In der bestehenden Diskussion um den Begriff des Spektakels haben sich seit Jahren keine größeren Neuerungen zugetragen. Trotz einer beständigen Zahl an Veröffentlichungen hierzu, stagniert dieser Begriff zu einem reinen Buzzword. Guy Debords 1967 erschienenes und immer wieder neu aufgelegtes Buch „Die Gesellschaft des Spektakels“ hat sich dabei zu einer vereinheitlichten Referenz entwickelt. Jedoch ist Debords Hauptwerk nach wie vor kritisch zu hinterfragen, formt er doch einen ahistorischen, rigide in sich geschlossenen Begriff des Spektakels, dessen Voraussetzung stets die Anklage bleibt, nicht die Analyse.

Jonathan Crary fragt zurecht, warum Spektakel stets mit einem direkten Artikel bezeichnet würde, denn könne es nicht unterschiedliche Modi des Spektakulären geben?  Dieser Frage möchte sich der vorliegende Text in Bezug auf die Filmanalyse nähern. Hier wurde in der Vergangenheit mit Begriffen wie Exzess (Thompson) oder Attraktion (Gunning) gearbeitet, um verwandte Phänomene zu beschreiben, sie aber nicht schon von vornherein – durch die Ubiquität von Debords Spektakelbegriff – ideologiekritisch einzufärben.
Doch wie lässt sich das Spektakel am Gegenstand orientiert denken? Hier ist einer der wichtigsten Punkte Debords die implizierte Degradierung von Menschen zu scheinbar passiven Zuschauern durch das allgegenwärtige Spektakel. 

Um den Spektakel-Begriff produktiv zu gestalten, gilt es, Debord hier beim Wort zu nehmen. Denn die Begriffe ‚Zuschauer’ und ‚Spektakel’ teilen sich denselben lateinischen Wortstamm, spectare, der sich einerseits auf das sehende Subjekt, andererseits auf das zu Sehende bezieht.

It’s not about making the history – incommensurable, actually – of the extension and the intensification of the day, meaning of the enlightenment, but it’s about tracking its wheels, in the heart of the relative singularity of its manifestations, to make manifest the interest and, consequently, the need to think today the own of the “nocturnal phenomenon” and, beyond, of the night itself.

The thesis analyses the scientific and technical origins of the CRT, its proliferation as part of television culture and its recent slide into obsolescence. It contextualises CRT technology use in art from the 1960s to the present, with specific reference to works by artists who explore the historicity and materiality of the device in nuanced ways. By drawing on theorists such as Raymond Williams, David Joselit, Marita Sturken and Joel Burges, the thesis examines how notions of technological obsolescence, flow, immediacy of transmission and technological developments of the digital age affect current conceptualisations of CRT technology in select examples of historical and contemporary art.

Following the work of Korean-German social theorist Byung-Chul Han, we can see that in his attempts to describe our current society, he builds the concept of Achievement Society through terms like tiredness, depression, burnout, restlessness, and so on. His choice to tackle society through such maladies is accompanied by plenty other social theorists such as Jonathan Crary’ s focus on the end of sleep or Paul Virilio’ s long time focus on speed. In fact, much of the political emancipatory literature and movements have tried to propose exits to similar problems. The anti-work authors on the left, the praise of idleness of Domenico de Masi and of Bertrand Russell, or even recent decolonial theories of Sumak Kwasai and Teko-Pora, based on the indigenous philosophies from South America are good examples of such a preoccupation. Meanwhile, in the case of Japan, where death by overwork (karoshi) has become part of the global imagination about Japan, the preoccupation from the social theorists, policy makers, and social activists seems to rest much more on access to work or worker’ s rights, rather than on the aforementioned consequences of contemporary forms of all-encompassing work. This paper will argue, however, that rather than being an exception to the case of Achievement Society, Japan is a great example of such categorization. In order to build this argument, ethnography with youngsters in Japan currently working or preparing to work will be examined, as well as movements and discourses on Work-Life Balance and the Slow Movement.  By the end, this paper will also examine the Japanese case in comparison to the global scenario.

Publikacje te nie w każdym wypadku mają charakter rewelatorski, nierzadko wyłamują drzwi już dawno otwarte, ale większość ma wspólną zaletę: rezygnuje ze snucia marzenia o powszechnym szczęściu i dobrobycie, które zapewnią wielkie koncerny, internet, „elastyczne godziny zatrudnienia” i tak długo fetyszyzowana niezależność."

This article surveys the distinctive optical properties of stereoscopic 3-D in a cinematic context. Through an analysis of the nineteenth-century stereoscope (and the theories of vision that underpin it) and then a critique of the equation of stereoscopy with mimesis, the article works towards identifying several aspects of stereoscopic cinema that are insufficiently explored in contemporary film studies. These include the medium's immateriality, inherent subjectivity and use of visual distortion. The broader argument of the article is that, in line with the work of Jonathan Crary, there ‘never really is a stereoscopic image’; that is, the phrase stereoscopic image is oxymoronic since the content that stereoscopic exhibition presents is not imagistic and monocular but embodied and illusionistic. This observation has important consequences for how we interpret 3-D cinema.
