Friedrich August Wolf

Homero está morto. Quem matou Homero? A interrogação colocada por dois classicistas estadunidenses, Victor Davis Hanson e John Heath (1998), ecoa um tópos tradicional na história dos Estudos Clássicos e constitui o ponto de partida para uma investigação sobre a pretensa crise dessa disciplina na contemporaneidade. Para isso, o contexto das últimas décadas — em especial, no âmbito das culture wars — é analisado a partir dos conflitos entre diferentes perspectivas sobre a Antiguidade e seus significados para o presente: entre cânone e estudos culturais, entre filologia e teoria, aquilo que em inglês se chama de classics constitui um campo de batalha para classicistas e intelectuais, tanto conservadores quanto progressistas. Contudo, as questões suscitadas por esses debates sugerem que alguns dos impasses contemporâneos têm raízes mais antigas, remontando pelo menos à institucionalização da Altertumswissenschaft [Ciência da Antiguidade] na universidade alemã do século XIX, a partir da fusão de princípios humanistas e historicistas. O responsável por avançar a proposta de uma disciplina moderna para o estudo da Antiguidade é Friedrich August Wolf, autor também da obra que formaliza a “questão homérica” na Modernidade (Prolegomena ad Homerum, 1795). Essas duas frentes de seu trabalho intelectual estão profundamente imbricadas e revelam a que ponto uma reflexão sobre Homero e seus poemas fundamenta a ideia de uma prática filológica desde a Antiguidade. Homero seria não apenas metonímia dos Estudos Clássicos, mas condição de possibilidade para seu desenvolvimento desde os antigos até os (pós-)modernos. Para investigar essa hipótese, desenvolvida por Wolf e assumida como pressuposto pelos estudiosos que escreveram alguma História dos Estudos Clássicos (durante os séculos XIX e XX), a estratégia é remontar aos antigos e estudar suas práticas potencialmente filológicas à luz das especificidades de seus contextos históricos. Com isso, emerge um esboço de uma outra história dos Estudos Clássicos — de Homero a Wolf e além —, delineada a partir da perspectiva oblíqua de quem não deixa de refletir sobre a realidade contemporânea e, tomando consciência de sua própria história, busca enfrentar criticamente seus problemas.

This is the first time F. a. Wolf’s History of roman Literature Programme is translated to Spanish since its first edition in 1787. The programme is written in German (not in Latin, as it was usual in this kind of studies), and roman Literature is shown as a national literature. In addition, we study Wolf’s life, his influence in Spain and we offer a commentary on historiographic ideas found in his programme. These ideas are not far from Weimar classicism aesthetics.

Heutige Rekonstruktionen der Hermeneutik um 1800 beziehen sich zumeist ausschließlich auf autorbezogene Aspekte der Interpretation, doch bleibt neben den dafür üblicherweise eingesetzten Sinnkonzepten der einst bekannte Verstehensgrundsatz des sensus auctoris et primorum lectorum unbedacht. Seine Reformulierung in aktueller Theoriesprache zeigt indes bis heute zentrale Funktionen für die Interpretationstheorie und -praxis auf.

Present understandings of hermeneutics around 1800 usually refer to author related aspects of interpretation solely. This, however, ignores the concept of interpretation of the sensus auctoris et primorum lectorum, which used to be well-known besides the more common kinds of senses. The reformulation of this concept in current terminology can still elucidate important functions for the theory and practice of interpretation.

This chapter investigates the specific philological practice of textual criticism and explores how this highly valued methodology was adopted by Jewish scholars working in the German-speaking world of the nineteenth century as part of the modernizing intellectual movement of Wissenschaft des Judentums. It explores how this movement depended on specific methodological engagement with a classical past. In particular, it focuses on how one leading rabbi and scholar, Zacharias Fraenkel (1801-1875), studied Greek philology in order to redraft Christian supersessionist historiography, which in the nineteenth century was composing a particular but profoundly distorting historical account of early Judaism, based on new philological methods. Fraenkel used the new historical philology of the 19th-century German and Central European university to create a theologically-laden account of ancient Jewish society, not as a dying religion but as a vital creative culture.

Abstract
A letter from Alexander von Humboldt to the philologist Friedrich August Wolf dated January 3, 1817, contains new details on the origin of the plant geographical treatise De distributione geographica plantarum secundum coeli temperiem et altitudinem  montium prolegomena (1817). The Hellenist Karl Benedikt Hase assisted Humboldt in composing  the Latin text. In this short paper, we publish Humboldt’s letter to Wolf for the first time and conclude with a plea for  a precise and complete translation of the Prolegomena into German.

Résumé
Une lettre d’Alexander von Humboldt au philologue Friedrich August Wolf, datée du 3 janvier 1817, contient de nouveaux détails sur l’origine du traité phytogéographique De distributione geographica plantarum secundum coeli temperiem et altitudinem montium  prolegomena (1817). L’helléniste Karl  Benedikt Hase a aidé Humboldt  à  composer le texte latin. Dans ce court article, nous publions pour la première fois la lettre de Humboldt à Wolf et concluons par un plaidoyer pour une traduction précise et complète des Prolegomena en allemand.

Ein Brief Alexander von Humboldts an den Philologen Friedrich August Wolf vom 3. Januar 1817 enthält Neues zur Entstehung der pflanzengeographischen Schrift De distributione geographica  plantarum secundum coeli temperiem et altitudinem  montium prolegomena (1817). Der Gräzist Karl Benedikt Hase unterstützte Humboldt  beim Verfassen des  lateinischen Textes. In der Miszelle veröffentlichen wir den Brief  Humboldts an Wolf zum ersten Mal und schließen mit dem Plädoyer für eine zuverlässige und vollständige Übersetzung der Prolegomena ins Deutsche.
