I was searching for cities with cheap rent and came upon Orange Grove. What is it and the surrounding area like in terms of crime (safe for a woman to be out alone late at night)? What are job opportunities like in the nearby area for someone with a bachelor's degree? Would I have any problem going about town as an obvious lesbian (in appearance, I mean)?

That's what I thought. My cousin is a cop in that area. He says there's no shortage of work for him in Orange Cove.

oh crap. The city website says only about 9,000 people live there. Not good.

couldn't be trouble to google the name of the town before starting a thread about it, eh? If fruit-based coves are what gets you excited, there's an even more diminutive "Lemon Cove" in the rural San Joaquin Valley too.
