O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar desperdícios no processo de solicitação de materiais visando propor melhorias através da abordagem Lean Office. O método da pesquisa utilizado foi à pesquisa-ação, o projeto se desenvolveu no setor de Cabeça de poço de uma empresa de grande porte do setor de óleo e gás da região sudeste do Rio de janeiro. A execução do método deu-se através de coleta de dados com entrevistas, consulta a documentos, observação direta e mapeamento do fluxo de valor (MFV) no ambiente da pesquisa com o objetivo se obter um maior entendimento a respeito do processo estudado. Ao final do trabalho obteve-se, primeiro, uma contribuição teórica, pois os conceitos foram aplicados em uma empresa do setor de óleo e gás, ambiente ainda pouco explorado por aplicações da abordagem utilizada. Parte das propostas sugeridas foram implantadas resultando na diminuição do lead time em até 24%. Esses resultados são consequência da melhoria da estrutura e da eliminação de atividades desnecessárias que não agregavam valor. Conclui-se que é possível aplicar os conceitos do Lean Office no setor de óleo e gás, considerando as restrições e adaptações necessárias da organização.

Buffers are often used in Construction to prevent the negative impact of Variability and Uncertainty on projects. Inventories of materials, budget contingencies, time float, and excess of equipment capacity are examples of the type of Buffers found in construction. However, usually the design and management of Buffers is based mostly on intuition and performed informally. New production philosophies such as Lean Production, Lean Construction and Theory of Constraints allow a more systematic and rigorous approach to the Design and Management of Buffers. This paper discusses the role of production management philosophies in the Design and Management of Buffers, and how selected IT tools can support this process.  The paper also provides some guidelines for the design of Buffers in repetitive construction projects using a proposed conceptual model.

In the pharmaceutical industry, systems for improving operational effectiveness and efficiency are becoming more and more popular. In this paper, developments in the industry’s improvements in operational effectiveness and efficiency have been analyzed. A holistic model is presented which builds the basis for the presented study results. The study includes data gathered from pharmaceutical production sites in surveys in 2004 and 2009. The analysis is divided according to the four sub-systems: Total Productive Maintenance, Total Quality Management, Just-in-Time, and the Management System. For each sub-system, key performance indicators and associated elements (practices and instruments) from 2004 to 2009 are investigated. The data indicates that the industry did make continuous steps towards “Excellence in Operations” between 2004 and 2009. Pharmaceutical companies took control over their former low asset utilization and managed to improve the efficiency of their quality systems; however, they are still far away from having any kind of “continuous flow”, smooth production scheduling or make-to-order manufacturing. It can be said that most of the companies are still working on the effectiveness side rather than focusing on the efficiency side.

The aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) has always played a key role in the aviation industry which is responsible for restoring aircraft to flight conditions based on a set of technical instructions and implementation of repair processes .According to research’s, the most important reasons why airlines choose MRO centers to provide services are quality, turnaround time (TAT), and cost, respectively. In Iran, due to the status of the airline fleet and the number of available aircraft, reducing the service time has a higher priority than other options.
In this research paper, the application of lean, its principles and techniques and in particular the study of its compatibility and effectiveness in order to reduce Turn Around Time (TAT) in the aircraft repair and overhaul industry has been considered. Accordingly, at the beginning and after the comprehensive review and analysis of the literature, the subject of a comprehensive list of principles of lean production has been studied and the indicators have been considered according to the characteristics of the aircraft repair and overhaul industry. Then, based on the obtained indicators, a questionnaire was prepared and based on it, more than 25 hours of interviews with experts, including deputies, managers and experts of the aircraft repair and overhaul industry in the case study were conducted. Based on the Yin analysis method (2003), the data of the questionnaire were analyzed and evaluated in order to identify the influential factors of service time during the aircraft maintenance check. Based on the research findings, the existence of defects in some areas, such as the lack of inventory management and alternative planning for serviceable components have created significant effects in increasing the service time of aircraft.

The concept of Just in Time (JIT) has been studied for more than 20 years, so there are lots of the academic articles and case studies which give the objectives, the backgrounds, the principals, and the techniques of Just in time. The objective of this paper is to gain further knowledge into the JIT/Lean purchasing approach and to identify future research directions. We will concentrate on JIT purchasing and the Lean purchasing, since the JIT purchasing is an important concept of the lean management, therefore in the first part, we will discuss about the JIT purchasing, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of this technique.
