Codesign

Gift exchange is a repetitive behaviour of everyday life. We give and receive gifts during many rituals and social practices, which are both pre-determined and arranged to happen in a specific time (e.g. anniversaries, Mother’s day, graduations, weddings), or ad-hoc, like when we buy a souvenir for a friend to share feelings or to build up social networks. Theodor Adorno (1951/2005) describes the pleasure of giving and argues that “real giving had its joy in imagining the joy of the receiver” (p. 42). Echoing the words of Lacan and Hegel, Dilnot (1993) underlines the
recognition as the most desired want, and therefore, the thing that the receiver gets besides the gift-object. “The object, no matter what its mundanity, is like a collective gift: it is issued for all of us, and its function or work is gift like in that its form embodies recognition of our concrete needs and desires” (p. 58). So, through recognition, a gift can act as a tool to indirectly improve human-to-human interaction.

This paper details the development of an interview toolkit designed for research with children dealing with chronic illness, aimed at discovering information about their daily routine, and what barriers they experience as a result of their condition.
Because of the challenges in working with children, especially children with chronic illness, traditional interview methods may be ineffective in soliciting authentic information regarding their needs and desires. Alternative methods must be used to elicit their input. The methods explored for this research propose an “interview toolkit”, based on methods used in child psychology and play therapy.
The toolkit’s aim is to gather information regarding the children’s aspirational needs and desires. This data could then then inform the development of future technologies aimed at enabling them to mitigate the stigmatization associated with chronic illness, as well as empower them with tools to monitor changes in their health.

Abstract: Design exploration research refers to various interaction design research practices that explore tensions issued from the interplay of science, technology, culture and society. Most of them explicitly trigger discussions and debates in the audience, for instance “critical design”, which raised the interest of members of design research communities. However its generalization suffers from a lack of shareable methodology. This paper aims at clarifying it practically and theoretically.
We claim that these practices trigger people’s reactions using a specific narrative strategy which provoke an “uncanny feeling”. By producing “uncanny enough” artefacts that embed a subtle entanglement of familiarity and unfamiliarity, designers can elicit responses from viewers. First, a review of literature on critical design texts presents the “uncanny balance” as being a recurrent design principle for the creation of these artefacts. We then present an exemplary case study produced by one of the authors, exploring communication technology—called Dog&Bone. Using classical rhetoric, we present a theoretical overview of the project. The outcome consists of a conceptual framework based on the narrative dimension of the uncanny plus the rhetorical dimension (composed of three elements: legitimacy, emotions, argumentation). We conclude that Design is a form of communication between designers and their audience.

Para que una persona o un grupo de personas puedan tomar decisiones con relación al espacio que habiten es necesario, en primer lugar, que estén informados. Necesitan conocer a fondo el lugar en el que se construye, además del funcionamiento, manejo y financiación de la construcción. En un proceso participativo las personas se informan, dialogan, colaboran, estudian y valoran alternativas. Pueden, en síntesis, negociar y decidir. Ser parte del proceso les ayuda a tomar conciencia, involucrarse y comprometerse con el espacio construido. Un proceso participativo es, por tanto, un proceso educativo y democrático. La participación puede verse con un proceso educativo, de compartir conocimientos. Cada cual aprende y enseña de lo que sabe. Según el educador brasileño Paulo Freire " …la participación, en cuanto ejercicio de la voz, de tener voz, de asumir, de decidir en ciertos niveles de poder, en cuanto al derecho de ciudadanía se halla en relación directa, necesaria, con la práctica educativo-progresiva… " [1] Participar implica, en consecuencia, tener voz, opinar, emitir un juicio relacionado a un asunto particular. Un discurso es cuestionado, puesto en tela de juicio, y puede ser modificado, convirtiéndose en un producto que no es de una sola persona sino de varias. Por tanto, en los procesos participativos se igualan las estructuras de poder, todos son educadores y todos son educados. Estos procesos se relacionan con la práctica educativo-progresiva ya que el conocimiento es construido por varios agentes, contrario a la práctica educativa tradicional en la cual existe un agente activo que posee todas las respuestas y agentes pasivos que se limitan a escuchar y recibir la información. Es por ello que participar es ser parte de un proceso, la construcción de un argumento que permite alcanzar un consenso mediante un diálogo.

Profound transformations in residential practices are emerging in Europe as well as throughout the urban world. They can be observed in the unfolding diversity of residential architecture and spatially restructured cities. The complexity of urban and societal processes behind these changes requires new research approaches in order to fully grasp the significant changes in citizens' lifestyles, their residential preferences, capacities and future opportunities for implementing resilient residential practices. The international case studies in this book examine why ways of residing have changed as well as the meaning and the significance of the social, economic, political, cultural and symbolic contexts. The volume brings together an interdisciplinary range of perspectives to reflect specifically upon the dynamic exchange between evolving ways of residing and professional practices in the fields of architecture and design, planning, policy-making, facilities management, property and market. In doing so, it provides a resourceful basis for further inquiries seeking an understanding of ways of residing in transformation as a reflection of diversifying residential cultures. This book will offer insights of interest to academics, policy-makers and professionals as well as students of urban studies, sociology, architecture, housing, planning, business and economics, engineering and facilities management.

The concepts of embodiment and embodied learning, deeply rooted in theories of embodied cognition, are gaining traction in the field of education. New and affordable educational technologies (e.g., motion-based technologies, AR, VR) enable researchers and practitioners to include more gestures and body movements into their learning designs. Yet, while technology-enhanced embodied learning shows positive results during controlled trials in laboratory settings or one-to-one interventions in special classrooms or units, findings are dissimilar when relevant implementations are conducted in mainstream school classrooms. This paper presents the first stage of a design-based research study aiming at implementing an orchestration strategy for technology-enhanced embodied learning, guided by an already published conceptual framework on classroom orchestration. With this study we aim to spark the dialog on classroom orchestration strategies for the successful enactment of technology-enhanced embodied learning in the classroom, highlighting the essential need to consider learning design as it is not a simple process to shift laboratory success to real world learning.

Citizen participation is a valuable resource in redefining and democratizing urban space. In urban regeneration projects, it fosters engagement by the community and integration among different forms of city urbanization, such as formal and informal areas, i.e. slums. Despite the potentialities of participatory processes, usually the plurality of actors involved challenges in the development of projects. From this perspective, one of the most critical issues is the articulation of their actions in terms of time. Actually, the difference in background, role and motivation between the participating actors can result in temporal misfits that hinder the implementation of actions. Thus, this paper explores the temporal dimension of community-based participatory design projects. Through action research, undertaken in a Brazilian context, we found out three different types of temporal misfits that can occur in this kind of project. Reflecting on them using concepts from project management and participatory design theory, we identified four contextual time factors that have to be considered to deal with timing challenges and to strengthen this practice.

This report summarises the co-design process that was undertaken in early 2020 towards the formation of a new Service Model for Personality Disorders in Western Australia.

Kelly Clark and Karen Wellington were engaged to facilitate a co-design process to systematically engage people with lived experience, carers and family members and clinicians in the development
of a service model for personality disorders. The purpose of this document is to report back on the co-design process, the findings that emerged and the changes that were suggested for the service
model.

The initial ‘design question’ was to seek development of a state-wide, beyond-clinical model of service for all personality disorders in Western Australia. The assumption of the question was tested,
as all design questions are, through the co-design process. When this had been examined through the co-empathise, co-discover, and the co-define stages, the renewed Problem Definition was:
“How do we make a system work for people with personality disorders - with an emphasis on continuity of philosophy rather than specific treatments?”.
During the co-design process, strengths, weaknesses and possible improvements of the lived experience, carer, clinical and non-clinical professional experience were identified. For lived experience individuals and carers, what current works is: patience, empathy, compassion and
validation from others, an increased understanding of PD, peer support, stable relationships and practical needs being met. What doesn’t work, is the lack of fit with the current array of available treatments. What is needed, is more empathy, compassion, validation and understanding, increased reliability of the system, more personalised and accessible services that give choice and agency, and more support for families and carers. For clinical and non-clinical professionals, what currently
works is professional training, increased understanding and support for reflective practice. What doesn’t work is a lack of knowledge leading to fear and stigma of BPD and burnout. What is needed is more opportunities, time and space for continued training, development and reflective practise, and for all treatments on offer to be evidence-based. For all, what is needed is more personalised and tailored approaches, and a systemic assumption (ie, from clinicians, bosses, peers, and
consumers) that each person is doing the best they can with what they have.

During the co-design process, a ‘prototype’ was created, in the form of a set of Narrative Cards that described potential key principles, features and elements of a future service model. The key principles, features and elements that are described in the Narrative Cards, arose from the
‘empathise’ and ‘discover’ phases of the co-design process. Thus the Narrative Cards developed through this co-design process are the consensus points of hundreds and hundreds of data points
collected throughout the process. The feedback gathered on the cards during Workshop 3 show additional data relating to the iteration of the model presented in the cards. The feedback from the Design Team on the Narrative Cards captures where there are agreements and differences between various stakeholders’ needs, aspirations, visions and ideas and the evidence base for a service model. The Narrative Cards describe points of reference for continuing the design process in
developing a system which works for people with personality disorder in Western Australia.

Based on the Narrative Card set, and the feedback provided, the following elements for a future
service model were most strongly prioritised:

● A philosophy of care that is co-developed and used by all services in the State. This philosophy of care enabled each patient/consumer to have services within the system tailored to them, rather than them feeling the need to tailor themselves to the system.
● Improvements to the primary care response
● Clinicians and non-clinical professionals being given time, space and support for self-reflection
For the Project Reference Group, together with the funding and facilitating bodies, to fully and practically answer the question posed in the Problem Definition, an implementation strategy will need to be designed and systematically implemented. It is recommended that the above elements to a future service model be prioritised in the next steps, and the elements within all 30 Narrative Cards be considered. In summary, this will need to be the beginning of a hope filled journey to a
time when everyone in WA is able to receive support in relation to personality disorders.

Note on Scope
During the co-design process the co-design facilitators raised the matter of the enormous scope of the initial co-design question (changes to the state-wide service model for all personality disorders). This report discusses a co-design process that involved predominantly those from the Perth metropolitan area, and predominantly in relation to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Design methods and processes are now commonly used across disciplines as an approach to gain deeper and more connected understanding within complex or wicked problems. However, little research exists on the use of Design to facilitate and grow interdisciplinary research culture within higher education institutes. This paper discusses how and why Design methods were used to create an interdisciplinary research culture in a newly emergent and rapidly evolving higher education environment. It uses a case study of a teaching orientated higher education institute, now moving towards Technological University status, and seeking to create an Interdisciplinary research culture. It discusses the process of using Design to create a unifying research identity, Design methods in mapping and framing of research landscapes, designing dissemination platforms, and Co-designing future research policy for the institute.

The present article proposes to investigate possible futures for the design through a proximal and dialogical ap- proach between design and democracy. In this way, we begin with the letter “Stand Up for Democracy”, written by Manzini and Margolin. Thus we seek to understand the foundations of the concept of Design as Democracy, pro- posed by the mentioned authors. We seek a relationship between the structures of democratic models and design practices. For these reasons, we have opened up a dialogue on codesign as a possible methodological alternative for a democratic design, more comprehensive, horizontal and open for all. Providing a fertile ground where collective creativity can be used as a form of collaboration and solving common problems is mirrored in design as democracy. For this resonates with the creation of a more inclusive and sustainable world for the future generation.

Every city, town, village and neighbourhood are home to shared community spaces, buildings and amenities that play a fundamentally important role in the lives of local people. Spaces such as parks, recreational areas and community buildings have significant social purpose and encourage integration. This research investigates community engagement in the consultation process. The study proposes that for the development of shared community spaces public consultation requires a shift to more collaborative approaches with the local people. A new method to build effective dialogue to encourage a shared understanding of places, their challenges and their potential is developed. A methodology is established that provides participatory design interaction between, and within, the local people and urban design professionals using play as a design tool.

The Localism Act (2011) aimed to facilitate the devolution of decision making from central government to local councils and local communities. One of the measures within the Act was to consult local communities before submitting planning proposals (2011:13). The levels and methods of public consultation vary with the requirements of the project and despite the importance of engaging local communities, the success with which the local community is engaged varies greatly. This variation in the success of the public consultation process motivates this study to investigate the opportunity to develop a co-design framework that uses symbolic object play for co-creating shared community spaces, for use by architects, designers, consultation companies and local councils.

Using three case studies this research explores how the nature of shared space allows a collaborative playful approach to successfully engage local communities in the design of their future environments. The case studies chosen are recreational, community spaces situated in the UK. Insights from these case studies, supported by the examination of existing research, investigate practical ways that the findings could be disseminated into a design framework for others to draw from. The conclusions of this research support a ‘Play as a Design Tool’ user guide and an animated illustration of the process. Presented as part of the PhD exhibition, the research practice delivers resources for the target users to efficiently support them to utilise the methodology, thereby inviting wider implementation of this new model for codeveloping shared community spaces.

Many fashion theorists have approached fashion as a form of sartorial ‘code’, signifying meaning and being a system of communication or a specific visual language. From this reading of fashion, semiotic systems of codes define fashion, and consumers learn to decipher the meanings projected through the system. Among fashion practitioners however, the analytical tool of semantic codes does not seem to have attracted much attention, and there are only a few examples where theory and practice share a common applicable approach. Yet, a literal usage of the concept might offer new action spaces for practitioners, as it could be hybridized with another practice of coding: programming. This was examined during a design workshop the author held at Gallery Room 103 in Auckland in Spring 2009, called Fashion Fianchettos. The workshop used live draping and algebraic topology to experiment with new ways of disseminating fashion, as a set of mathematical functions and minimal codes of new draping...

La bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice est appelée à se transformer en un nouvel espace citoyen, technologique et ludique. Deux axes de développement complémentaires sont envisagés pour ce projet : une bibliothèque spécifiquement dédiée aux adolescents et un laboratoire d’innovation ouvert à tous.

Une approche de codesign a engagé différents publics dans l’élaboration d’hypothèses de concept et le développement de prototypes pour organiser et aménager l’espace Saint-Sulpice. Des adolescents, des usagers ou représentants d’usagers de la bibliothèque, des intervenants d’organismes communautaires et des experts en création, en création numérique ou en jeu ont contribué à imaginer la bibliothèque du futur. Cette démarche de
conception participative a pris la forme d’une résidence d’idéation d’une semaine avec 19 adolescents et de quatre ateliers de codesign auprès de 64 personnes au total.

Ce processus participatif a généré des idées riches et foisonnantes à propos de la vocation de l’incubateur Saint-Sulpice, de son offre d’activités et de services, de ses propriétés formelles, des équipements requis ou encore des ressources nécessaires. Elles sont traduites dans 4 maquettes présentant des scénarios élaborés par des ados et 17 concepts issus d’échanges et de compromis entre les participants aux ateliers de codesign.

Si ces 21 propositions de concept expriment des besoins et des aspirations de citoyens, d’usagers et d’experts, elles ne sont pas de simples listes de souhaits. Ces propositions incarnent des expériences souhaitées dont se dégagent différentes qualités : celles d’un lieu convivial, entremetteur, malléable, socialement structurant, spécialisé, spectaculaire
et tourné vers le projet. Ce sont ces critères de design qui peuvent guider la transformation de la bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice et mener le projet à une autre étape.

This research investigates emotional durability of clothing through the lens of a designer-maker practice. The current discourse on fashion futures urgently recognizes that a deeper understanding of the behavioural drivers behind long-term use of clothing is critical in order to move beyond symptom-based solutions to fashion and sustainability such as closed loop recycling and technological innovation. A considerable body of work exists on design strategies for emotional durability. However, empirical evidence that examines their relationship to users’ everyday experiences with clothing is missing.

I set to remedy this gap through my own designer-maker practice that investigated women’s routine relationships with the clothes in their wardrobes. Focusing specifically on what matters in everyday use, I examine the possible applications of emotionally durable design in fashion design and making. This approach challenges the imperative of disposability in fashion and foregrounds instead a long-term value-creation enabled through the continuous use of familiar clothes.
The thesis structure has three interrelated elements that outline the linear narrative of the research as well as the conceptual and methodological developments. The first part of the thesis outlines the global challenges in fashion production and consumption. The second part introduces and applies ethnographic methods to understanding the sensory wardrobe, and the third concluding stage includes the findings and practical application in the One Thing Collection. Conceptually, the thesis moves from comprehending the macro towards a practical application in the micro.

The methodology employs a combination of practical explorations through designer-maker practice with in-depth wardrobe conversations. Adopting methods from narrative enquiry and sensory ethnography, ten women aged between 29-69 were interviewed in their homes. Rich imagery of clothes in use and extended excerpts of wardrobe conversations are essential components of the thesis ethos, these became framed as individual portraits of each of the women. It is stressed that these portraits are significant to the research findings presented in the thesis; the portraits are presented in the Appendices as the nature of sensory ethnography results in details of visual and textual data beyond the confines of the thesis.

The findings show that designable characteristics of garments such as shape, style, fit, colour, material, details, or easy care are all significant in contributing to a garment’s emotional durability. However,
a truly long-lasting relationship with a piece of clothing results from a complex dynamic between its design, the mode of its acquisition, expectations, fluctuation of personal circumstances, and each woman’s perspective on the relationship between continuity and change. The key insights are articulated through the four themes identified in thematic cross-case analysis of the wardrobe conversations: (1) Enablers, (2) Sensory experiences, (3) Longing and Belonging, and lastly (4) Layering. Each theme is also interpreted through the process of making a corresponding everyday garment that captures the essence of the women’s narratives.

This research contributes to the current discourse on emotional durability in fashion design and making and provides new contextual data on user experience of clothing; [See Chapter 7.3 Contribution to knowledge summarized, p. 300]. The research demonstrates that fashion design for emotional durability requires an empathic approach that readily embraces the complexity of everyday life as an opportunity, rather than a hindrance to creative expression. These conclusions are also now embodied in my studio practice with future development of the One Thing Collection that resulted from this thesis.

As food is an intrinsic part of everyday life, I argue the food system is one fundamental starting point from which to design balanced social, ecological and economic systems and change human behaviours towards a much-needed holistic worldview. I critique Western countries’ disconnected ways of relating to food, farming and community. Much of the imbalance has stemmed from the globalised, homogenous and capitalist food system (Escobar, 2018). The exploitative industrial economy has taken a toll on human and non-human health. The industrial food system is a micro example of the dehumanising effects of the economy, with its current mechanistic approaches to the production, distribution, consumption, representation and waste of food. The thesis addresses the design question: how can we transition from the industrial food system towards a convivial food system within a post-industrial context? This thesis draws on living systems and conviviality theory. I focus on Miller’s (1976) theory of living systems that describes the interrelationship between biological and social systems. I extend Illich’s (1973) theory of conviviality, which critiques the industrial productivity model and the dominance of professional elites. Illich emphasises the need to design a convivial system to encourage people to reconnect with hands-on skills, agriculture, connection to the body and control over their education. However there was little discussion from Illich on the practical ways to achieve this vision. This thesis explores Illich’s conviviality theory through the lens of living systems theory and uses this knowledge to implement seven food system design experiments based in Australian and European everyday life contexts. The combination of Illich’s and Millers theory and my own practical food systems design experiments led me to develop con viv theory. Con viv theory provides a practical framing for people to radically, equitably and interdependently redesign everyday life, with a particular focus on the food system. I propose three conviviality theorisations that are informed by con viv principles.

Firstly, the ‘convivial self’ proposes designers to adopt and embrace diverse and holistic worldviews to ensure that design is not part of the problem but rather part improving life for all. The convivial self proposes we are not living in a world of separation, but rather we are relational beings interconnected to each other and the natural world. Secondly, the ‘convivial food system’ presents a joyous, gastronomical, relational and ecological way to reimagine and connect to our food system and everyday life. Thirdly, the ‘convivial design’ conceptualisation shows relational and tactical design actions for both professional and lay designers. In particular I set out how the convivial design approach in everyday life can be adopted to empower and emancipate diverse groups of people ranging from those who feel disempowered by the industrial economic system, minority groups and people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Convivial design is diverse in its scope, enabling designers to implement local small-scale projects and larger educational and policy making programs. In a post-Covid-19 world, the convivial self, convivial food system and convivial design theories provide approaches for people to reimagine and redesign their lives. These theories present an alternative to the centralised industrial system which dominates everyday life elements such as food, agriculture, home making, learning, education and health. The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted human’s dependency on a flawed system that lacks resilience. This thesis proposes we can all design a
convivial lifestyle that embraces a holistic way of living, creating a connection to nature, our bodies, our communities, our land and our food system.

What can the creation of artificial habitats to replace old-growth forests tell us about the process, value and future of design? This chapter takes a concrete and provocative example and uses it to rethink design as a gradual, ecological action. To illustrate this understanding, the chapter begins with a description of a proposal to provide artificial habitats for wild animals such as birds, bats and invertebrates. The controversial idea to replace rapidly disappearing old-growth trees with artificial structures puts in doubt habitual assumptions about the clients, procedures and goals of design. This example is of relevance to all design because the need to provide artificial habitats to nonhumans will be increasingly common under the influence of such phenomena as global warming or urbanisation. … The invention of artificial structures in place of natural habitats is described in this chapter as an incitement that highlights the need for further research into values, participants and methods of design. This discussion concludes with a proposal for an attitude of modesty in the face of increasingly overwhelming volumes of information as well as in the presence of an even greater ignorance about the futures of nondeterministic, volatile and incompletely controllable natural systems. The dilemma of design in these conditions is in the tension between its remit to act and the uncertainty that inescapably underlies any creative endeavour.

Our journey to improving student’s library experience is a research project utilizing customer journey mapping as a tool to help us understand customer journey interactions with a service and to seek innovations and improvements in service delivery based on the newly proposed service.
Understanding students experience is critical to the delivery of value and key to achieving the objectives of the Library and Learning Resources towards customer service excellence. The customer journey mapping experiment would take a holistic approach towards embracing the core of service design discipline, design tools and methods to improve the output of the customer journey map and at the same time improve the understanding of the complex nature of customers (students) and their experiences at each touch point during a service life cycle.
It was identified that co-design practices could improve the outcome of the journey mapping process and so a set of co-design tools was designed and introduced in the mapping process as the methodology in this research. The tools would go on to broaden our understanding of the service context beyond specific touch points and or individual service areas and would also inspire the internal teams to look and innovate using alternative touch points as would be specified by the co-design.
The findings from this study would form the basis for the continuous development of ideas and discussion by the internal and cross-functional service teams tasked with service delivery and service quality assurance. The approach was necessary as the ideas generated from the mapping sessions formed part of the innovation action plan for a PROPOSED NEW SERVICE MODEL within the service areas being mapped.
The project highlights the benefits of co-design as the data generated would indicate that the entire process inspires and informs creativity and thinking (co-design thinking) towards the formation of new service concepts and improvements to enhance students’ experience as was the objective of our chosen methodology.

Risk assessment, by itself, does nothing to reduce risk or improve safety. It can only change outcomes by informing the design and management of effective risk control interventions. But current practice in healthcare risk management suffers from an almost complete lack of support for risk control. Il multiplo nelle sue relazioni con l’arte e l’industria è il punto di partenza per un’indagine sull’evoluzione del design del gioiello. Verso il superamento di un’obsoleta nozione di serialità industriale, la gioielleria contemporanea si contraddistingue come un ambito di ricerca fortemente innovativo, per la sua capacità di intendere l’oggetto attraverso nuove estetiche, significati e materiali, verso un’idea di multiplo singolare. La ricerca apre una prospettiva progettuale ad un gioiello pensato per un consumo non solo tangibile ma intellettuale, poiché dilata i suoi significati a un più ampio spettro di temi e finalità, come la sostenibilità, l’innovazione materico-tecnologica, le problematiche di natura politica e sociale che interessano la contemporaneità. Dal digitale al postdigitale, mescolando atomi e bits, anche il design del gioiello costruisce inediti scenari, dove software innovativi, scanner 3D, manipolazioni di materiali e contaminazioni transdisciplinari espandono i confini della ricerca.

A presente dissertação trata do design como estratégia de inovação social, através do entendimento do uso de suas metodologias para o desenvolvimento de tecnologias sociais. Investiga como metodologias de design, usadas na prática de projetos/ grupos produtivos/empreendimentos solidários com produção artesanal se tornam tecnologias sociais, e podem ser reaplicadas. Para tanto, foram realizados uma revisão bibliográfica sobre conceitos de inovação social, tecnologia apropriada, prática colaborativa, tecnologia social, sustentabilidade e codesign, dentre outros; um levantamento dos princípios e parâmetros de formação de tecnologias sociais; um estudo de casos múltiplos com análise de quatro grupos que trabalham a relação do design com o artesanato, incluindo como instrumentos de pesquisa questionário
online e entrevistas, mapeamento de iniciativas, análise dos dados com cruzamento de informações. Uma discussão acerca dos modelos metodológicos adotados pelas iniciativas dos quatro grupos se segue, e quadros comparativos são elaborados no intuito de dar visibilidade aos achados da pesquisa. O estudo verificou que no processo de inovação social o design contribui, dentre outras coisas, para a geração de tecnologias sociais visando uma melhor qualidade de vida das pessoas, desenvolvimento local e transformação social.

Design is a distinct form of practice with a typical focus on human aspirations for products, buildings, infrastructure, urban spaces, services and land use. As such, design affects all planetary environments, societies and the capabilities of individual humans. This chapter begins by establishing design as both a force responsible for the current situation and a primary concern of the future. Next, the chapter uses cities as a characteristic example of significantly modified habitats that are simultaneously biological and cultural. The cultures within such habitats combine the behaviours and traditions of many lifeforms. Consequently, the chapter argues that design approaches to the management of future habitats – conceptualised as ‘interspecies design’ – must engage with non-human as well as human cultures. This has implications for theoretical and practical engagements with the Anthropocene, pointing to the significance of design and the need for a transformation of design practices.

RESUMO: Este artigo pretende refletir por meio do cinema, especificamente por meio do filme colombiano O Abraço da Serpente (2015), recentemente indicado ao Oscar dentro da categoria Melhor filme estrangeiro, sobre a prática do design e sua relação com a antropologia. Buscamos, a partir da visão do Design Anthropology, explorar o que, como designers, podemos aprender do comportamento de um xamã, de um etnólogo e de um biólogo na Amazônia colombiana, na primeira metade do século XX, e ver como podemos trazer essas formas de atuar para os processos que vivemos hoje no nosso campo.Como um filme pode nos fazer pensar nosso papel como designers? Quais atitudes dos viajantes podemos aprender e de quais nos podemos apropriar para serem levadas à prática do design no nosso contexto? Podemos conseguir a partir delas um melhor processo com o grupo com que trabalhamos?

ABSTRACT: This article aims to reflect through cinema, specifically through the Colombian film Embrace of the Serpent (2015), recently nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film, on the practice of design and its relation to anthropology. We seek, from the Design Anthropology point of view, exploring what can we learn, as designers, from the behavior of a shaman, an ethnologist and a biologist in the Colombian Amazon, in the first half of the twentieth century, and see how we can bring these forms of work to the processes that we have today in our field. How can a movie make us think our role as designers? What travelers' attitudes can we learn and which ones can we appropriate to be taken to the practice of design in our context? —Software-defined Radio (SDR) is a programmable transceiver with the capability of operating various wireless communication protocols without the need to change or update the hardware. Progress in the SDR field has led to the escalation of protocol development and a wide spectrum of applications, with more emphasis on programmability, flexibility, portability, and energy efficiency, in cellular, WiFi, and M2M communication. Consequently, SDR has earned a lot of attention and is of great significance to both academia and industry. SDR designers intend to simplify the realization of communication protocols while enabling researchers to experiment with prototypes on deployed networks. This paper is a survey of the state-of-the-art SDR platforms in the context of wireless communication protocols. We offer an overview of SDR architecture and its basic components, then discuss the significant design trends and development tools. In addition, we highlight key contrasts between SDR architectures with regards to energy, computing power, and area, based on a set of metrics. We also review existing SDR platforms and present an analytical comparison as a guide to developers. Finally, we recognize a few of the related research topics and summarize potential solutions.

This PhD research project tackles youngsters’ role as citizens, by recognising them as experts of their own life experiences, capable of giving unique contributions and views on addressing certain issues related to their local and learning needs. The youngsters engaged in this process belong to the local community of Miragaia in Porto, coming from an elementary school with an age bracket between 12 and 16 years old.


Through a participatory action approach, the aim is to encourage youngsters’ self-empowerment through codesign practices. This is established by co-sharing and co-deciding conditions for the learning environment, co-creating the learning tools and discussing the learning process, through which young people can reflect upon their identities as learners within the school context and life-long trajectories.
 Since schools are the first window and practice of belonging to a wider society, there is a certain parallel drawn between active learning and active citizenship having in mind that students have the right and the duty in learning to learn by actively engaging in a democratic process within the school life and its local communities.


The researcher reflects upon school’s constraints and conditions to learn by deconstructing the possibilities for youngsters’ meaningful participation inside and outside of the classroom, endeavouring the pluralistic approach to a more participatory education.


In 2014, a long-term project in Miragaia school has been initiated as a case study of codesigning participatory practices with, for and by youth. In the first stage "warmUP", an ethnographic and participatory observation was conducted through voluntary weekly sessions that tackled the wellbeing of youth in the school context, their motivational drivers and awareness towards learning and participating in loco. The gathered results demonstrated the intergenerational gap in communication and understanding of certain terminology related to citizenship topic.


In the second phase, "buildUP", students continued participation in the weekly sessions in which they were invited to take ownership and co-manage implementation of initiatives of their own interest, such as the Christmas party and the tournament in football. After the winter break, Miragaia students created a community of practice with design students from the Árvore school located in the same area. Together they co-created a learning tool - visual dictionary "Ilustracionário, à minha maneira 1.0" - by reflecting upon their own levels of understanding of 23 concepts that associate with the topics of youth policy and civic participation and representing them visually through illustrations.


"play" is the last phase which was implemented in the classroom and the students were invited to reflect upon their motivation to learn, learning practice and their competencies of co-creating learning tools that can be used inside/outside of the classrooms.


The principles of codesigning learning processes are based on individual needs and nonhierarchical, voluntary, learner-centred, collaborative, transparent, experiential, experimental and flexible approaches.
 The data gathered through weekly sessions in the last three academic years is analysed and contributes to shaping a learning framework in active citizenship, as a recommendation of applying to codesign in facilitating learning with, for and by youth.

Ce logbook approfondit la question de la collaboration entre architectes et sociologues dans la conception d'espaces d'accueil et de soins destinés à des publics vulnérables : accueil de patients précaires, dans le cas de centres de santé à Molenbeek et Anderlecht (2017) ; accueil de migrants et réfugiés, dans le cas du hub humanitaire du Quartier Nord de Bruxelles (2019).

Coordonnés et rédigés par nos chercheurs, les logbooks Metrolab montrent l'application d'une approche de recherche interdisciplinaire à une situation urbaine donnée et visent à fournir aux acteurs de l'action publique et des politiques de la ville des outils testés par le Metrolab.

With the rise of the Internet, skills, patterns, and ideas are being shared more widely among people engaged in the crafts, which seems to break with some of the underlying assumptions about the lone genius craftsman. Much discourse about craft has been focused on the hands of the artisan, or the " tacit " knowledge used by the maker, but as crafters collaborate in a larger extent some other perspectives could be of use, especially since the surrounding environment seems to take a more active involvement in the production than the mere maker. Increasing Internet prevalence has made this even more obvious, as do-it-yourself instruction and the sharing of skills are abundant in craft forums online, blurring the borders between influences, makers, and situated modes of production. This article examines some concepts and metaphors by which some of the potentials of craft collaborations could be understood. Combining theories of cognition from super-organisms like ant colonies and their " bodyhood " with the " capabilities approach " of Amartya Sen and the concept of educational sloyd, the text builds an associative framework for a perspective on how collaborations actualize new craft capabilities. Avec la croissance de la complexité des systèmes sur puce, les méthodologies de conception ont eu tendance vers la réutilisation des IP cores qui ont été déjà conçus, pour accélérer le développement de nouveaux projets et assurer une haute performance tout en faisant un compromis qualité/prix. Certains concepteurs préfèrent de partager leurs IP cores en utilisant des licences open source, afin de contribuer à l'évolution de la méthodologie de la Reuse.
Dans ce cadre, le Cluster marocain de la microélectronique souhaite développer ses recherches dans le domaine de la conception matérielle libre, le projet qui a été proposé est de concevoir une plateforme numérique performante à faible coût à base de processeur OpenRISC 1200 et les IP cores de la communauté Opencores.
Avant de commencer le travail d'ingénierie et de conception, une étude des licences libres qui a été réalisée pour évaluer leurs impact sur l'utilisation commerciale des IP cores libres, ensuite une évaluation de la qualité, la difficulté d'utilisation et les performances des IP cores d'Opencores était essentielle avant de commencer la conception de la plateforme.
Cette plateforme intègre un ensemble d'IP cores de la communauté Opencores. Le fameux processeur OpenRISC 1200, le bus d'interconnexion WISHBONE, UART16550, ETHERNET, une mémoire on-chip et le module GPIO sont les modules de base qui constituent cette plateforme.
La partie logicielle de la plateforme est constituée d'un système d'exploitation  "Linux embarqué" qui a été porté pour l'architecture du processeur cible afin de faciliter le développement des applications. La chaine d'outils OpenRISC pour le développement logiciel a été installée et utilisée dans ce projet pour cross-compiler et déboguer les applications développées.
Dans ce projet, la plateforme FPGA utilisée est la Spartan3E Starter Board de la famille Xilinx équipée d'une puce XC3S500E, c'est une carte à faible coût, connue par sa grande flexibilité, dispose de ressources nécessaires pour la conception des applications embarquées.
La plateforme qui a été réalisée durant ce projet n'est que le commencement d'un grand projet du Cluster qui a pour but de réaliser une plateforme numérique très performante à base de ces IP cores et de contribuer fortement de son tour dans le mouvement du matériel libre.

In area Mediterranea, esistono progettualità che fanno coesistere la circular economy con aspirazioni etiche di egualitarismo. In queste realtà, la pratica del riuso trascende il solo aspetto produttivo e assurge a mezzo per rivalutare anche le potenziali abilità delle persone in condizioni di vulnerabilità. All’interno di una più ampia riflessione teorica sull’etica del progetto, l’inclusione sociale e la cultura della diversità, questo breve contributo è volto a indagare e, dunque, portare a conoscenza casi emergenti che potranno essere presi come modelli per celebrare nuove forme di manifattura, circolari, mutue e popolari.

In the Mediterranean area, there are projects that make the circular economy coexist with ethical aspirations of egalitarianism. In these realities, the practice of reuse transcends only the productive aspect and becomes a way to re-evaluate the potential skills of people in vulnerable conditions. Within a wider theoretical reflection about the ethics of the project, social inclusion and culture of diversity, this short contribution aims to investigate and, therefore, bring to light emerging cases that can be taken as models to celebrate new forms of manufacturing, circular, mutual and popular.
