I'm doing a project on these area's of Los Angeles County, all though it's mainly demographics. I see Watts is around 40% black and 60% hispanic, but I can't find info on the three housing projects(Nickerson, Jordans, and Imperial Courts). If anybody could give me crime stats, demographics or any other info you think is important about these area's if'd be helpful. As for Compton, I know it to is around 40% black and 60% hispanic, but I'd like to know about where the blacks are and where hispanics live at. The last subject is, gangs, I know some people might think all I'm looking is for the negatives of these communities, but this for a criminology class, so that's my reason, but anyway's what are the gang demographics in both area's, gang population for the projects would be REALLY helpful. I have searched the internet, but you can't ask questions about the info there, and here it's more personal and I can ask my own questions.
Thanks A lot, as any help would be appreciated.

First off, if you are yet another person who is going to pull together some statistics and throw together some hypotheses about South LA County without actually going there, looking around, and talking to people, then I reject you entirely. Way too much has been written from afar by clueless people.

Start off with city-data.com of course, since you are already here. Watts is in the city of LA, in the LAPD's South East Community. On the LAPD website, in the South East community section, you can find crime maps and statistics. official website of THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT

Compton is policed by the LA Sheriff's Department. You can go to their website for some stats. Compton Police Station is in LASD Region II. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Home page

But seriously, if you write this paper without at least walking around Watts Towers and Gateway Towne Center, I will hunt you down and give you a wedgie.

there's a poster on this board by the name of "southcentral" who has provided a lot of detailed information about crime and gangs in compton, watts, and other communities in the south central region. the guy apparently lives on the westside of compton and says that he has come into frequent contact with local gangbangers over the years. he also seems to have a good sense of what's going on in the housing projects of the area.

check out his comments in the following posts:

you might want to send a direct message to him if you have more questions. i'm not sure if he checks this site anymore, but it's worth a shot. he seems to be as knowledgeable as anyone on this site about the information you're seeking.

btw, i know you're new to this site, but next time you should use the search function before posting. in many instances, new posters' questions have already been answered in previous threads.

I see where you're coming from, but this is going to be stats basically, and I don't intend on contributing to any stereotypes regarding Watts and Compton weather it's the city itself or the people of the city, because where I live, people of my ethnicity are often stereotyped as gang banger, wife killers, beating there kids, violent etc. That pisses me off and I don't want to do that. But unfortunately I won't be able to go down to South Central.

Checked him out, seems like he hasn't been on in a while, but I'll send him a message.

Thanks so far.

Just to post up some stats I found

Jordan Downs
Black 60%
Hispanic 40%

Nickersons
Black 47%
Hispanic 53%

I wonder what sort of effect this has on the gang's, sharing turf with the Hispanic gang that may have formed there recently, decrease of membership, especially in the Nickersons where Blacks are not a majority, but other then some cultural differences I don't think the non gang banger citizens have any problems with each other.

Wow! This is ironic, I was taking a break from doing a school assignment and decided to check this site out since I hadn't been on in a while. Funny enough I find this thread. Anyway, whatever you want to know just ask and I'll help you out as much as I can.

What are the schools like? Is education laughed at? I ask because of the new "nationalized standard" of education is starting to become implemented in schools. With the powers to be determining what that standard is? I wonder how a median of education affects those schools that have exceptionally high standards to those scoring on the lower end ? Not saying watts is the low end but I feel comfortable by the amount of gang members making things besides education a priority to do poorly. I also wonder about how many households are single parent as well as what moral standards do they have? Christin, catholic, budhist, atheist and so on.
