing spaces are vital environments that treat human well-being and it is a substantial responsibility to consider the key design element of colour when making design decisions.
The aim of this research is to investigate the physiological effect of patient colour perception in health care facilities. This paper aims to answer the question that arises from this topic; can colour benefit patient well-being? To gain knowledge of how patients are impacted by colour, a combination of review of literature and of experimental studies (experiments in a controlled environments) is utilized. By following this method, this research then reveals which colours have positive effect on patient’s well-being.
Literature review covers case studies, previous experimental studies and surveys. Since there is limited experimental research on colour perception within healing environments, this research paper considers only a handful of experimental studies that specifically focus on patient colour preference and the physiological effects of colour within patient rooms in healthcare facilities; a designed/controlled environment where authors survey and test patient’s well-being under specific colours. Other experimental studies on other types of built environments investigating colour and its physiological effect on participants are also discussed. The reason behind reviewing other built environments is to understand which colours have arousal and calming effects so that this information can be interpreted for healthcare patient rooms. This method is achieved by providing qualitative analysis of quantitative and qualitative methods of study. After reviewing these case studies this research will then compare their results. Thus, the research will investigate the potentials, limitations, further research suggestions, strengths and weaknesses of previous research. While there are minimal colour considerations when making design decisions for patient rooms in healthcare facilities, most that are made are not based on scientific fact, quantitative or even qualitative research. Designers in the field need to understand the importance of colour, which can benefit human well-being when considered professionally.

Recently Technology has been introduced new solutions for Out-of-Home advertising through digital television screens connected wireless or wired in point of sale. we can find those screens are giving directions and instructions to the pedestrians to get to a place or get a specific product, the content of advertisement can be changed during the day using a console server by attaching a schedule to show the context across the network of different types of screens, where visual content of design can be changed as needed. Screens could be used for emergency announcements where target pedestrian are located. Designer considers tow aspects: Real-Time broadcasting for the content and the Spatial space, both are integrated contextually and coherent visually, and to consider the format of content if Static, Motion or interactive. The problem of the research is how to design a set of connected advertising screens which coexists with the spatial space, where the content can be changed based on a given data for pedestrians; since this is problem appears important squares in downtown. The research aims to achieve a visual strategy standard for visually responsive media of advertising for both of: Spatial space and Audiences’ behavior.

This paper explores the relationship between service design and the design of physical environments through the contributions received in “Experiencing and shaping” track at the “ServDes.2018 Proof of Concept” Conference. The main aim of the track is to examine how the systemic logic of service design and its peculiar focus on interactions influence the
shaping of spaces, while at the same time exploring how spatial design could shape places according to the different actions occurring within them, mainly due to services taking place there. Mutual influences relate both to the experiences the users could have in the spaces and in using services, and at the same time with the shapes of spaces where services happen.
Although the track topic deals with a barely explored aspect of service design, various contributions have framed an interesting panorama of thecurrent situation. The twelve articles selected have been gathered into three main clusters concerned with: framing a theoretical background, experimental educational activities and applied research.

The paper approaches the concept of transversality and the artistic action which restores to public space one of the multiple visions of the processes characterizing the culture of contemporary design. In particular, the paper concerns the Podio realized by the artist Alfredo Pirri, for the event 'Public space, art and identity: comparing international experiences' organized by the PDTA Department at the Valle theater in Rome. The paper starts introducing the various physical and symbolic meanings that the podium had in the history of architecture, changing shapes, design and arts: this structure represents, from antiquity to modernity, an element of connection with the context and mediation with the soil, but also an object of public and political communication. From the unitary base of the Etruscan-Italic temples, to the carved one of the Malatesta temple by Alberti in Rimini, to the rationalist conception of opaque material or air blocking, up to Lisickij’s lenina tribune, the function of the podium has always been to isolate and to symbolically elevate the architectural organism, as well as to celebrate the status and word of the leader. Pirri’s artwork offers a unique approach, according to which the podium becomes the frame of the word and a sort of listening instrument. In this sense, the theater is a public space in the sign of heterotopy and the artistic object is a communication device which can attribute new values and forms of interaction to the urban context.

Ο σχολικός χώρος στο ελληνικό σχολείο παρουσιάζει πολλά διαχρονικά dομολειτουργικά, νομοθετικά και οργανωτικά προβλήματα με αποτέλεσμα να έχει παγιωθεί στη συνείδηση των εκπαιδευτικών η άποψη ότι τίποτα δεν μπορεί να αλλάξει τη δεδομένη κατάσταση. Ωστόσο, παρά τις εγγενείς αυτές δυσκολίες, τα περιθώρια των παρεμβάσεων στους υπάρχοντες σχολικούς χώρους είναι ακόμα πολλά, αρκεί η σχολική κοινότητα στο σύνολό της (εκπαιδευτικοί, γονείς, υποστηρικτικοί θεσμοί) να αναλάβουν συντονισμένες και ενσυνείδητες προσπάθειες. Στην ερευνητική μας μελέτη παρουσιάζουμε συγκεκριμένες δράσεις αναμόρφωσης του σχολικού χώρου, που εξελίσσονται την τελευταία τετραετία σε σχολεία της 1ης Εκπαιδευτικής Περιφέρειας Α/θμιας Εκπαίδευσης του νομού Πιερίας με την πρωτοβουλία και την υποστήριξη του Σχολικού Συμβούλου (ερευνητή) της οικείας περιφέρειας. This article addresses the challenges to urban planning, which is a social activity that affects the development of urban communities and helps them to cope with the challenges posed by the global-local and real-virtual dialectic. The approach to planning is influenced by an emerging creativity and knowledge-sharing culture that has an inherent connection to global and digital transformations. Such a transformation is giving urban planning a new look, which is depicted in the concept of Urban Planning 2.0. In this article this paradigm shift is explained and illustrated with a special view to identifying the ways Web 2.0 tools can be utilised in urban planning. The fundamental question emerging in the critical evaluation of Urban Planning 2.0 is how citizen-oriented practices of Planning 2.0 relate to formal decision-making within the representative system of government and professionally and technocratically oriented planning practices of city governments. There is some evidence to suggest that the new Web 2.0 tools make the difference in open, inclusive and creative contexts, where their optimal deployment requires a paradigm shift in urban governance and planning.

The ‘open city’ has recently been theorised as the urban condition that best accommodates diversity, incorporates change, and fosters adaptation. In this respect, the open city can be framed as a complex system, the overall form of which cannot be predicted in advance as it is in a constant state of becoming. Although the open city,
as an emergent system, cannot be designed from the top down, it needs some direction as it can also spontaneously veer towards its decline and turn into a closed system. What, then, is the role of (spatial) design in setting the conditions for the emergence of the open city and in preventing its self-destruction? By presenting two case studies, the present paper attempts to frame a design approach that can direct emergent changes without trying to formally predetermine their outcome.

This thesis elaborates on a theoretical, epistemological and design research framework for the possibility of an operative synthesis of, on the one hand, climate-related risk management (primarily, flood exposure from multiple sources, i.e. sea level rise and coastal/tidal flooding, fluvial flooding and pluvial flooding) and, on the other, the planning and design of operational landscapes of material production, as a means for sustainable ecological development.
Contemporary practices of managing ecological, environmental and climatic risk rely heavily on a ‘mitigation’ approach, where the imperative is the restoration of a previous ‘natural’ order or the spatial planning of the next waves of development and urbanization according to the evaluation of the internal logics of natural processes. However, this line of thinking severely hinders the possibility of a creative and proactive reorganization of human processes of material production precisely because it presupposes a “nature-society rift” (Moore, 2014). Similarly, the negative externalities associated with the extensive and intensive operationalization of vast terrestrial terrains are viewed as singular phenomena to be addressed in situ and not as opportunities to fundamentally re-conceptualize contemporary planetary urbanization (Brenner, 2016).
The basis upon which this work is built, is that to properly address climate-related risk one has to, also, address unsustainable patterns of material production and the physical and functional organization of urbanization. Following the development of the concepts of “concentrated” and “extended urbanization” through the construction of gradients of “agglomeration” and “operational landscapes” (Brenner, 2014a, 2016; Katsikis, 2018; Moore, 2014) and in contrast to the predominant approach of placing the emphasis on the agglomeration side of these gradients, this thesis attempts the opposite: shifting the analytical centrality from agglomerations to the operational landscapes that sustain them, we are able to formulate an urbanization hypothesis that addresses the requirements of the latter not as externalities of the former (thus hindering the capacity of the framework to be adequately socio-ecologically sustainable) but as the fundamental elements of the planning and design of the urban fabric. It is, thus, suggested that an incorporation of biophysical processes and ecosystem functions, which are central to the performance of operational landscapes, within the urbanized landscape would, at the same time, offer climate-related performance.
Assuming, therefore, that this act is an act of construction of the urban landscape and, even further, it partakes in its economic activities, this work reformulates Lefebvre’s (2003) opening statement in “The Urban Revolution” as following: ‘the urban has been completely operationalized’, and attempts to elaborate on the coming-into-being of this reality: ‘the project of the cultivation of the urban’.
As such, the objective of this thesis is to develop a framework for a design exercise that could inform a potential urban and territorial project. The design research proposal elaborated here is one that seeks to discuss the possibility that “agglomeration landscapes” become hybridized with “operational landscapes” (Katsikis, 2018). By that I mean that contemporary cities and urban regions renounce their sole correspondence with the secondary and tertiary sectors of economy and, in turn, take on the role of encompassing primary (i.e. material) production as well. In other words, this work assumes that there is a possibility that the various productive hinterlands of the planet be diffused within and throughout the urbanized landscapes that they sustain. By concurring with Moore (2014) that operational landscapes represent, essentially, the way that humanity interacts with nature, I evoke Foster (2000) to propose the possibility of retrofitting material production within the economies of agglomerations and, thus, operationalizing the urban.

The complex systems of the cities prove that in the urban discourse, knowledge is inseparable from action. As the city of Skopje struggles to obtain a certain level of social sustainability, the battle of functionalism within its patterns begins to deteriorate. The phenomenon of the recent events in the urbanization of Skopje, which my paper refers to, generates a different opinion in studying urban design. Today Skopje represents on one hand a training ground for future urban planners, and on the other a museum of the Metabolist's skeletons frozen in time and neglected by its owner. The political issues that turned the general situation around from the beginnings of the '80 were an unpredicted future to the developed scenario of the United Nations and the invited competition of the superstars in 1965. It has come to a turning point that created some kind of socio-urban amnesia that still dwells deep into the social sub consciousness. The quest for knowledge in the past decades has turned to be a total failure. New histories have been trying to rewrite the factual city and as a result many non-places started squatting around. The latent information within the physical matrix of the urb is holding quiescent knowledge about certain evolutional pathways of a city and its hidden political agendas. Identifying and uncovering this information is crucial at this point in time. The city's urban tissue is at stake and as it is might lead to an irreparable delusional future.

BOOK REVIEW AND LINK TO FREE DOWNLOAD. This collection of essays on the transdisciplinary problematic of space represents an important step forward in the production and exchange of knowledge across a number of different arts, humanities, and social and hard sciences. The editors-Romana Bošković, Slađana Milićević and Miljana Zeković-have ventured outside their disciplinary comfort zone of architecture to enter that difficult yet rewarding territory where conversations can be had with people who view space in markedly different ways, who employ unfamiliar research methodologies, and yet share with one another significant overlaps of concern. What makes this step so worthwhile taking is that it offers a rich variety of perspectives on questions affecting not only academic thought and practice but also everyday life beyond the university. By leading us into that uncertain 'in-between,' where we have to navigate disciplinary tensions, Bošković, Milićević and Zeković enable us to identify commonalities of approach and begin to see how and why different understandings and deployments of space exist. Taken all together, the proceedings address three linked themes: spatial design (itself a burgeoning multidisciplinary field), theoretical perspective and technological approach. In truth, however, the wealth of overlap between theoretical, artistic, technical and contextual modes (as well as between disciplines) is testament to the integrative ethos that characterises research at the University of Novi Sad's Department of Architecture and Urbanism, Faculty of Technical Sciences...

Ridgeland Connect is a strategic plan for the Ridgeland Avenue corridor in Berwyn, Illinois, that assesses the comprehensive existing conditions with innovative, sustainable, and inclusive spatial design techniques and best practices for a graduate course at the University of Illinois - Chicago.

The role of space in the 21st century and in the society we would like to regard as “knowledge-based” is one of the essential questions, to which different fields of knowledge are trying to answer. Museum clusters are a spatial phenomenon very present in contemporary cities, but not as much in contemporary research. Yet, in these spaces within and between museums is the place “in-between disciplines” where all the activities and ideas of spatial design and the changes in the approach to reading, understanding and designing of space are manifested. This article points to the intertwining of different spatial disciplines in radical projects related to museum and other cultural clusters, through which they become a manifesto of spatial design, demonstrating the ultimate role of public space - education.

Musical improvisation is a complex field of the study of creativity wherein the musician - according to jazz pianist Herbie Hancock - improvises by 'starting with nothing' and 'ending up with something'. We explore a 'Musico-Spatial Design' creative practice design research project that uses parametric spatial design tools to research musical improvisation, then takes knowledge gained from this process to illuminate aspects of improvisation within parametric spatial design processes. Our investigation of musical and parametric spatial design improvisation provides insights into how both novices and experts engage in improvisation and how they don't really 'start with nothing' but bring into the design conversation a varying range of referents to inform designerly intent.

Owners shape the interior spaces of their houses to support their daily needs. In Saudi Arabia owners’ decisions are influenced by social needs and rules. These social rules, in traditional houses, require multiple spaces that share the same function yet each target specific users. The spaces are mainly gender oriented, and reflect different sides of the owners’ needs. This paper focuses on one of these personal needs: privacy. The paper looks at the meaning of privacy and its importance inside contemporary Saudi houses. Privacy, as an issue, is international and affects people globally. The research proposes a dialogue between communication design and exhibition design, in the atmospheric and aesthetic dimension, with emphasis on the translation of content into a system for the understanding of the mnestic space set up. This is done with special attention to the topics of emotions, chromatic perception, and the design of temporary spaces and services. The research first considers the articulation of a common lexicon regarding the memory of places, atmospheres of spaces and atlas of emotions, among others. Then, the project analysis devices for activating the memory in exhibition spaces, through data collection and defines parameters for the design of future spaces related to memory and emotions. The result is the collective construction of an archive of visual materials for the concepts proposed. This is being done through an open call that has been spread online through the project’s platforms. The shared archive and results will be available online to contribute to a further perspective on design studies connected with memory and spaces.

OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were (1) to determine differences between faculty and student opinions about university classrooms when the User's Environmental Interaction Framework (UEIF) model's quadrants were considered together, (2) to determine the positive, negative, and different effects between these populations within each UEIF quadrant, and (3) to determine faculty and student use.

The project entitled Diplorasis overlays multiple fields of enquiry. It appropriates and overlaps readings on embodied and disembodied vision in order to produce a contemporary understanding of duration. In particular, the work attempts to rethink how a stereoscopic vision and a cinematic vision might be re-configured and synthesized through the use of digital technologies.

The reason for undertaking this research came as a need to understand the users, their interactions and activities in the natural context. Understanding these three factors gives rise to the effective outcomes of design processes. For clarification and validity of this research, the next paragraph and sections will highlight the issues and contributions from different fields of architecture, interaction design, urbanism, psychology, anthropology, healthcare, human-computer interaction, user experience design and business respectively.
Humans need to be understood in order for their needs to be met as they are the core of any process. For these needs to be met, the environment they interact with should comply with their activities. One of the many ways this can be achieved is by adhering to the aspect of design that appeals to human needs in the built environment. Where the built environment here refers either the virtual (intangible) and physical (tangible) environment. The most prominent aspect of the human anatomy that appeals more to the design process beyond taste and smell are the auditory, visual and tactile aspect respectively. All these aspects work in unison to enhance the user experience in any given environment, especially the built environment. The attributes of the built environment that combine to form a system, designer should follow to design effective environments are the psychological and the physical attributes, as these should be understood before designing environments for human.
Understanding human needs in the natural environment is crucial to creating systems and processes tailored to their needs. For effective representation of information, stressing the need for clarity, simplicity and order is important in addition to making things visible. Though a few things need to be considered such as individual differences and variation in addition to accessibility issues. This will result in a happier and satisfied user, as it will reduce confusion, mis-interpretation, error and ultimately frustration.
Over the years, computing has drifted from personal computing to ubiquitous systems which is totally becoming smaller and Intangible making it possible for people to communicate seamlessly. This has created the affordance of designers and researchers to develop systems and processes that support such with the consideration of outliers who are people with special needs or capabilities. People with special needs abound everywhere, but to what extent has their needs been met? This leads the researcher to design with a purpose.
Design research is a process employed by designers to solve design problems by seeking to understand human needs, which can be achieved when the researcher takes time to observe and participate in human activities. Researching with outliers and people with special needs is crucial for effective and useful functionality because collaborating with such stake holders gives meaning to inclusive design. Interdisciplinary collaboration and participatory design is crucial to the design process especially in the built environments, and therefore the design process should be seen as an avenue for interdisciplinary learning and inclusion. This invariably brings knowledge of each discipline, group and stakeholder represented to the table. This allows for knowledge sharing leading to the adoption of patterns in a unified manner that draws from the collaborative design process in interdisciplinary teams and collaborative groups.

The presented study discusses problems related to local development strategy in terms of creative human capital development. The analysis and critical review of the subject literature, supported by experience in economic and local government practice, were used in the course of conducted research. The core of the study consists in tabular presentation of local development strategy exemplary components, in the areas where creative human capital is developed. The diagnosis of socio-economic situation, SWOT/TWOS analysis, sector struc-tural analysis, PEST analysis, the tree of municipal problems, the analysis of key trends occurring in the environment, mission and vision, development scenarios, the tree of strategic goals, the concept of municipality promotion, the measures for strategic goals implementation, as well as monitoring and evaluating processes, were discussed in the paper. Within the framework of the key conclusions it can be adopted that the strategy of local development constitutes both, a useful tool and an element of creative human capital strengthening and developing in a municipality.

The contribution frames the essays, studies, research and projects published in issue 9 of AGATHÓN on ‘The SecondLife of the Built Environment’, an interesting topic for universities, businesses and industry. Climate changes, excessive use of soil, renewable resources, ever-increasing production of waste, the current pandemic emergency and the global socio-economic crisis have in fact entered our daily life. Even if these are tragic issues, they can be, somehow, seized as an opportunity to rethink the way we live and our world. In this ‘revolutionary’ (Floridi, 2020) and ‘polycrisis’ (Losasso, 2020) context, specifically referring to the building industry, the Academy, the Research and Industry worlds are called to give answers – based on sustainability and the principles of the Green Deal but also and mostly of the new Bauhaus – that can encourage reconsiderations and re-orientations of processes and products, new projects on places, buildings, objects and materials, able to positively affect the governance of the global change that our planet and humanity need, able to give a ‘new life’ to the built and/or transformed environment, at any scale.

This paper proposes a design methodology that reframes the potential of navigational technologies such as Google Street View from a record for passive consumption to an active agent of cultural production – a means to reimagine the city as dynamic landscape.

Specifically, the paper examines Street View as a cinematic medium, or a spatio-temporal representation of the built environment, and how this representation can impact the design of the built world.  Since change is inherent to landscape and because landscapes are typically perceived or experienced in movement and through time, developing new and excavating old time-based representational tools must continue to adequately describe a subject that exists in constant flux. Cinematic techniques are critical to this effort for the range of associations with landscape (time, mood and atmosphere or affect, narrative, scene, etc). This investigation contextualizes Street View as a cinematic medium, most particularly because it captures the world in movement (cinema coming from the Greek kinema, “movement”). Its output additionally provides an imaged re-presentation of the atmospheric and material variety of the phenomenal world. It is thus also inherently connected to landscape, whose own etymology bears strong “scenic” associations. Most fundamentally, its documentary-like quality catalogs the effects of humans’ environmental values, as well as reveals the sociospatial practices of everyday life. 

Most fundamentally, the paper considers Street View as a “story space” and proposes an open-ended creative methodology in which design functions as a form of storytelling – exploring how sociospatial circumstances uncovered by Street View might trigger new stories of people and place. Because the footage registers only moments in the temporal continuum, it provokes the imagination to consider possible narratives that both support and transform these fleeting glimpses. Recognizing the cinematic potentials of the medium and what it makes visible, the research thus proposes designs, not for the fixed and physical notion of site, but the spatio-temporal and provisional quality of situations.
