Sex segregation, particularly one that is reinforced in the name of religion, is often blamed for fortifying gender discrimination in society as a whole. This dissertation examines this assumption in Islamic society and investigates how such segregation may actually benefit Muslim women. This dissertation specifically asks how sex segregation has been defined among Muslims in Yogyakarta (Indonesia), who holds the authority to form the definition, and how gender separation is translated into mosque spaces and internalized through societal life. Guided by postcolonial feminist theory and poststructuralist visual theory, it further questions not only how gender conceptions permeate the architectural space of the mosque but also how architectural space helps to shape the larger landscape of gender relations.
The mosques of Yogyakarta, comprising Masjid Gedhe Kauman, Musalla ‘Aisyiyah, Musalla Ar-Rosyad, Masjid Keputren, and Masjid Panepen, and the ‘Aisyiyah organization (founded in the early twentieth century) provide a case study for studying how sex segregation is imposed through social and spatial practices. Using data obtained through ethnographic research (participant observation and in-depth interviews) and archival records pertaining to the establishment of these mosques, which include mosques exclusively for women and prayer spaces set aside for them within the congregational mosque, the architectural layout of the mosques is revealed as a spatial translation of the control of the gaze upon women and their sexuality. The control is a disciplinary mechanism of spatial and visual segregation that privileges men and posits the mosque as a space for men. Yet despite this apparent discrimination, segregation can also facilitate women’s access to resources in public space such as the mosque. Because the Javanese mosque as an institution provides space for the express use of women, and thus opportunities for their leadership in that context, it serves as an important political space. By examining how gender difference is accommodated and controlled in these five mosques, this dissertation seeks to provide a model of analysis in architectural studies that may be broadly applicable to promote social justice in the religious sphere.

Governments of developing countries initiate low-income housing schemes with the objectives of enabling the urban poor: upgrade their living conditions, acquire house construction skills and, own houses. In Uganda, most of the low-income housing schemes are estate-driven. Most estate-driven housing correlates with the modernisation development paradigm that holds the assumption that modernity includes the adoption of presumed attributes of western society (Venter and Marais, 2006). This is evident in the plans of most of the low-income housing schemes in Uganda, which were developed with the assumption that each house would be encased by boundary markers to demarcate the plot boundaries by separating the public spaces outside the plot from the private space within. Siting the house block in a plot is usually stipulated by the project, thus further dividing the plot into back and front yards, with the latter posing as a transitional zone between the public space outside the plot and the very private space in the house. A hierarchical spatial pattern of a public space outside the plot, a semi- public in the front yard, the private space inside the house and the semi-private space in the backyard is assumed.
In a home setting, the backyard conventionally houses most of the home chore activities usually performed by women, while public spaces are male-dominated (Nnaggenda-Musana, 2008:147). Thus a gendered space use pattern is expected to be associated with the spatial patterns that emerge due to the existence of boundary walls around the houses both at the house and neighbourhood levels. However, it is observed that in almost all government-provided low- income housing schemes, boundary walls are rarely constructed resulting in the emergence of blurred spatial patterns whereby distinction between private, semi-private, semi-public, and public space is vivid.
This paper explores the effects of the emerging organic spatial patterns on the gendered space use, and the appropriateness of the proposed housing designs to their users. Findings of this study are expected to inform low-income planning and design both nationally and internationally, so as to enhance their appropriateness and efficiency.
The study employs the case study research approach where the Masese Women Housing Scheme (MWHS), manifesting the highest ambition of reducing women’s marginalisation with respect to housing in Uganda, was selected as an atypical case for exploration of gendered space in housing. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, photography, sketching together with document and drawing review and analysis.
The study revealed that the spatial patterns that resulted due to absence of boundary walls are conducive to the low-income households’ life styles, of women, as they provide security, social interaction and enhance home-based enterprises. The study further revealed that the blurred spatial patterns that emerged due to absence of boundary walls have no significance on the gendered usage of the space both at the house and neighbourhood levels. The study thus recommends low-income housing that is devoid of boundaries when planning and designing low-income housing.

"To Answer a Need" distinguishes the women’s club house typology and relates the history of the Women's Club Movement, specifically examining Southern California clubhouses erected during and after the Progressive Era. As women’s club houses are important and rare sites of women's collective history this thesis offers strategies for the appropriate and sensitive reuse of such properties. Their distinctive architectural features and siting make them an advantageous property for many specific reuse projects, and the prevalence of historically designated women’s clubs offers the possibility of redevelopment funded in part with historic tax credits.
Through the end of the nineteenth to the middle of the twentieth century, women's clubs created the environment for activities which changed women’s status, abilities, and opportunities in the 20th century. Clubhouses were designed wholly or in part as “gendered” space which by décor, layout, and functionality gives power to the women working within its walls. Spaces were also gendered female by the manner in which they were used: by and for women, for purposes important to women as a social and political group.
These buildings vary in size and lavishness but are frequently designated historic at some level. They were often the work of a great architect; for reasons unique to the women’s club phenomena many retain remarkable integrity; and each is a physical monument to a significant pattern in history--the change wrought upon American society as women improved themselves, asserted their rights, and fought to become an active and recognized part of society. Clubs’ success in integrating women into public culture has rendered the separate women’s organization somewhat obsolete. Clubs are rapidly closing their doors forever, and the question of how to best preserve this physical reminder of women’s history is becoming an urgent issue. Concepts for woman-centric but viable re-utilization of these gendered spaces are herein described.

This paper explores the continuities and transformations wrought in Tamang systems of sex and gender by the recent extensive wage outmigration, mostly of men. That is, it is about what is happening to the material prospects for Tamang men and women, as well as in Tamang constructions of gendered value. Although both men and women are experiencing dramatic experiential changes, the greater challenges to self-worth are confronting women, whether they are left behind in the villages, migrate halfway to live in Kathmandu, or travel themselves to work and live internationally. As these women and men reconfigure their resources—both economic and social—and as they reinterpret what it means to face these changes, the model of Tamang gender— which is animated by reciprocal and mutually complementary obligations—informs their choices and their understandings of them. The most sweeping strokes of this paper, then, presume to describe the intertwined gendered subjectivities of Tamang men as providers of the basic sustenance for their family line and of Tamang women as generators of future increase, growth and prosperity, in what I call the 'Tamang co-parcener model of gender' as I found it in the 1970s and 80s. Then, the village of Mhanegang, northwest of Kathmandu, was, as David Holmberg (1989) 1 described it (borrowing from Geertz) " involuted " (1963)—closed, involuntarily but self-protectively, upon itself. With the mid-1980s began an explosive out-migration, primarily of men, who, in the case of Mhanegang, because they had largely not participated in the older migrations to India or into the Gurkhas nor even in the eastern Nepal trekking business, went directly to the Gulf, to Southeast Asia, and beyond. In spite of being the main out migrants, however, my research suggests that, viewed through the lenses of this Tamang co-parcener model, these Tamang men continued to be able to see what they were doing as valuable in familiar ways, that is, enduring whatever hardships were required to sustain their families, albeit by sending home wage remittances rather than by farming. It is the women's sense of self that, I will argue, has been most deeply challenged by these changes. Women's experiences of migration can be parsed into three major categories: (1) those women left behind in the rural subsistence village with very young children and elderly parents-in-law; (2) those women who moved with school-age children to Kathmandu so that they could enrol in private schools there; and (3) those women who themselves migrated internationally, with or without their husbands. 2 In all three cases, they are no longer doing the kinds of things that their foremothers prepared them for and through which they would have expected to craft a sense of themselves as honourable women. For some, these challenges appear to be too much. Some are, in fact, quite broken and virtually paralyzed by them, confined to rooms in cities and to lives they do not 1 To whom my debts are inestimable. 2 It is possible that this might be two separate categories—(1) those migrating alone and sending remittances back and (2) those migrating with their husbands and children—but their numbers are currently too small to document such a claim.

_ The home has always reflected the type of society one belongs to, the historical period, and the lifestyle and ways of constructing the family universe. The kitchen has long represented the spatial 'heart' of the home, albeit in different forms, and has often played a key role in family history. On the other hand, the ambiguous part of the kitchen should be underlined, depending on how its inhabitants experience it: social centre and source of warmth in the peasant house, hot forge in which the army of cooks works in the noble palaces, deferred place in the upper-middle-class flats and inhabited only by servants, the field of socio-architectural experimentation in the social housing of the twentieth century. After World War II, the kitchen emerged as a space for everyday family life, and as a consumer good; above all, it was the symbol of achieved (or dreamed of) economic well-being. If, during the 1970s, it embodied the battlefield of feminist political claims, symbolising the domestic prison from which to escape - so much so that it was set on fire in a well-known short film - in the following decades, it became a place for everyone, but where disparate experiences, not only related to food, were carried out by extended families. However, the recent pandemic has shown the limits of contemporary dwellings during forced confinement, especially if the square metres are small and the cohabitants are numerous. Like other home areas, the kitchen has been transformed into an intelligent workstation, accentuating the tendency towards functional hybridisation, but with do-it-yourself adaptations that mostly fail to meet ergonomic and comfort requirements. Moreover, new hygiene has become part of everyday culture, and in the kitchen and at home, different solutions must be designed to respond to an uncertain future.

Many written documents and illustrations left from Ilkhanid period (medieval era) which called Tabriz school in art history studies. Tabriz school was flourished in the reign of Qazan Khan. Ilkhanid illustration covered various subjects like: historical, religious narrations, scientific and mythical issues. Main reason of historiography in Ilkhanid period could be, their interest in recording the conquests and tribal honors. These material considered as an important tools or medium for cultural and social studies of special period. One of interesting aspect of these studies is gender analysis. Pictures are full of symbols and signs which indicate to gender issue, specially placement or position of men or women in architectural elements. This position can show social level or importance of each gender in the society. This paper attempts to find out new ways of understanding relations among gendered spaces in Ilkhanid period through analyzing the illustrations regarding to historical manuscripts. To this aim, Henry Lefebvre theories in Production of space considered as a base of study. Production of space is a concept which introduced by him means that space is a social product that defines all social and political relationships. From his point of view visual products or works can set in the “representation space” class which point to the symbolic aspect of space. Two different class of written documents will consider: The Great Mongol Shahnameh included national epics and mythical history of ancient Iran and Jāmi’ al-tawārīkh is a narration of Mongol history. Methodology is based on two points: chronologically and classification of the objects. After Mongol invasion two ideological conversations happened in Iran between two different nomad and urban societies, Islamic rules alongside of Yasa. Lifestyle of Mongol was based on Yasa rules and nomadic method. Presence of man and woman in this society was equal. Unlike urban lifestyle with Islamic rules and urban spaces of social activities like Bazar or even in private spaces like palaces emphasized on limitations of presence of woman.
Through this research, the conflictions and difference of gendered relations in Ilkhans era will come to the light. Illustrations of Mongol history selected from Jāmi’ al-tawārīkh manuscript from The Diez Albums. The Great Mongol Shahnameh miniatures scattered in different museums. Through analyzing the illustrations, two main spaces istinguished: Mongolian yurts and urban space. Moreover, other various public and private spaces depicted in these miniatures. As a result of the survey on representations of space and gender: on the illustrations of history of the Mongols, the role of women in various
places is much more notable and bold. It shows women roles as a same level with men in all social activities. Whereas in the illustrations of Iranian history women depicted mostly as an observers of a scene and just looking out from the window frames. Also some other architectural elements like porch (Ivan), curtain and attic windows shows the presence of women. Indeed, the urban spaces and constructions represent gender segregation more than camp spaces or yurts.
