YES!!

Thank you Dansdad!! U were such a great help.

And Scolls.. Thank you for those pictures!! To tell u the truth.. those pictures kind of remind me of home (in a sick, sad way). I live really close to the "bottom" of Oakland, the smallest, worst part of Oakland. This area has been run down since the majority of the ports closed in the late 70's early 80's, which is rumored to have caused some (if not most) of Oaklands crime.

ByDand: I thank you so much for that link to those beautiful pics. I need those too. They were like the city that i am used to. Beatuiful in its own way. I can truely appreciate a place with history like that.

Being so close to oakland, i must say, that desolate sidewalks, without trees and green grass are kind of common (and there isn't a lack of rain as an excuse).

In short, I greatly appreciate both of those sets of pictures. I NEEDED to see the slummy part, and the good part. If i wanted to see the good parts, I woulda just google image searched. Its was tho slummy pics that I was in need of in an odd way.

I wanted to know what EXACTLY I was getting into. I think im greatly prepared now... Even excited.

THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

Sault Sainte Marie

who wants to listen to a visitor from the Detroit area try to discribe any place in Michigan. First off once they get north of I69 they think they are up north.

Seems I remember Kewadin being in the Soo too, ain't all bad people around here go to Mt Pleasant all the time Even into Winsor but they are trying to make that more difficult.

I don't seem to remember a town in the world I have visited that didn't have the poorer sections. Ever seen the slums of old Siagon? How about Hunts Point New York. Personally I think the whole city of Philly PA. is in the slums.

I've been to the Soo in the summer but to many rude tourist for my taste. I'll take the winter time. I used to live for the Soo 500, although we stayed a bit more west at Hulbert.

Al

Not all the Soo, but 90% of the photos are from there. Made me want some of Clydes fries and a C Burger again. One of the few towns I have lived in that I would gladly go back and live there again.

Was it you that said that Antlers place has good food? Looks pretty cool, may have to go there if I am up that way this summer.

I don't remember actually if I did or not. I know someone else mentioned the Antlers on this thread. It is worth the stop if you are in the Soo. I used to live a few blocks away and was in there all the time during the summer months. I worked for the Soo Locks Campground and the owner of the campground was friends with the owner of the Antlers so we went back and forth a LOT. Ate a lot of food out of that place over my High School years.

As a Sault native I couldn't help giving a chuckle at this thread. I'd recommend The Indo-China Gardens, Guido's Pizza and the Palace for Sault restaurants. Antler's is ok, but they changed management a few years ago, its not as good anymore in my opinion. My grandparents swear by Frank's place downtown.
Yes, its true that there isn't much to do in the Sault, unless your into winter sports or hunting. There is a small theater that puts on little productions and sometimes the University puts on some interesting things though. There are also plenty of cool bars.

Here are some more pictures for the curious

Thank you. A nice summer day and good lighting makes a big difference. I think one of those freighters is permanently parked on the Ontario side, though it could be a different one.

l realize this thread is knocking on 6 years old, but I still feel compelled to comment, if only to say that skolls sounds like he had his little heart broken into a million pieces by someone in the Soo. That's the only possible explanation for such hatred of a city.
By the way, you would think that pretty much EVERY American could appreciate a city like Sault Ste. Marie, if for no other reason than its historical significance. I mean, it's the 2nd oldest city in ALL of America, and only behind St. Augustine, Florida by like 2 years. I'm relying solely on memory here, but I believe St. Augustine was founded in 1666 and The Soo was founded in 1668. Don't hold me to that, but I do know for certain that the Soo only trails St. Augustine in age.
Give the town a break. If it LOOKS a little old and dreary...it's because it IS a little old and dreary.
Between the Soo Locks, the summer tourism, the college, the bridge to the bigger Soo, the historical aspect, and the people themselves, I would say Sault St. Marie has a LOT going for it.
Yes, there are bigger, more exciting places in America (and even in the U.P., for that matter) than the Soo, that's for sure. But not everybody is interested in bigger or more exciting. Not to even mention the fact that "exciting" is a VERY relative term. What does it for one person, doesn't necessarily do it for another.

I will say this about the U.P. (in general): I wouldn't trade one square acre of the worst town up there for ALL of Detroit. Does that mean Detroit is the worst place in America? No. It simply means it is to ME. Although, you'd find a LOT more people to agree with me about Detroit than people who agree that Sault St. Marie is the worst place in America. That much isn't even up for debate.
