Objective: To analyze the 3-dimensional relationships of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) within the temporal stem using anatomic dissection and to study the surgical application. Methods: Ten postmortem human hemispheres (5 right, 5 left) were dissected using the Klingler fiber dissection technique. The 3-dimensional relationships of the IFOF with different landmarks of the temporal stem, insula, and temporal lobe were analyzed and measured. Results: An average distance of 10.9 mm (range, 8–15 mm) was observed between the limen insulae and the anterior edge of the IFOF under the inferior limiting sulcus of the insula. This anterior one-third of the temporal stem is crossed by the uncinate fasciculus. The IFOF crosses the posterior two-thirds of the temporal stem, in the space between the posterior limit of the uncinate fasciculus and the lateral geniculate body. Whether high-cholesterol diets (HCD) induce a high incidence of memory deficits in diabetes requires to be established; if so, whether they induce impairments of memory acquired in the pre-diabetic stage as well as in the diabetic stage also needs to be elucidated, and part of the related mechanisms involved in this dysfunction should be determined. The mice were grouped into: normal mice fed normal diets (NN), diabetic mice fed normal diets (DN), normal mice fed HCD (NH), and diabetic mice fed HCD (DH). Animals were subjected to Morris water maze testing: 1) Learning in the pre-diabetic stage and memory retrieval in the diabetic stage; 2) Learning and memory retrieval in the diabetic stage. The present studies sought to determine the concentrations of endogenous kynurenic acid (KYNA) and to measure the activity of kynurenine aminotransferases (KAT) I and II in the discrete brain regions of 3- and 6-month old WAG/Rij rats, a genetic model of absence epilepsy. Analogues experiments were performed using age-matched ACI rats, which served as a non-epileptic control. The age-dependent increase in KYNA concentration in the frontal cortex of WAG/Rij rats was considerably reduced in comparison to what was found in ACI rats. Consequently, the concentration of KYNA in the frontal cortex of epileptic rats was significantly lower than in non-epileptic controls. There were no such strain differences in other brain regions. The levels and cellular localization of mRNA for complement C1q and C3 were examined by RNA gel blot and nonradioactive in situ hybridization in the frontal cortex of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and age-matched controls. We found that the hybridization signal for C1q mRNA was markedly increased (approx. 3.5-fold) in the frontal cortex of AD patients compared to that in age-matched controls. In contrast to previous reports we also found that the levels of C3 mRNA, although well expressed, did not differ significantly between AD cases and age-matched controls. Nonradioactive in situ hybridization using digoxigenin-labeled riboprobes revealed that transcripts coding for both C1q and C3 were closely associated with neurons. These results support the hypothesis that complement could play a role in neuronal degeneration which has been observed in the brain of AD patients.
