Książka "Allotopie. Topografia światów fikcjonalnych" powstała z bardzo przyziemnej potrzeby: stworzenia swego rodzaju kompendium zbierającego teorie fikcji i narracji przydatne w analizowaniu literatury fantastycznej i światotwórczej. W odróżnieniu jednak od większości typowych monografii fantasy i SF tutaj głównym celem stała się próba zrozumienia fenomenu tytułowej allotopii – czyli takiego osobliwego świata, który mimo całej swej fantastyczności dąży do ukazywania się czytelnikowi jako wręcz bardziej realny aniżeli świat rzeczywisty. Z tej jednakowoż racji, że allotopia jest raczej rodzajem fikcyjnego świata niż gatunkiem czy nawet konwencją, przywoływane w książce powieści i cykle powieściowe – m.in. Płasklandia Edwina Abbotta Abbotta, Silmarillion J.R.R. Tolkiena, Peanatema Neala Stephensona czy Inne pieśni Jacka Dukaja – ukazują konieczność interdyscyplinarnego otwarcia badań literaturoznawczych, którym przychodzi nieraz kapitulować przed złożonością obecnych w nich konstrukcji narracyjnych. Opisywany tu szczególny przypadek fantastyki światotwórczej ma w konsekwencji niewiele wspólnego z typowym zabiegiem fantastyki, porywającym czytelnika z przydomowego ogródka do „nibylandii” i dziedziny ułudy – za to o wiele więcej ze świadomym zamieszkaniem w „nigdylandii”, i to w dodatku z wszelkimi konsekwencjami wydziedziczenia z wszystkiego tego, co naturalne, prawdziwe, faktycz¬ne, swojskie i znajome. Allotopii w odróżnieniu od klasycznej fantastyki nie wystarcza zatem proste przeciwstawienie świata zwyczajnego światu niezwyczajnemu dla prostego wydobycia dzielącej je cechy niezwyczajności. Bo choć z pewnością jest wówczas łatwiej odróżnić to, co faktyczne, od tego, co fantastyczne, to nieporównanie już trudniej doświadczyć tego, bez czego allotopia nie miałaby racji bytu – a zatem imersywnego zanurzenia w realia takiego świata, z którym można się do tego stopnia związać, by chcieć doń powracać i móc za nim tęsknić.

The article is the first Polish attempt to provide a theoretical framework for a relatively unknown term ‘allotopia’, coined by Umberto Eco in essay Il mondi della fantascienza. However, instead of following rather poststructuralist Eco’s reasoning, the text proceeds with the deconstruction of the underlain dichotomy between real (natural, ordinary, known, empirical, realistic) and unreal (unnatural, extraordinary, unknown, counterempirical, fantastic) world — which is subsequently exposed as fundamental for heretofore fantasy and SF studies. Consequently, the paper encourages postmodern reading of those ‘allotopian’ texts that resign from supporting a colonial, two-world model in favour of philosophy conscious worldbuilding.

"In herein paper I shall argue, whether Umberto Eco’s definition of allotopia (Il mondi della fantascienza, 1984) as another, alternate but still “more real than the real one” world should not be revised in the light of cognitive narratology (VR, immersion and storyworlds in Marie-Laure Ryan 1991, Hermann 2002), constructivism (‘reduction of complexity’ in Luhmann 1984), psychonarratology (immersion in Nell 1988, Gerrig 1993) and topography of literature. Following Bernhard Waldenfels’ (1997, 2006) notes on the nature of otherworldliness and its liaisons with what I call ‘xenotopography’, I shall examine whether the typically fantastic trichotomic model of world (empirical world → symbolical gate → counterempirical world) is not nowadays being replaced with pre-established, immersive and imaginative storyworld (purum figmentum). Consequently, I shall claim that the philosophical premises of allotopia and world-building alike are comprising the significant shift between 20th and 21st century prose which manifests in the tendency to create a storyworld prior to the storyline—a ‘matrix for all possible narratives’ (Dukaj 2010). Thus, allotopia will have become a perfect term for a multitude of topographico-literary tendencies, just to mention world-building think-tanks in nearly every video game studio or fictional encyclopaedias, thoroughly describing geography, topography, cartography and chronography (cf. Gavriel Rosenveld’s term of allohistory) of a given storyworld, like for instance the Wookiepaedia for Star Wars franchise or K. W. Fonstad’s The Atlas of Middle-Earth for the preconceived world of J. R. R. Tolkien’s.

The utterance of allotopian encyclopaedias in the coherent “heterocosm of reference’ (Hutcheon 1987) will be exemplified in Frank Herbert’s Dune, Neal Stephenson’s Anathem and Jacek Dukaj’s Inne Pieśni (‘Other Poems’)—novels peculiarly difficult to classify using typical nomenclature (they represent neither fantasy, nor SF, nor even a postmodern or magical realist novel). Moreover, as this prose is adhering the concept of ortsgebunden (Hausherr 1970)—i. e. the ‘place bound nature of literary forms’—by modelling spatial and spatio-tem­poral heterotopian frontiers within the allotopian storyworld, it allows to confront different ethnoses, places, or even lesser worlds—but not any more fairy-tale-bound empirical world which bestows upon a fantastic venturer the promising (though illusory) law to return."

Wroniec Jacka Dukaja to stylizowana na bajkę fantasmagoryczna opowieść o stanie wojennym widzianym oczami dziecka. Ten moment historyczny jest tu koszmarnym snem: sytuacją opresywną, przerażającą, krzywdzącą. Fabuła sprawia wrażenie prostej, przynajmniej aż do momentu nietypowego zakończenia. Co sprawia zatem, że w recenzjach Wrońca pojawiają się tak różne, a nawet przeciwstawne interpretacje? Tomasz Piątek widzi w powieści banalny i wielokrotnie już powtarzany przejaw narodowo-katolickiego dyskursu, Maria Kobielska ocenia ją przede wszystkim jako ambitną krytykę mechanizmu pamięci, a Wojciech Orliński pisze o „opuszczeniu krainy mesjanicznej polskiej literatury”. Co „tkwi” we Wrońcu, w jaki sposób w fantastycznej konstrukcji tego świata otwierają się pola dla ideologii i/lub podważania ideologii?

W swojej konferencyjnej pracy postaram się odpowiedzieć także na inne pytania: na czym polega przetwarzanie historycznych doświadczeń na powieściowe obrazy? Czy Wroniec daje się przeczytać jako wykładalna alegoria, czy jest z gruntu niespójną swobodną fantazją? Na czym polega wykorzystanie przez Dukaja konwencji bajki? Jaki wydźwięk ideologiczny może mieć niejasne zakończenie powieści? W jaki sposób książka odpowiada na postulat samego autora, że „stan wojenny trzeba zrobić”?

Poza samym tekstem powieści przyglądam się jej prasowym i internetowym recenzjom pod kątem tego, jaką „polityczną” interpretację Wrońca proponują i z jakich powodów.

Every reader of Jacek Dukaj’s prose knows (and usually likes) the special kind of stupefaction into which the author’s range of world-creating speculations lead. In Czarne oceany we have to accept the existence of a reality that would emerge if memetics were to enable a completely new form of managing the human memory, if genetic engineering provided a way to design our entire bodies, if telepathy turned out to be a fundamental human ability and if several similar ifs were to become realities. Much of the thrill that this kind of writing allows us to experience “first-hand” springs from the fact that we have to emigrate into alternative histories, for practical purposes co-inventing with the author altered social conditions and political constellations, imagining grammars and lexicons divergent from our own. Importantly, the detailed nature of the projected vision amazes us with its ironclad consistency; Dukaj truly adheres firmly to principles once he sets them, bending everything to conform to them – including readers. This may even lead us to suspect that the way Dukaj operates within the space of Polish literary culture also resembles his method for generating variant realities. The author takes the existence of a certain state of literature as a working hypothesis and treats it as if it were an actually existing condition. His novels thus not only recreate recent and older forms of literary tradition and conventions of both mainstream literature and science fiction, but also dream up certain passive procedures, nonexistent readerly habits, putative events of earlier or current literary life; and for the time of reading, they attempt to provide us with an opportunity to participate in a complicated, bifurcated reception situation.
