Wireless technologies are ubiquitous today and the mobile phones are one of the prodigious output of this technology. Although the familiarization and dependency of mobile phones is growing at an alarming pace, the biological effects due to the exposure of radiations have become a subject of intense debate. The present evidence on mobile phone radiation exposure is based on scientific research and public policy initiative to give an overview of what is known of biological effects that occur at radiofrequency (RF)/ electromagnetic fields (EMFs) exposure. The conflict in conclusions is mainly because of difficulty in controlling the affecting parameters. With an objective to determine the period of persistence of the metal-induced adaptive response to chemical mutagens and heavy metals, growing root meristems of Allium cepa were conditioned by cadmium sulfate (CdSO4), 4×10−7 and 4×10−6 M for 1 h and subsequently challenged by maleic hydrazide (MH), 5×10−3 M or methyl mercuric chloride (MMCl), 1.26×10−6 M for 3 h at different time intervals ranging from a few minutes to several hours following the conditioning dose. Root meristems, fixed at regular intervals during recovery from 6 to 48 h, were cytologically analysed for cells with micronuclei (MNC). The adaptive responses to MH and MMCl were observed as early as 5 min after the Cd-conditioning that persisted for at least 48 h. Metabolic inhibitors, cycloheximide (CH), 10−7 M and buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), 10−4 M administered either prior to or simultaneous with Cd-conditioning effectively prevented the adaptive response to MH. Whereas BSO, an inhibitor of phytochelatin synthesis, prevented the adaptive responses from 15 min to 8 h after the conditioning dose, CH an inhibitor of cytoplasmic protein synthesis prevented the same from 6 to 48 h. The findings underscored the differential roles of phytochelatins and proteins underlying the foregone metallo-adaptive response.

Teas of Vernonia condensata Baker (Asteraceae) are widely used in Brazil for gastro-intestinal disorders and to treat several other diseases. In this study, we evaluated the acute toxicity, embryotoxicity and mutagenicity of a lyophilized aqueous extract (LAE) from V. condensata leaves. Single doses of LAE, up to 5000 mg/kg body weight, were given orally or intraperitoneally to male and female Swiss albino mice. No toxicity was observed after oral administration. The "Approximate Lethal Dose" after intraperitoneal injections was 3400 mg/kg for males and 5000 mg/kg for females. Embryotoxicity was investigated in Han:NMRI mice. LAE (0, 500 and 2000 mg/kg/day) was given by gavage on days 10, 11 and 12, and dams were submitted to caesarean sections on day 18 of pregnancy. Fetuses were weighed, examined for externally visible malformations, and evaluated for skeletal anomalies. Except for a slight reduction of fetal body weight accompanied by signs of delayed ossification at the highest dose, no other embryotoxic effect was noted in the exposed offspring. LAE-induced mutagenicity was evaluated in the Salmonella/microsome assay without and with S9 mixture. LAE, tested up to 5000 microg/plate, was not mutagenic to tester strains TA97a, TA98 and TA100. Results therefore suggest that V. condensata aqueous extracts present low acute toxicity and pose neither teratogenic nor mutagenic risks.

Compare the efficacy of the cleaning technique usually employed in our healthcare facility to eliminate environmental contamination with cyclophosphamide with that of the Surface Safe commercial kit. This is a three-step evaluative and comparative study involving: (i) the voluntary contamination of the surface of a hood with a pre-established quantity of cyclophosphamide (20,000,000 ng), (ii) the cleaning of the work surface of the hood using a cleaning technique usually employed in our healthcare facility or that of the product Surface Safe, and (iii) the quantification of cyclophosphamide detected on the work surface. The usual cleaning technique involves the use of a mixture of 0.05% chlorhexidine and 70% ethyl alcohol to clean surfaces, whereas the product Surface Safe involves a combined two-step sodium hypochlorite and sodium thiosulfate wash. Epidemiologic studies indicate that prolonged exposure to high pollution levels is associated with increased risk of cancer, especially lung cancer. However, under conditions of moderate or low air pollution, epidemiologic evidence does not permit reliable conclusions. Biomarker-based population studies may serve as complementary tools providing a better understanding of the relative contribution of ambient atmospheric pollution to the overall genotoxic burden suffered by city dwellers. However, past efforts to apply biomarkers to studies of low levels exposure to urban air pollution have given inconclusive results, partly because of the absence of adequate data on personal exposure, covering a time-window which is appropriate for the biomarkers being examined, as well as a battery of biomarkers reflecting different stages of the carcinogenic process. We have reviewed the mutagenicity of benzidine analogues (including benzidine-based dyes), with a primary emphasis on evaluating results of the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay. Many of these amines are mutagenic in tester strains TA98 and TA100 but require exogenous mammalian activation (S9) for activity. A few amines with halogen or nitro-groups in the structure are direct-acting mutagens. The addition of a sulfonic acid moiety to the molecule of benzidine reduced the mutagenicity of benzidine; whereas, methoxy, chloro, or methyl group additions did not. Complexation with a metal ion also decreased the mutagenicity. A substitution of an alkyl group on the ortho position next to an amine group also influenced the mutagenicity. Most carcinogenic benzidine analogues are mutagenic, and their metabolism to electrophiles that interact with DNA, leading to mutations, plays a central role in their carcinogenesis.

Comparative mutagenic and genotoxic effects of three antimalarial drugs, chloroquine, primaquine and amodiaquine, were assessed in the Ames mutagenicity assay (in strains TA97a, TA100, TA102 and TA104) and in vivo sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosome aberration (CA) assays in bone marrow cells of mice. These are the most commonly used antimalarial drugs available at present throughout the world. The results of the bacterial mutagenicity assays showed a very weak mutagenic effect of all three drugs in Salmonella strains TA97a and TA100 both with and without S9 mix and in TA104 only with S9 mix. The results of the in vivo SCE and CA assays indicate that these three drugs are genotoxic in bone marrow cells of mice.
