South Eastern Europe

Eight community mental health care centres (initiated by the South-Eastern Europe Stability Pact) in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro and Romania were evaluated. Characteristics of patients, patient reported outcomes and patient views of care were assessed in 305 psychiatric patients. Patient characteristics varied across centres, with most patients having long term psychotic disorders. Treatment satisfaction and therapeutic relationships were rated favourably. Subjective quality of life mean scores were rather low, with higher satisfaction with health and dissatisfaction with the financial and employment situation. Being unemployed was the only factor associated with poor quality of life and lower treatment satisfaction. Most developing centres target patients with persistent psychotic disorders. Care appears highly valued by the patients. The findings encourage establishing more centres in the region and call for employment schemes for people with mental illnesses.

Given that the vast majority of employment globally is in the informal economy, this paper offers a new analytical framework which delineates varieties of capitalism by their degree of informalization and the character of the informal economy.

Forest fires causes and motivations are poorly understood in southern and south-eastern Europe. This research aims to identify how experts perceive the different causes of forest fires as defined in the classification proposed by the European Commission in 2013. A panel of experts (N = 271) was gathered from the EU Southern Member States (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain) and from Central (Switzerland) and south-eastern Europe (Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of North Macedonia, and Turkey). Experts were asked to answer a questionnaire to score the importance of the 29 fire causes using a five point (1–5) Likert Scale. This paper is studying the degree of financial independence and decision of local authorities, in a number of transition countries in South-Eastern Europe. Our research identified the strengths and weaknesses of public finance reform, for each country, followed by a classification of decentralization in the analyzed area.

The analysis of morphological, behavioural and genetic characters of whiskered bats revealed a new European bat species within the family Vespertilionidae. We describe the morphology, karyology, genetic similarity, ecology and distribution of Myotis alcathoe n. sp. It closely resembles Myotis mystacinus, Myotis brandtii and Myotis ikonnikovi in morphology, but all four species show clear genetic differences in two mitochondrial genes (ND1 and 12S rRNA). Myotis alcathoe n. sp. is the smallest species among the European whiskered bats and uses the highest-frequency echolocation calls of all the European Myotis species. It prefers to hunt in small valleys with deciduous trees and flowing water, which is an endangered habitat. Records from Greece and Hungary indicate a distribution range in south-eastern Europe.

This paper investigates the long-term effects of population ageing in a number of ECE emerging market economies. The latest revision of the UN World Population Prospects implies that all of the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) and South-Eastern Europe (SEE) will experience population ageing over the period 2010-2050. In most of them, the ageing process will be associated with rising dependency ratios as the share of the working-age groups in the total population shrinks. In these economies, the combination of an ageing and declining population is likely to reduce the effective labor supply, threatening to undermine the sustainability of their public pension and health systems. The long 19th century was crucial for the development of South Eastern Europe since during this period the region was modernized on different layers – political, economic, and social. Many factors which had impact on this process could be pointed out. No doubt the “agents of modernization” stand out among them. These were persons who directly or indirectly were bringing, transmitting, developing, or adopting new ideas and knowledge in this part of Europe during the long 19th century.

The workshop is focused on two major issues. One the one hand this are the figures and the personalities and their role in the processes of change and innovation that occurred in the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans. One the other hand the workshop will be focused on the layers of the modernization - political, economic and technological, and social and religious.

National Observatory of Athens (NOA) currently operates ENIGMA (HellENIc GeoMagnetic Array), an array of 4 ground-based magnetometer stations in the area of south-eastern Europe (central and southern Greece). The current stations are latitudinally equispaced between 30◦ and 33◦ corrected geomagnetic latitude. In the near future another station will be installed in Macedonia or Thrace, and there are plans for the installation of an additional station in Crete by the end of 2010. Magnetic field measurements are essential for correlative satellite and ground-based studies of various magnetospheric phenomena (Schwingenschuh et al., 1996). Αναζητώντας στη μακρά πορεία αναγέννησης του νεοελληνικού θεάτρου τα μορφοποιά συστατικά και τα σημεία μετάβασης, τις ρήξεις αλλά και τις συγκλίσεις, το μπόλιασμα της μιας παράδοσης μέσα στην άλλη, δεν είναι δυνατόν να μην αναγνωρίσει κανείς πως η περίοδος του Διαφωτισμού αποτελεί τομή για τον σύνολο χώρο στον οποίο έδρασε η ελληνική παιδεία. Ρήξη που συνίσταται στον τομέα της δραματουργίας που εξετάζουμε στο παρόν βιβλίο (επιλέγοντας ένα είδος χαλαρής σύνθεσης, που οδηγεί ωστόσο σε αρκετά διεξοδική περιήγηση), τόσο στην ανανέωση της μορφής, της δραματικής φόρμας όσο και στη λειτουργία ―εννοείται κυρίως η ιδεολογική λειτουργία― του κειμένου. Aπόρροια των κοινωνικών διεργασιών που οδήγησαν στην εθνική αφύπνιση, το θέατρο του ελληνικού Διαφωτισμού έγινε με την σειρά του (όπως δηλαδή το ευρωπαϊκό θέατρο της ‘φιλοσοφικής προπαγάνδας’) όχημα των ριζοσπαστικών και δημοκρατικών αντιλήψεων. Kαι κάτι ακόμη σημαντικό που δεν μπορεί κανείς να προσπεράσει αβασάνιστα: αυτή η δραματουργική αντίληψη αποτέλεσε κομβικό σημείο αναφοράς, το πέρασμα από τη σπασμωδική και διάσπαρτη προεπαναστατική θεατρική ζωή στην επίπονη διαδικασία κανονικότητας και θεσμικής υπόστασης του θεάτρου στη μετεπαναστατική Eλλάδα.
Η μονογραφία περιέχει Εισαγωγή τιτλοφορούμενη: “Συνέχειες και τομές στην ιστορία του νεοελληνικού θεάτρου (17ος-19ος αι.)” και διαιρείται σε δυο κεντρικά μέρη. Το πρώτο πραγματεύεται τον “μακρύ” για την Ελλάδα 18ο αιώνα ως την Επανάσταση. Ξεκινά με σκέψεις για την “Ιστορία της ιστορίας του νεοελληνικού θεάτρου”, που αφορούν σε ζητήματα περιοδολόγησης και συνεχίζει με τον 18ο αιώνα: Επιβιώσεις του Κρητικού θεάτρου, Διαφωτισμός - Φαναριώτες. Στη δεύτερη θεματική ενότητα αφιερώνονται τα υπόλοιπα κεφάλαια· πρώτον για τις μεταφράσεις: Μολιέρος, Μεταστάσιος (με κύριο παράδειγμα “Τα Ολύμπια”), Γκολντόνι· ακολουθούν σατιρικά πρωτότυπα κείμενα (με ανάλυση κυρίως της “Κωμωδίας Νέας της Βλαχίας”) και η “Εκκόλαψη της σκηνικής εμπειρίας”: Σμύρνη, Κωνσταντινούπολη, Φαναριώτες, Παραδουνάβιες Ηγεμονίες, Οδησσός, Αμπελάκια, Ιωάννινα.
Το Δεύτερο Μέρος αφιερώνεται στον 19ο αιώνα και υφαίνει τα νήματα των εξελίξεων περίπου από το 1800, οδηγώντας την εξιστόρηση ως τη γενιά του 1880, με μεγαλύτερη βαρύτητα στο πρώτο μισό του 19ου αιώνα. Η πρώτη θεματική ενότητα περιλαμβάνει το προεπαναστατικό θέατρο (θέματα, μορφολογία-αισθητική, κωμωδία και εθνική κωμωδία), ακολουθεί μια εκτενής θεματική ενότητα για το θέατρο του Διαφωτισμού στα Επτάνησα (με κεφάλαια για τους Μεταστάσιο, Αλφιέρι, την ιταλόφωνη δραματουργική παραγωγή του Ανδρέα Κάλβου, για τον Ιωάννη Ζαμπέλιο, την Ελισάβετ Μουτζάν-Μαρτινέγκου, τον Δημήτριο Γουζέλη, και τον Αντώνιο Μάτεσι, για τις θεατρικές εξελίξεις στην Κέρκυρα, την Κεφαλονιά και τα Κύθηρα, για τη μετάβαση προς το εθνικό δράμα, με επίκεντρο τον “Κωνσταντίνο Παλαιολόγο” του Ι. Ζαμπέλιου. Ένα άλλο κεφάλαιο ασχολείται με τον θεατρικό χώρο και την αστική κοινωνία του 19ου αιώνα, δίνοντας έμφαση στον ρόλο του ιταλικού μελοδράματος· σχετικά με αυτό παρακολουθείται μια ιδεολογική συζήτηση στο περιοδικό “Ο Τοξότης” του Θ. Ορφανίδη. Το τέλος του β’ μέρους ασχολείται με το μετεπαναστατικό ρεπερτόριο: ξένοι ρομαντικοί συγγραφείς, ρομαντικές θεωρίες· ακολουθεί η κωμωδία σε μετάφραση και πρωτότυπα έργα, η συζήτηση γύρω από τη φύση και τον ρόλο της κωμωδίας, η πολιτική σάτιρα και η κωμωδία ηθών. Εν συνεχεία εστιάζεται ο φακός της έρευνας στην ιταλική όπερα και τη γαλλική οπερέτα, και η σύντομη αυτή θεματικη ενότητα, ‘εν είδει επιλόγου’, τελειώνει με τη δραματική παραγωγή της λογοτεχνικής γενιάς του ’80, το κωμειδύλλιο, το δραματικό ειδύλλιο, την επιθεώρηση και το “Νατουραλισμό”. Ο τόμος κλείνει με εκτενή ελληνική και ξενόγλωσση βιβλιογραφία και αναλυτικά ευρετήρια.
