Agile and Lean Software Development

The concept of DevOps is a hot topic in recent years. DevOps is a collection of methods for developers and collaborates to deliver software and services rapidly, reliably and with higher quality. The concept of 'lean' defines a kind of the operation in the Toyota Production System. Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) are one of the important practices in the software development. CI is one of the agile software development practice that involves automation and frequent integration of the software changes. DevOps and CD are another subset of the agile. DevOps could be extended with agile methods and by using patterns and practices it helps to improve collaboration between development and operation teams. Both development models of agile and lean are similar to in terms of goals by focusing on the customers and responding to their needs in a rapid method. Agile software development focuses on the software development function, but Lean Thinking has a very explicit focus on the end-to-end process. In this review article, the principle and practices of DevOps, reasons for its usage, challenges of DevOps, the relationship of DevOps with agile are studied.

We intend to highlight the key features and future directions in the research community of waterfall, agile and lean
process paradigms from 2001 to 2014, exemplifying how research on waterfall, agile and lean has progressively
increased in the past fourteen years by inspecting articles and papers from scientific and standard publications. Survey
materialized in three fold process. Firstly, the authors have investigated on the amalgamation of waterfall, agile and then
proceeded with agile-lean. Secondly, they have performed a structural analysis on different author's prominent
contributions in the form of tabulation by categories and graphical representation. Thirdly, they huddle with conceptual
similarity in the field and also impart a summary table on all process models. In the context of agile, monitoring
bottlenecks such as business values and high speed projects, beyond the capacity performed into an organization
(CMMI levels) is not clearly defined. But by incorporating lean and agile principles, high quality products can be
produced with low cost and desired speed can be achieved in the delivery of projects with optimal capacity. Further, it
delivers conclusions by conferring future research directions in the field of software engineering paradigm, such as
reducing errors early in the software development process, combining manufacturing principles with lean or agile or
both rather than a solo model for providing high quality results. One such type of principle called Poka-Yoke (PY) is a
mistake proofing technique used in product design and improves the software development process by integrating
software engineering paradigm. A new approach for implementation of Poka-Yoke method in software performance
engineering is proposed.

Although agile methods in their purest way fit several companies, it has been a challenge to perform them in environments with distributed teams developing large software applications. Contractual items, for projects under development for external organizations, introduce additional complexities for pure agilebased approaches. The majority of global teams and companies use hybrid development practices that combine different development methods and frameworks. This research provides results from an empirical field study on how the hybrids practices are adopted in Global Software Development (GSD) projects. A systematic literature review was conducted to capture the status of combining agile with plan-driven in GSD projects. The results were limited to peer-reviewed conference papers or journal articles, published between 2001 and 2020. The present study selected 37 papers from five different bibliographic databases. In the end, 16 practices were summarized and described as hybrid by GSD projects. Based on the findings of this study, the authors can conclude that the contribution of this study is not only limited to identifying how hybrid development practices are applied in GSD but also allowing that practitioners can have a basis for adapting their development methods.

The dissipation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has already taken on pandemic proportions, affecting over 100 countries in a couple of weeks. The evolution of the disease and its economic impact is highly uncertain, which brings challenges for newly created software companies. Software startups are companies that create innovative software products and services in a dynamic and fast-growing market. Agile Software Methods aims to enable startups in responding to uncertainty caused by Covid-19. This paper investigates the impact of Covid-19 in a real software startup context to understand how they have reacted against uncertainties caused by Covid-19. As a research methodology, action research within Di2Win, a Brazilian software startup, has been applied. The study was carried out throughout six sprints, during the quarantine. Practices employed to mitigate threats while simultaneously allowing teams to remain open to opportunities and challenges are detailed. This paper shares lessons learned that could help agile software startups improve their way of work in an uncertain environment caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

—We present a model for supporting scoping decisions that is based on an analysis of the ROI for a given feature. Employing a ROI threshold value for making scoping decisions, the utility of the model was investigated using data from a single large project and identified a group of outlying features responsible for a disproportionate wasted investment. These initial results are promising and indicate that further investigation and validation efforts are warranted.
