Liquified Natural Gas

Natural gas as a primary fossil fuel, will grow faster than both oil and coal for the next decades and distinguishes by its lower environmental impact in comparison to other conventional fuels. The paper focuses on the critical problem of natural gas supply in Greece and especially in its liquid form, LNG. A crucial problem in this field is the selection and the evaluation of LNG supplier. A multicriteria analysis, using Promethee II method, is carried out, evaluating all the potential LNG export terminals. The approach is based on selected criteria in the fields of economic supply, low environmental impact of the transfer, satisfaction of technical specifications and the current and future availability of the supply. The obtained results showed that there are advantageous LNG supply corridors for Greece with good performances in almost all the criteria.

In pursuance of gaining practical knowledge about petroleum industry and to get familiar with the professional environment, internship is essential for engineering students. In this report the learning during the internship at Kailashtilla LPG plant of RPGCL has been summarized. As being a fractionation plant the process of RPGCL is not that complicated. But only the process isn’t the only thing to be concerned about. A company comes with a whole package consisting process, quality control, utilities, marketing, environment and safety precautions etc. In this report at first the project definition of the company and company’s background and activities have been highlighted. In the process description section, the whole process of converting the raw material NGL (Natural Gas Liquid) to LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and MS (motor spirit) and condensate to petrol and HSD (high speed diesel) have been discussed briefly but clearly. Process flow diagram has been attached for the ease of understanding the process. The quality of the products is a major thing to be concerned about as it’s being delivered to the consumers. The company ensures the desired quality of the products through their quality control department equipped with sophisticated equipment. In the quality control section, different product specifications are discussed. In the utility section the specifications and capacity of various equipment of the process have been discussed. Codes and standards of different equipment have also been given as per requirement. In the marketing section the buying and selling strategy of the company has come into consideration. As environmental impact of an industrial process is the major concern nowadays the safety and environment section consist of what precautions the industry takes to avoid hazards and in case of a hazard how they handle it. Thus, this report gives a brief idea about the operational process, production, quality of the product, marketing, finance, utilities and overall environment of this plant clearly.

Natural gas as fuel for electricity production has significant advantages, such as the reduction of environmental emissions and the lower operational cost. Due to the flexibility of gas engines, the exploitation of renewable energy sources in an area, can be maximized. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the possibility of LNG supply for sustainable electricity production in insular small-scale electricity systems. A novel multicriteria evaluation model has been developed, based on the methods of Additive Value Model, PROMETHEE and Simos approach. A set of coherent criteria has been selected, that fits perfectly with the demands of this type of problem. The proposed methodology has been implemented in four Greek islands (as they are the most indicative examples and with future perspectives to use natural gas for electricity production) and in one power plant in the mainland (as another typical example of small-scale electricity production). The evaluation process included four supply alternatives that cover the annual fuel demands of the examined regions. The obtaining ranking showed that the development of a network supplying individual small-scale terminals in a roundtrip is preferable, compared to the separate supply of each terminal.
